(What? I wouldn’t do it… Never… Read below.
This is a quick and easy way to get the 4.0 inventory updated and your Freighter ships back in working order.

This guide is not very helpful. I don’t have the time or can’t be bothered to make it look pretty. But take what you can get.

What is completely gone?

You’re not getting anything back by having two separate stacks of one technology. You can split it into three in general and three in technology. It doesn’t matter if it was exploited or not. It’s gone.

Tech Stats and How tech products work now

You don’t have to re-roll stats on uninstalled tech!!

Your slots have been moved from general to cargo. It’s now inactive. You will need more technology slots to get it back up and running.

You can now pack the tech and move it around like other items.

When you hover over an existing piece of Tech, the context menu will show an option to “pack tech” – this is a normal item in your inventory, just like a commodity. It has the same stats, but it’s not contributing any; it’s not actively.

(Hold EX (by default, however); note that certain technologies, essentially the ones you can’t disassemble like Jetpack and Life Support, can’t be packed up. MageKing17 provided clarification.

You can then install the tech again just as you did before, but it doesn’t re-roll, and it has the same stats.

You can swap out technology based on your current biome until you have built up your tech inventories.

The reasonable way out – Or – How can I get back what you have?

You can find new difficulty settings in settings. This works great on Freighters and Ships. Go to Options -> Difficulty Settings -> Crafting and Items settings. You can make things easier until you get your stuff fixed up.

For example, you can eliminate all costs by going to the ship upgrade station and purchasing inventory slots for free. The Freighter can also be upgraded for free. Simply add your techs back in, and you’re done.

The current stable version has a bug. See troubleshooting point 2. – Thank you, Tahu-Umbra!

Exosuit – The good and the ugly

Exosuit is the worst because you can’t upgrade your tech inventory in one location. It’s easiest to turn off fuel, purchase costs, and do station hopping to discover new systems. This will allow you to add one station slot until you’re full. You can also turn off hazards and costs, buy multiples of the “suit upgrade charts” at the cartographer, and fly around the planet. It should be faster than the previous version, where you had to use a signal booster. Now it just gives coordinates. In no time, you should have an excellent tech inventory. Remember that all your techs are still available, have the same stats, and you’re not rerolling. You can’t use 3+3 anymore.

After you have fixed most of your stuff

If you want), make sure you switch the difficulty back up to default (.

I recommend you only use the difficulty settings to fix any issues and then return to the original. This will give you back your senses of achievement and progress without compromising the rest of the experience.

Troubleshooting

Although I don’t have much concrete information, I do know this:

1. Size of inventory

All inventories of tech should have a maximum. A maximum value of 60 slots. If your worth can’t rise to sixty, it is a bug. You can either try some of the fixes already delivered to the experimental branch or pause and wait.

Some people can grow beyond the 60 limits. I wouldn’t recommend it; a later patch could break it.

2. Ship Augmentation

People seem to lose augmentation resources when trying to increase the number of slots. You can fix this by upgrading to the difficulty settings for free once the patch is available.

Here is a detailed bug description and workaround, courtesy Tahu-Umbra. Many thanks!

Update 4.0 states that you can’t currently get more than 30 technology slots to the 60 maximum unless you max out your 120 cargo. Click below the last row of cargo to add slots. A new row will be created or filled and the slot-adding screen will be opened and closed.

When the cargo slots are full it will open the menu to add additional slots.

3. For missing items, reset Freighter rooms

Some people report completely missing items. It seems like you can restore a save to bring back stuff. If you have too many items in your cargo, move them to another cargo hold and load them again. (Thanks, Dunston Phoenix) Do not panic; there are new icons.

4. Browsing Freighter sub-inventories, Cargo spaces

These might have a bug. You may need to use some resources if your mouse cursor picks them up.)

What else can I do if I don’t want to fix everything?

There are two options if you don’t want the stuff to be fixed.

1. Don’t play. It’s your decision, and it’s understandable (.) I likely had the same emotional reaction as you when I discovered what the patch did to my stuff.

2. You can use the difficulty settings to make missing equipment non-problematic. Reduce hazards, lower prices, increase resources, etc. This will, I believe, be enough for some people to fix the problem.
