This is a short guide that explains how to make and upload steam vr backgrounds to the workshop.
Required software
This is the software you will need in order to make backgrounds.
Steam
Steam VR
image editing software such as Photoshop or Gimp. (up to personal preference)
How to make your own images
First you are going to want a template image. you can find them in (yoursteamfolder)\steamapps\common\SteamVR\resources\backgrounds
I suggest using the first two aurorasky.png and aurorasky_thumbnail.png but you can use whichever you prefer. what really matters is the size.
Now open those in a image editing software (im using photoshop)
now you can make a new layer and hide the original. once you do that either insert your own images or make one from scratch.
Once you do this for both the main image and thumbnail then you can export it to wherever you would like. make sure to name theme something different than the template.
(note: there will be a seem if the left and right side do not blend well. also both the top and bottom of the image will be stretched. if you want good design tips there are other guides for that)
How to upload
This section will focus on how to upload to steam workshop
first open steam vr. you do not need to be in vr just have it open.
it should look something like this :
click the three lines in the top left of the window.
then click “workshop” and then “upload new background”
a new window should appear that looks like this :
Now add the files and add a description and set the visibility. it should look something like this
Now you just hit submit. you should be redirected to the workshop page of your new background. all thats left is to hit subscribe so you can test it out.
