Victoria 3 – How to Add New Technology Mod – This manual is a manual guide for Victoria’s new and modified technologies. This manual makes the supposition that you are already familiar with creating mod folders and uploading them to Steam. A Vic 3 mod can easily be modified to include new technology. Only five steps are required. I won’t go into detail because there are numerous guides on this subject.

 

Step 1: Create a common folder

Create a folder called EXACTLY (in the folder you are working on. This name is what the game uses to find your files) “common”. As shown in the image.

Step 2: Create a Technology Folder

Make a new folder in the same folder as the picture.

Step 3: Era and Technologies folders

We are getting close to something exciting now! Make two folders within the technology folder with the exact same names as the ones in the picture. The drill is now complete.

Step 4: Eras

You will need to create a file called “my_eras.txt” within the eras folder. eg: “my_eras.txt”

You can open “my_eras.txt”, and type something similar to what I’ve shown you. These technologies are divided into eras, each with a specific start year. You can choose an era that begins in 430 AD. no problem! Do you want an era that began in 1975 AD? You can do it. Before coding any techs, you will need to define your eras. The game will adjust the in-game age numbers to any sequence you require.

This step can be ignored if you stick to the vanilla timeline. However, you should add the correct era for any technologies you add.

Step 5: TECHNOLOGIES FINALLY!

If you are adding new techs

Make a new.txt files in the technologies folder with any name. eg: “my_techs.txt”

Modifying existing techs is possible:

Go to C:\Program Files (x86 – \Steam\steamapps\common\Victoria 3\game\common\technology\technologies

Copy the text files and paste them into your mod folder.

If you are adding new technology or modifying existing ones:

Make a new.txt files in the technologies folder with any name. eg: “my_techs.txt”

Go to C:\Program Files (x86 – \Steam\steamapps\common\Victoria 3\game\common\technology\technologies

Copy/paste the code only for the TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU WANT to CHANGE into your new tech file “my_techs.txt”. There should be both new and old techs. This ensures compatibility since you don’t have to change the entire file. This makes it easier to make changes because they are all in one place.

After you have followed the steps to find the correct file, you can change your techs. Look at the vanilla files in C:\Program Files (x86 – \Steam\steamapps\common\Victoria 3\game\common\technology\technologies to get a feel for how existing tech works. In my example, I created a technology called “peasant levies,” available in 1400. To unlock “trade muskets,” you need “peasant levies.” This is the only syntax that distinguishes technologies.

The cost of the technology will depend on the era you select. Technology can be made more expensive by raising the price of the era as a whole. To my knowledge, it is impossible to alter the price of any technology. You will automatically be provided with the tech tree. It can be created without using a GUI. You only need to specify the requirements, and you’re done.

You must create icons for your tech and choose the correct modifiers. However, you can probably figure this out on your own.
