This guide will show you how to use the Mage class to progress in Expert difficulty.

Intro

Welcome to my second Terraria Expert mode Progression Guide. This guide will show you how to use the Terraria Mage class to progress through the game.

I will give it a try, as I received some requests for this one.

While I don’t play Mage very often, it is a fun class with lots of weapons. Remember: There are many ways to play the game. I’m only showing you mine.

Notes

This guide was created for players who want to attempt Expert difficulty.

Mage is easier to use

We will use a Corruption World for this Guide.

It’s going to be easier for our Mage Progression.

You can choose between full defense or full damage when you reforge. It’s not possible to balance them all. It is better to focus on one thing.

I prefer to go for DMG these days, but that’s only because I’m good at dodging. You can stay alive longer if you have +4 Defense in every accessory.

Early Game (, Pre Bosses)

Getting Started

We will start by getting some wood to make the Wooden Armor, and a Wooden Sword. We can use any weapon at this stage, but I prefer to use the Wooden Sword, until I find other weapons in a box.

You should also build some houses for your NPCs.

Wooden Armor comes with a Set Bonus (+1 defense). This is very useful as Expert mode can be deadly. It’s good to have an extra defense.

Your equipment should look this way from the beginning:

Explore the surface and equip whatever you can, especially if it contains modifiers!

Basic Loadout

After your first few days of exploration, you should begin to focus on upgrading your armor or weapon. You are too weak right now. I prefer to go for the Gem Staves as well as any mineral armor, such the Iron/Lead Armor, or even the Gold/Platinum Armor. (These armors are not necessary to farm, but they are good for your defense.

We also need a Hook to increase our mobility. Any Gem Hook will suffice.

All the materials you need to mine can be found under your base.

We also need 8 additional Gems, and some Mineral Bars for a Staff

To make better armor, we will need 60 Bars and each of the Minerals.

Okay, now your equipment should look something like this:

The rest of the room should be filled with whatever other items you find.

You can now explore your world and fill your equipment with Life Crystals for health, or farm Fallen Stars to make Mana Crystals to increase your Mana.

Bosses in Pre-Hardmode

Okay, now that we have the equipment to kill some things and aren’t being destroyed by every enemy, we can prepare to kill our first boss: the Eater Of Worlds. You heard me… The EOW. We are not taking the Eye Of Cuthulu before the EOW.

First, we must get into the corruption and take it down

Keep it if you find a Band of Starpower . It will be needed later.

Bombs can be used to destroy Shadow Orbs. We can’t mine for corruption. Keep in mind, however, that the Eater of Worlds will spawn after 3 orbs. You are likely to die.

Don’t worry if you don’t find the Vilethorn after you have destroyed every Orb. To find more, just head to the corruption on the other side.

Once we have the Vilethorn, it’s a smart idea to upgrade our armor to Jungle Armor 2

Simply head to the Underground Jungle or farm:

Once you have all the necessary stuff, you can finally start the EoW battle.

Eater of Worlds

For the fight against the Eater of Worlds, ensure that your mana is close to the maximum (200 –

Minimum 200 Health

You should also purchase some Mana and Healing Potions Craft some from the Merchant

Note: I won’t be explaining every boss fight’s potions. I don’t want to make this guide too long. You can use the link to the Wiki to do your own research about potions.

Once you’re ready, craft 2 to 3 Fire Places to increase your Health Regen. If you have broken the Shadow Orbs, you can go down to the caves and place the Fires. You can summon the EoW to destroy more shadow orbs. If you have already broken all of them, you will need to use Worm Food– (. Link to the Wiki to learn how to craft it.

This Boss’s main trick is to avoid the Head which deals more damage and not seperate him in too many sections. You will defeat him quickly if you take your time. Use your Hook. if you get stuck between his bodies.

After defeating EoW, you will receive a Treasure Bag and when you open it, you get a really nice boss item: The Worm Scarf 2A18417635A, which reduces damage by 17%

You will also have some Demonite Ore , Shadow Scales . You can use the Ore to make Demonite Bars–, and combine them with Scales to upgrade the pickaxe to the Nightmare Pickaxe–.

King Slime

You can get the King Slime now by purchasing the exact same loadout. It should be simple.

We really want to wait for a Meteorite land to farm the Mineral.

Use your Pickaxe to mine the Meteorite. You will need 65 bars to make the Meteorite Armor, and 23A1845308A .

The combination of the space gun and the Meteorite armor makes an amazing combo. You don’t even need mana to use it!

This combo can also be used with the Gray Zapinator and . This weapon is extremely powerful against bosses. It is sold randomly by the Travelling Merchant. If you are fortunate enough to find one, purchase it immediately and use it instead the Space Gun

We now need to find boots for our Meteor Set!

Any of these will work because we’ll upgrade them later.

Hermes boots (found underground an Cavern Chests

Flurry Boots found in underground and cavern-snow biome chests)

Sailfish Boots – (found inside crates derived from fishing)

Eye Of Cthulhu

The boss should be easy with your new equipment. But we want to defeat them because they will drop my favorite item, the Shield of Cthulu 2 This shield not only gives you more defense but also gives you a dash! This dash will increase your mobility and survival if you are able to master it!

Pre-Hardmode Bosses 2

Queen Bee

Another easy boss. This fight should not be difficult if you use the Meteor combo.

To make it easier, you can farm the HornetsA to obtain the Bezoar–. It has a 2% drop chance so it might take some time but it will really help with poison from the Queen Bee.

Once you are ready, go to the underground Jungle and find a hive. Prepare the area to kill the Bees.

We have no interest in this fight. We are going to go for Skeletron right now.

Maximize your health and organize everything to avoid any possible damage or defense.

Skeletron

Skeletron is likely to be the most difficult boss in Pre-Hardmode.

It is important to have a mobility accessory: A double jump. There are three options. We have 3 options.

Cloud in a Bottle : Can be found in Gold Chests located in the Underground or Cavern layers.

Blizzard in a Bottle : Can be found in Frozen Chests in Ice biome

Sandstorm in a Bottle : Only found in Gold Chests within Pyramids

All three will work. However, if you can get either the Sandstorm or the Blizzard it will be much easier to dodge Skeletron attacks.

These items can also be upgraded if you find a Shiny Red Balloon or within a Skyware Chest on the Floating Islands. To scout the sky for the Islands, use a Gravitation Potion. This is optional but will increase your jump and make the Skeletron fight much easier. This) is a great option.

To upgrade the Balloon, combine it and your double jump item in Tinkerers Workshop.

Once you have your double jump, go to the Dungeon and build the arena (. There should be three rows of platforms, spaced apart enough to allow you to jump between them. You can also place campfires and heart lanterns) to fight Skeletron.

*Fill the last accessory with whatever you like! It is a good idea to choose a damage accessory.

Dungeon and Underwold

We now have access to the Dungeon.

The Magic Missile is a fun and useful weapon. It can be used in place of the Space Gun by using a Mana accessory such as the following:

Magic Cuffs – Increases maximum mana by 20, and restores mana if the wearer is injured.

Mana Flower – Reduces mana consumption by 8% and auto-consumes any mana potions in the inventory of the player when required. (I like this one, and I use it most often as a mage.)

Now you can go to the Underworld. The Obsidian Shield is a great tool to avoid fire damage and avoid being thrown into the lava. You should also bring Obsidian Skin Potions, to mine Hellstone 21,A1841742A, and upgrade your pickaxe so it is a Molten Pickaxe 21,A1841178A

You can find good Magic Weapons in this Hellforge , but they are not necessary).

We are looking for the Demon Scythe weapon.

This powerful weapon will be our choice to defeat Wall of Flesh. It might take some time to obtain it as there is a 2.8% drop from Demons. This is a powerful weapon, so be patient.

WoF and Early Hard Mode

Wall of Flesh

A platform should contain at least 1000 blocks. To avoid the lava from slimes, use Planter Boxes if it is possible. Make sure you have all your potions on hand to summon the last Pre-Hardmode Boss.

The treasure bag will be yours once you have defeated the WoF. The treasure bag will contain the Pwnhammer(to defeat the Altars of corruption) and the Demon Heart(which can be used to increase your Equipment/accessory slot by 1.) and one the four Emblems. Although we want the Sorcerer Emblem and Emblems, it’s okay if you don’t get them. You can either farm it or keep the Emblem you have to upgrade it later.

Consume the Demon Heart, and then fill your extra accessory slot by purchasing the Emblem, the Obsidian Shield or the Magic Cuffs. It’s up you.

Hard Mode

Welcome to Hard Mode!

Are you willing to die a lot?

Your armor and weapons won’t do much so you will feel helpless.

But don’t worry, I got you! We’re going to get some stuff so that you can beat your enemies!

First, you will place the Witch Doctor NPC into a Jungle Biome house. He will sell you the Leaf Wings upgrade to your double jump accessory. You won’t have fall damage to worry about.

You will need a weapon that can actually do some damage to Hard Mode enemies.

Two good, easy-to-get weapons are available to us:

The Poison Staff 2A18414420A

2.5% Drop Chance from Black Recluses () HardMode Spiders

This weapon does decent damage, especially at close range/midrange, and it is easy to obtain. You can simply go underground to find a Spider cave and lock yourself. Then, use your Vilethorn against the spiders to destroy the walls. You can also leave a small gap in your wall and use the Magic Missile.

Another option is the Crystal Serpent

This item must only be fished in the Hallow Biome. Craft a Fisher of Souls using Demonite Bars 2A18407711A to do this.

This weapon also does decent damage. It is a bit lower in damage than the Poison Staff, but it still splashes when it hits something! It also has a greater range.

You can choose which one you like best. Since I get bored fishing, I prefer the Poison Staff. Both weapons work well.

To increase your damage, you can buy the Wizard NPC or a bunch Greater Mana Potions

You can also kill a Mimic (by grabbing the 23A18417860A . They drop the Star Cloak to make Mana Cloak

Break some Altars, and continue through the Hard Mode ores until you reach Tier 3.

(You will need to make the Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil as well as the Adamantite/Titium Forge)

To make our next Armor, you will need 54 Adamantite Bars or or59 Titanium Bars or .

Any one of these 2 will work against your next boss, so choose the one you are most comfortable with.

(, remember to make the Mage Helmet.

We are almost ready for our first Hard Mode Boss!

Only one left: The Meteor Staff 2

This one is easy to make:

Mechanical Bosses

The Destroyer

It is quite simple to defeat the first Mech Boss.

Locate a flat spot or create one. Create 3 rows of platforms with a good separation between them. To give buffs, place some Heart Lanters, Star in a Bottle Lanterns and Campfires. Light up your arena. Make sure you have all the potions you need to create a Mechanical Worm that will summon the boss.

This is the equipment that you will use.

“Pro” Tip:

To inflict massive damage at the beginning of the fight, you can open the minimap and zoom in. Fly upwards for 2 seconds, and summon the boss when you are high up in the air. This will create a spawning spot for the Worm in midair. You’ll see it on the mini map. Fly to the spot and attack it. This will allow you to inflict massive damage.

The Probes can be dangerous so be aware of them throughout the fight. Fly high when you feel in danger, and use your Meteor Staff for destruction.

The Twins

After defeating the Destroyer, you now have access to the Hallowed Bars 2A18419113A. You will need 54 bars to make the Hallowed Armor 2A1841853A (farm fight the Destroyer.

This armor is my favorite in the game due to the Holy Protection buff. This allows the player dodge any enemy attacks. This Armor is likely to be sufficient to beat the rest of this game, but I will demonstrate other options. This Armor is still viable for the remainder of your playthrough.

We can also upgrade your wing upgrade.

You can kill Moths (by going to the Underground Jungle. They don’t spawn often), but there is a 50% chance of dropping Butterfly Dust. Combine the dust with 23A18414739A (dropped by Wyverns in) to make the Butterfly Wings 2A1841754A

Finally, you will want to get the Golden Shower 2 This amazing weapon inflicts the Ichor Debuff which lowers the Defense of the enemies 15!

Here’s how to get this weapon.

1 – : Create a Graveyard biome near the Dryad NPC. Place a lot of tombstones for Crimson Seeds.

2 – : Locate an underground spot that you are willing to corrupt with Crimson, and then put some dirt on it and the seeds on it.

3 – : Wait for the Crimson to corrupt the area so that you can kill Ichor Stickers. They will drop Ichor– farm 20, of it.

4 -? Farm 20 Souls of Night in underground Corruption or Crison.

5 – : Finally, buy a Spell Tome– Wizard NPC and create the Golden Shower at a Bookcase.

To take down the Twins, use the arena you have crafted previously and the following equipment:

This strategy is to focus Spazmatism green eye) first using the Meteor Staff, and then finish him off with the Crystal Serpent in the second phase. You can then take down Retinazer With the Meteor Staff and the Crystal Serpent

This is not an easy battle, I’m not going to lie. You might need to try again.

After killing the Twins, you can use 15 Souls of Sight to buy it from the Wizard NPC Shop.

This should be a simple fight when you use the Harp. You will be fine if you avoid the head spin. You shouldn’t have any trouble using your wings or your dash. You should be careful, though, because if he catches your during the head spin, you will die.

Plantera and Golem

Okay, so the first item we will craft after the Mechs is the Pickaxe Axe using one each Mech Boss Souls (Might, Sight, and Fright) and 18 Hallowed Bars.

We will then craft the Avenger Emblem 2 combining your Emblem from the Wall of Felsh with 5 Souls from each Mech.

This item is important because we will need it after Golem.

Okay, now for the important stuff. We need to upgrade our weapon in order to face Plantera.

This will require 14 Chlorophyte Bars 2 bars. Each bar is made with 5 Clorophyte Ores, so you’ll need 70 ores. You can find more! It will be used later!

Clorophyte is located at underground jungle. To maximize your health, also check for Life Fruits and .

With the 14 Clorophyte Bars, craft Venom Staff–

This is a powerful weapon that can carry you for the remainder of the game!

Plantera

This one should be simple. Simply create an underground arena in the jungle, and circle around her. You should be fine for the second phase.

This Armor comes with 2 options for your Headpiece:

The Hood: Reduces magic damage by 40% and converts them to healing force

Magic damage done by enemies heals the player who has the lowest health

The Mask: Additional enemies will be affected by magic damage

Both are recommended. When you are in danger, or near death, use the Mask and switch to the Hood.

You can upgrade your Shield of Cthulhu to get a longer dash speed and dodge attacks.

While you’re in the Dungeon Kill the Bone Le until you get a Black Belt, and aTabi.

Combine Shoe Spikes and

Climbing Claws To make the Tiger Climbing Gear–, combine this item with the Black Belt or the Tabi to make Master Ninja Gear–

Some prefer to stick with Shield of Cthulhu. But I like MNG.

Duke Fishron, Lunar Events

This one is going to be difficult and it will take some practice, especially in his third phase when he is not visible. If you can get his items, you’ll be ready to face your final bosses!

We want the Fishron Wings (10% chance) to avoid one of the Moon Lord attacks.

Once you have your new wings, and your new weapon, you can move on to the next boss.

Lunatic Cultist

You can build a simple arena with just a row of platforms, campfires, and heart lanterns. Then, you can buff up with potions to kill the Cultist. With your new gear, it shouldn’t be an issue.

The Cultist will drop the Ancient Manipulator– crafting station that we need in order to make our last weapon.

To make this weapon, we must first destroy the Nebula Pilar.

Lunar Events

Use the same gear as Duke Fishron to take down the Nebula Pilar to obtain the Nebula Fragments and . These can be used in the Ancient Manipulator for the Nebula Blaze and , which will be our weapon to kill The Moon Lord.

Now, take down 2 more Pilars, but don’t kill them all.

First, you must make the Arena for Final Boss.

Purchase a Blend O Matic from the Steampunker NPC. Use the machine to craft Asphalt combining Stone with Gel

You can make a long platform of asphalt in the air. The longer the better… at minimum 750 blocks (. I usually go for 1500 to 2000 blocks). Make sure you prepare your Potions. The following are my recommendations:

Regeneration, Swiftness, Ironskin, Lifeforce, Mana regeneration, Mana Power, Rage / Wrath.

Once you are ready, take out the last Pilar and get ready to fight!

Final Boss

Moonlord

You have 1 minute to kill the last Pilar before the MoonLord spawns. This time can be used to combine 1 of each Lunar Fragment

You should run on the asphalt platform sideways to avoid being attacked.

Pay attention to the Death Ray… If you spot this attack, fly above his head and change your direction.

Don’t panic if you fail the first time. Just kill the Cultist and go back to the Lunar Events.

The Last Prism has one of the highest DPS in the game

The Lunar Flare is a fun weapon that can be used to defeat waves of enemies.
