What is Second Extinction?
Helldivers meets Left 4 Dead in this pseudo open world FPS built with Avalanche’s Apex Engine. Second Extinction is a mission-based horde mode shooter in a post-futuristic Earth reclaimed by mutant dinosaurs. Choose from one of the 4 currently available members of team Extinction and play alone or in a squad of up to three players. Explore the map, complete events and main objectives, kill hundreds of dinosaurs and extract with the goodies you obtained.
There is no friendly fire, for you
It’s important to know what to expect from the hectic action that ensues when attacked by a horde of dinosaurs. Neither your guns nor the equipment or abilities will damage anyone from your team. You can safely unleash hell, but just be mindful of the explosive barrels scattered across the map. The dinosaurs however do not benefit from this luxury. They can easily kill each other while desperately trying to kill you.
Don’t underestimate the power of melee attacks
While you do get access to a decent variety of upgradeable guns, you still have the option to slam enemies in the face. Don’t hesitate to use melee attacks, they are incredibly strong and they can stagger and knock down with ease most raptors. In fact, the annoying Diggers can be killed in just a few melee hits without having to worry about their armor plates.
Supply drops damage enemies on landing but not you
The supply drops are the lifeline of any mission, providing great sustainability. However, they have an extra utility that could come in handy when overwhelmed by enemies. As they drop from the orbit, the supply pods’ crash landing triggers a blast wave which can damage and knock away enemies in the area. Use this wisely and make sure you are not in the zone because while you don’t take damage, you will get knocked down.
Enemies don’t regenerate health
This information will mostly come in handy when fighting a T-Rex. Don’t be afraid to disengage, the enemies do not regenerate their health.
Don’t push the limits of gravity
In Second Extinction you can land safely in a superhero fashion while jumping from various heights that should otherwise kill you. However, this doesn’t mean gravity has forgotten to take her toll, she’s just more lenient than usual. Jumping from extreme heights will still knock you out.
Reviving and respawning
Taking too much damage knocks you out of combat. While downed, you can self-revive if you are not interrupted by enemies or get revived by teammates. But if worse comes to worst, dying doesn’t end the mission. You can respawn after 25 seconds to the landing area or any camp sight that was captured by your team.
Progression system
Killing dinosaurs and completing objectives will net you research points. These are the equivalent of experience and will level up your profile to unlock new weapons and gadgets. Research points are also used alongside the materials collected from killing dinosaurs and completing contracts to upgrade the weapons. Each weapon has a set of stats and perks which influence their performance. The stats can be increased by unlocking specific slots and then buying the necessary tokens to fill them up. The perks are tied to the stat slots and are unlocked in the same fashion. You can only buy up to 10 tokens for each weapon, limiting the number of stats and perks you can have. However, you can always rearrange them to try new setups.
It’s Early Access
This is just a reminder about the current state of the game. While Second Extinction features a solid foundation to build upon, this is by no means a complete and polished game. There are plenty of bugs and just not enough content to keep one entertained for long. A roadmap for the immediate content to come has already been published, so stay tuned for more!
Ending note
As per usual, I will try to keep this guide up to date as the game expands throughout Early Access. In the meantime, give them hell because there’s no meteorite this time!
