Phasmophobia – Phasmo 101

What is Phasmophobia?

Phasmophobia is an indie horror game developed and published by Kinetic Games (DKnighter). This game as of January 2021 is still available in early access through steam along with VR support. The game has received a great reputation by the community due to popular Twitch streamers and Youtubers playing it. This game has been nominated as the best VR GAME OF THE YEAR for the steam awards 2020. To play this game you take control of one Ghost hunter from a group up to 4 players. You play as Ghost hunters exploring haunted places and identifying ghosts using evidence that you will find throughout the game. Players are able to communicate via Voice chat and talk to the ghost using the Voice chat feature which makes this game stand out the most. 
 
 
 

An Introduction to Ghosts and What to Look Out for!

Spirit

A Spirit is the most common ghost that you can encounter so far. 
It has no unique strengths and is weak to Smudge sticks. Smudging the Ghost room will help the Spirit to calm down for a long period of time 
 

Wraith

A Wraith is the only Ghost that has the ability to fly 
meaning that you can’t track it via footsteps and etc, however a wraith’s weakness is that it is immune to salt. 
 

Phantom

A Phantom is a Ghost that you do not want to maintain eye contact with, 
Maintaining eye contact with a phantom will cause your sanity to drop by a considerable amount. 
However it isn’t a narcissist therefore is weak to photos, taking a photo of a phantom will cause it to disappear temporarily 
 

Poltergeist

A Poltergeist, as you have probably seen before in popular horror movies is the type of Ghost that’s able to manipulate objects around it and has been known to be quite noisy. 
Identifying a poltergeist is quite easy as it’s notorious for throwing a huge amount of objects at once. 
However due to that the poltergeist is completely weak in an empty room 
 

Banshee

A Banshee is what I would call as an aggressive ghost, it will attack anything and has been known to be quite active. 
A banshee has been known to lock on one of it’s victims at a time meaning that it will only stalk one member at a time until that particular member has been killed by the Banshee. However the banshee fears the crucifix and will be less Aggressive when near one 
 

Jinn

A Jinn has similar behaviors as a spider, meaning that they are very territorial and will attack when threatened. 
An important thing to note is that Jinns are able to travel at significant speeds making it potentially a deadly ghost. However turning off the ghost rooms power source will prevent the Jinn from using any of it’s abilities. 
 

Mare

A Mare, is a powerful ghost powered by the dark. 
Just like your local thug members it has an increased chance to attack a team member in the dark. However by turning the lights on around a Mare will lower it’s chance to attack. 
 

Revenant

A Revenant is by far one of the worst Ghosts that anyone can ever encounter. 
Straight out of Satans Nightmares this bad boy can kill you in an instant. A Revenant is very fast when hunting a victim However by hiding from the Revenant you will cause it to slow down significantly 
 

Shade

A Shade is by far the most introverted ghost that you can ever encounter, 
Just like how you act around your crush a Shade will be very inactive when there’s multiple people around therefore causing the shade to be one of the hardest Ghosts to find. However a shade will not enter hunt mode if there are multiple people around. 
 

Demon

A Demon is by far the most Aggressive ghost that you can encounter. 
Just like your ex a Demon will attack someone without a reason and has been known to attack more often than any other Ghosts. However, using the ouija board against a demon will not lower the users sanity if the questions are successful. 
 

Yurei

A Yurei popular in Japanese myths is a ghost that has came back to this world for revenge. 
This ghost will drain out your sanity faster than lightning mcqueen finishing his race in cars 3. However the Yurei is weak to Smudge sticks. 
 

Oni

To describe what an oni is, an Oni is basically a weaker version of the Demon. 
Onis are more active when people are nearby however cause they’re very active this will make them by far the most easiest ghost to identify

Spirit

Starter Items

These are items that you should own by default 
 
EMF Reader 
EMF Readers are used to read the rooms "Electromagnetic Fields", if the EMF Reader reads the rooms emf as 5 that counts as evidence. 
 
Flashlight 
Flashlights are used to illuminate dark spots in the room 
 
Photo Camera 
The Photo Camera is used to take pictures of Evidence, and The Ghost itself. 
 
Video Camera 
The Video Camera, different to the photo camera is used to gather evidence such as Ghost orbs and etc 
 
UV Light 
The UV Light is used to find Fingerprints. 
 
Spirit Box 
Spirit box is used to talk to the Ghosts itself by asking it questions, more on this later! 
 
Ghost Writing Book 
The Ghost Writing Book as the name suggests is where the Ghost will write things on, Simply place it down anywhere and if you find writings on it that counts as evidence.

Professional Items

These are items that you do not own by default 
 
Strong Flashlight 
The Strong Flashlight as the name suggests is a stronger version of the flashlight. 
 
Lighter 
The lighter is used to Light candles and Smudge sticks. 
 
Candle 
The candle is another source of illumination, the candle helps you maintain your sanity. 
 
Crucifix 
The Crucifix is an item that you can place in the Ghost room to prevent hunts. The crucifix is also used for optional objectives so it’s always handy to have one around 
 
Salt 
Salt is another objective item, you can track footsteps with it. 
 
Smudge Sticks 
The smudge stick is a life saver when you’re stuck in hunts. Dropping a smudge stick will delay the hunt by a couple of seconds. This is also another optional objective item 
 
Tripods 
Used to Hold the video camera in rooms where it’s quite plain such as the gym in the high school map 
 
Sound Sensors 
Sound sensors are used to detect sound, you can view the sounds in the top right panel inside of the van. 
 
Sanity Pills 
The Sanity pills as the name suggests, will replenish your sanity. 
 
Thermometer 
The thermometer is arguably one of the most useful items in Phasmophobia, it is used to detect room temperatures and could be a massive giveaway to where the ghost room might be. If the room temp is below 10 degrees Celsius then you have located the ghost room 
 
Infrared Light Sensor 
The infrared light sensor is a cheaper version of the motion sensor. This does not send feedback to your truck but it will emit a bright light around it. 
 
Parabolic Microphone 
The parabolic Microphone is used to measure a certain place’s decibel or to find footsteps, as of right now it isn’t as useful. 
 
Glowstick 
To put it simply, the glowstick is basically just a uv light that illuminates the place around it with a purple light. Useful for tracking footsteps! 
 
Headmounted Camera 
Headmounted cameras are basically video cameras on another hunters head to see the POV of what another hunter is seeing.

Important Notes!

Ghosts Names

You can easily aggrivate the Ghost by yelling out the Ghosts name that you can easily identify via looking at the whiteboard in the van parallel to the monitor inside of the van. 
 
 

How to Locate the Breaker Room

Locating the breaker room is simple, all you need to do is to look at the top left panel inside of your van and the breaker should be the glowing green box as shown below. 
 
 

How to Identify and Survive a Hunt!

A hunt will occur throughout your game. Flashing lights will normally identify that a hunt is occuring, to survive a hunt is easy 
 
1. Don’t Panic 
2. Get inside a room and close the door 
3. Stay quiet as the ghost will pick up your noise if you talk through voice chat. 
 

How to identify Ghost orbs

As shown in the picture below this is how a Ghost orb should look like (Located dead center infront of the cardboard box)
