Welcome to this post This Half-Life – How to Turn Off Auto-Run and Enable Sprinting Commands Guide was written to be of use to you, and we genuinely hope that it is.

For a couple of days, I tried to find information that would show me how to disable auto-running in Half-Life so that I could sprint using the shift key, like in Half-Life 2, but all solutions were either useless or overly complicated, so I decided to figure it out myself, and here’s a simple and easy way to disable auto-running and sprinting while holding shift.

How does Half-Life walk?

The procedure is straightforward. In the original Half-Life, you can travel at full speed by holding the shift key.

Commands that include the “+” at the end of their function differently than other commands. If you put it to any key on a keyboard, mouse, or keyboard, it will execute when you press the key. However, when you release the key, a comparable command with “+” in front (e.g. “speed” for “+speed command) will be executed, and the command won’t be “active”.

This is how you move your guns or shoot your guns. You shoot or move only if you hold the appropriate buttons. Since the command for movement is “+forward” the shooting command is “+attack”, Similar to this, “+speed” is a command for walking at a slower pace, and it is bound to the shift key by default.

Sprinting: The solution

So, how do disable auto-running and bind shift to increase speed instead of reducing it? Here’s my suggestion To remove commands that contain “+”, as their first symbol, you can do this by pressing the key, execute their “-” variant. This will disable the “+speed” command which makes us walk slower. Another command will contain “+”, and will execute the “-speed” command.

Here is the script I created:

Affiliation “+holdrun” “-speed”

Alias “+speed” and “-holdrun”

Bind SHIFT +holdrun

To make the script work, open your Developer Console (the default setting is “”) and copy and paste the following three commands into the text input box. That’s all there is to it. Following a short shift, If everything is in order, you can start walking gently without holding anything. If you hold shift, Half-Life’s default run pace will be used. Simple and without complications.

You can also make a .cfg file in the Half-Life content directory (steam/steam apps/common/HalfLife/valve) with this script in it, and then bind a command “exec [your .cfg file name].cfg” (witout brackets) to an unused key on the keyboard, if you don’t want to insert the script lines every time you enter the game.
