Core concepts

Space Engineers - Falcon Defence Industries - Ship Classification - Core concepts
This section will underline the 3 core concepts which determines the final ship classification.

Armour & Range

This first core concept is to class the vessel by it’s armour rating and the range capabilities available to its controllers.

Command & Control

This second core concept is to class the vessel by how it is controlled and the amount of manpower required to adequately command the vessel.

Purpose & Role

This third core concept is to class the vessel by what it’s general purpose is; within normal mission parameters and operations. Furthermore within this concept, is a look into how the vessel fits within a larger fleet composition or operation.

Vessel name composition
These 3 core concepts combined will form the base serial code at the start of each vessel’s Codename, followed by a hyphon and lastly followed by Alias model name / nickname.

Armour & Range

Space Engineers - Falcon Defence Industries - Ship Classification - Armour & Range

The classes shown below indicate it’s grouping dependent on its defence Armour rating & the range capabilities available to the vessel.

Class 1

Vessel has Light, Mixed, or minimal armour plating throughout.

Class 2

Vessel has Heavy armour plating throughout.

Class 3

Vessel has Light, Mixed, or minimal armour plating throughout & Jump Drive capability.

Class 4

Vessel has Heavy armour plating throughout & Jump Drive capability.

Note
Due to design restrictions on F.D.I, we are unable to produce Small crew vessel Jump drives at this time and thus due to this limitation it will evidently mean that no small screw vessel will ever be classed as a Class 3 or 4.

Furthermore each Class grouping will be followed by a sub-class indicating the propulsion system and its short range travel capabilities. The prefix will be encapsulated in parenthesis. See below:

(A)

The vessel or vehicle has atmospheric thrusters available.

(V)

The vessel or vehicle has ion thrusters available.

(H)

The vessel or vehicle has hydrogen thrusters available.

Note
The prefixes may be combined to indicate that a vessel has more than one method of propulsion available.

Examples below;

Class 4(H)

Vessel has Heavy armour plating throughout & Jump Drive capability.
The vessel or vehicle has hydrogen thrusters available.

Class 1(AH)

Vessel has Light, Mixed, or minimal armour plating throughout.
The vessel or vehicle has atmospheric thrusters available.
The vessel or vehicle has hydrogen thrusters available.

Command & Control

Space Engineers - Falcon Defence Industries - Ship Classification - Command & Control

Vessels below are marked as flight capable vehicles.

Drone
This category determines that the vessel is remotely controlled by one or more crew and can only be controlled in this method. A vessel which can be commandeered remotely but contains a cockpit for at least one man crew cannot fit within this category as many vessels trend towards having remote control units these days.
Vessels within this category attain a Prefix of

D

Small crew
This category determines that the vessel bares small resources to command and therefore requires less manned control by a crew. Vessels in this category trend to have less than 6 crew members depending on the size.
Vessels within this category attain a Prefix of

S

Large crew
This category determines that the vessel bares a large amount resources to command and therefore requires a larger manned control by a crew. Vessels in this category trend to have 2 or more crew members depending on the size.
Vessels within this category attain a Prefix of

L

Vessels below are marked as Land restricted vehicles and will have the (R)over assigned prefix.

Note
Due to most land-based vehicles being restricted in its abilities many of the groupings on the third core concept will not be applicable and the most appropriate grouping will be selected by FDI at our discretion where possible and most relevant to its purpose & role.

Purpose & Role

Space Engineers - Falcon Defence Industries - Ship Classification - Purpose & Role

Vessels below are categorised on previous section as SMALL CREW

S-Shuttle

Shuttles are mostly purposed for minimal transport of crew & cargo.

S-Recon

Reconnaissance vessels are equipped for long term survival & self sustainability in order to survey or travel extreme distances.

S-Freight

Freighters are equipped mostly for long haul journeys with basic survival units and large cargo capacities.

S-Aux

Auxiliary vessels include any other vessel with utilities for construction, demolition, repair, mining, refining, assembly, power or medical support. They carry no weapon systems, as they would then be classed as a Gunship, see below.

S-Gunship

These are similar in most respects to Auxiliary vessels except they carry weapon systems. Gunships are versatile vessels that can provide support in various ways to the fleet as a whole or to an operation. These are average in speed & firepower but provide some specific utility such as being a troop transport or carrier.

S-Fighter

Fighters are the general purpose small attack craft to assault light enemy craft of the same size as itself or smaller. Agile, fast and average firepower.

S-Bomber

Bombers are the general purpose small attack craft to assault heavier enemy craft that are much larger than itself. Slower moving, less agile but carry an assortment of weapon systems and a heavy hitting payload weapon system.

S-Corvette

A slower moving attack craft meant to attack smaller craft than itself. These are usually much larger craft and less agile but with a vast array of turrets to cover many arcs of fire.

S-Destroyer

The largest of all the S-Class vessels. These are similar to bombers in all respects but with a strong capability for high speed and agility.

Vessels below are categorised on previous section as LARGE CREW

L-Shuttle

Shuttles are mostly purposed for minimal transport of crew & cargo.

L-Recon

Reconnaissance vessels are equipped for long term survival & self sustainability in order to survey or travel extreme distances.

L-Freight

Freighters are equipped mostly for long haul journeys with basic survival units and large cargo capacities.

L-Aux

Auxiliary vessels include any other vessel with utilities for construction, demolition, repair, mining, refining, assembly, power or medical support. They carry no weapon systems, as they would then be classed as a Gunship, see below.

L-Destroyer

These are similar to bombers in most respects but with a strong capability for high speed and agility.

L-Frigate

Capital ship
Versatile cessels similar to gunships in most respects but do not have minimal firepower, most carry an assortment of various weapon systems, dependent on their size.

L-Dreadnought

Capital ship
A vessel with the solitary purpose of bringing the largest assortment of weapon systems with various capabilities and ranges. No other utilities are present on-board as most of the ship space is for ammo storage, basic components and weapon systems. Its sole utility may be a small medical station aboard.

L-Carrier

Capital ship
Large vessels with average firepower, large cargo storage and equally massive construction & repair capabilities. These behemoths contain an array of hangers for smaller attack craft such as fighters and bombers. Their defence, is, their attack.

L-Cruiser

Capital ship
The largest and most versatile of vessels has the Cruiser title reserved. Capable of packing large amounts of firepower, an array of different utilities make them capable of any role on a much larger scale. These can provide support, utility, artillery, bombardment, troop transports and planetary invasion bases of operation.

L-Flagship

Similar to L-Cruisers above, a flagship vessel is the “Ship-of-the-line” the best of its class and dwarfs everything else by comparison in its, size, power, utility and capabilities. Only the most well financed fleets contain at most one and with good reason too, the cost is equally just as massive. The idea behind the category is that this ship should be a combination of all the capital ships capabilities.
