Basics of friendship and gifts you should and shouldn’t give to the villagers of Stardew Valley

Friendship
- You can become friends with Pelican Town’s villagers. As your friendships deepen, the villagers’ dialogue lines become more friendly, cut-scenes occur, and the villagers send you gifts in the mail.
- Each villager has a friendship score represented by a ten-heart meter (for a normal villager) or twelve-heart meter (for your spouse)
- Each heart is 250 friendship points
Friendship Points
- Increasing:
- Talking to villagers (+10 if the villager is in special animation, otherwise +20) Once per day
- Completing an item delivery quest (+150)
- Giving them a gift (See below)
- Making certain choices in their heart events
- Decreasing:
- Not talking to a villager (-2 per day, -20 per day if married)
- Giving them a gift they dislike or hate
- Hitting them with a slingshot (-30) once per day
- Searching through garbage when they’re within 7 tiles of you (-25, except Linus)
Each day, not talking to a villager will slightly decrease their friendship, unless their heart meter is full.

- Love: +400 points
- Like: +225 points

- Love: +640 points

- If a gift is liked or loved, the points gained will be affected by quality of the item

Romance
- Some villagers can be romanced by the player
- Once you’ve reached eight hearts with an eligible villager, you can give them a bouquet to unlock the ninth and tenth hearts
- Once you’ve reached ten hearts with an eligible villager, you can give them a Mermaid’s Pendant to propose
- In singleplayer mode, Marriage is possible only with a villager who is marked as “single” in the Social tab
- To propose marriage to another player in multiplayer, the ring must be given to the player, who has the option to accept or refuse it
- If accepted, the two players become engaged.
Marriage
- Once a villager has been married, they will move into the farmhouse
- Keeping your spouse happy will result in them helping around the farm
- A happy spouse might make breakfast, feed animals, repair fences or water crops
- They occasionally change the wallpaper or flooring of the Farmhouse
- Interacting with your spouse when no dialogue is available will result in an embrace
- It is also possible to have children under certain circumstances
- The gifting limit of twice a week is removed, replaced by once a day limit
- Once married, the player’s spouse will immediately set up a unique room inside the farmhouse
- In addition to their room inside the house, each spouse has a unique area behind the farmhouse
- At 13/12 Hearts, there is a random chance to obtain a Stardrop from your spouse
- In multiplayer, where two players marry each other, the Stardrop appears as a present in a small purple box next to each one’s bed
Spouse Chores
- Watering all crops on the farm
- Feeding all animals
- Watering the dog bowl, or the cat bowl
- Repairing broken fences
- Giving gifts, including breakfast and dinner dishes
(If inventory is full, the item will not be received)
Children
- You can have children only if you have upgraded the Farmhouse for the second time
- After you go to bed for the night, your spouse might randomly ask if you want to have a child
- You can answer “yes” or “not now.” Same-gender couples will adopt children
- Opposite-gender couples will have biological children
- Children from marriage can also be ‘turned into doves’ at the Witch’s Hut in exchange for a Prismatic Shard after divorcing your spouse
- If the player is expecting a child and gets a divorce, the child will not be born or delivered
Divorce
- You can visit the Mayor’s Manor where a book inside will give you an option to divorce
- A divorce costs 50,000 gold
- After filing for divorce, players have the option to cancel before the end of the day
- If not canceled, spouse, spouse’s room, and unique outside area will be gone the next morning
- Under their name it will state “ex”
- After the divorce, the spouse will move back to their old residence
- Your ex spouse will have negative interactions with the player, citing the failure of their marriage
- They will also not accept any gifts from the player
- Any children from the marriage will stay at the farmhouse
- Any furniture or flooring placed in the spouse’s room will be “dropped” the day after the divorce
- You can visit the Witch’s Hut, where they’ll find a shrine which can erase all ex-spouses’ memories
- Erasing all ex-spouses’ memories will cost 30,000 gold
- Afterward, all ex-spouses will have no memory of the previous marriage
- Divorced spouses neither attend your wedding nor treat you normally during Festivals
Gifts
- You can give each villager one gift per day, up to two gifts per week, as indicated by the checkboxes in the social tab
- You can review someone’s gift preferences by clicking on their “Gift Log” row in the Social Tab
- This log keeps track of gifts given, and gift preferences learned
- You can learn gift preferences in dialogues or secret notes as well
