Gameplay basics for new players.

Purpose of this guide

This guide was made for new players who has a minimal knowledge of the game and want to learn some mechanics that aren’t decently explained in the game. I’ve been playing Siege since 2017 and even though i don’t play competitive I know all the mechanics and rules. Hopefully this will help someone understanding the game properly.

Playlists and Menu

Playlists in Rainbow Six Siege

Siege has a few different playlists which have unique rules or requirements. They’re simple to remember and here the best one for new players.

Game modes: There are currently 3 game modes.
Bomb: Typical defuse game mode, the attacking team has a defuser and the defending team has to protect their bombs.
Secure Area: This one has a “Biohazard container” which has to be secured only by staying in its room. We can define 3 states for the objective.
Idle: Nothing is happening to the objective.
Contested: Both attacking and defending teams are in the room. This means that until only one team will be in the room nothing much will happen. Clear the objective by killing opponents.
Securing: The attacking team is securing the container which means there are no defenders in the room.
Hostage: Simple, save the hostage.

Newcomer: This is the most recent one, it was added back in 2019. It features 3 of the 20 maps in the game. Here you will find two type of players: the smurf or people who never touched the game. It’s only playable until level 50 is reached. After that you won’t be able to play it.

Quick Match/Casual: This is a normal best of 3 casual game mode. This has no limitation, it can be played by everyone anytime. This is the best place where you can learn the basics of the game without encountering annoying people (maybe…). Don’t worry, this playlist has no competitive mechanics at all so feel free to test out operator (in-game classes) or just training your skills.Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege - How to Siege

Ranked/Unranked: The only difference between these is the MMR system which define someone’s rank. I suggest unranked to people who want to go competitive without being too familiar with the game. They both features mechanics such as Class Ban and Map Ban which are present in the pro scene as well.

Operator/Loadout

Operators: There are currently 58 classes, 29 attacker and 29 defenders. Each one has a unique ability. While I cannot go in-depth for every Operator there are secondary gadgets available to the classes.

Loadout: The loadout is the gear you’re taking in the round. It’s composed by a primary gun, a secondary gun, a secondary gadget and a primary gadget which is available only to the operator you’re choosing.

Attackers: The goal for the attackers is to get into the objective and defuse/secure/save it. Newbies should start by playing with the class “Ash”. The reason i suggest it to the new players is because her weapons/gadgets are easy to learn/use.
“Is Ash op? No, she’s viable for the nature of the game” Pengu, Siege’s Ex competitive player.

Defenders: They just wait for the attackers. One of Siege biggest problem is the difference in the win-rate of defenders, they usually have the advantage. Same as Ash, the best class for beginners is “Jager”. Be careful though, don’t use only these two operators, your main goal is to learn every class ability and master it.

Gameplay basic and mechanics

Recoil/Weapon proprieties: Rainbow Six Siege has over 100 weapons with different recoil pattern which are really hard to learn at first. The only way to control it is to play a lot with a single weapon, over the vertical recoil there’s an horizontal one.

Weapon Classes: Each weapon class has a usual recoil pattern. Here’s a list and how they perform in-game.

  • Assault Rifles (AR): high damage, high recoil
  • Submachine Guns (SMG): low damage, high RPM
  • Shotguns: high damage at close range
  • Marksman Rifle (DMR): high damage, semi-automatic
  • Light Machine Guns (LMG): big mag, high recoil
  • Handguns: pistols used for empty mags, never available as primary

Attachments: Each weapon can attach sights, barrels, grips and laser sight.

  • Sights: there are 7 sights and 3 of them are available almost everywhere. Sights are a controversial topic on Siege, while in the past Ubisoft added zoomed sight to defenders nowadays the developers try not to give more than a zoom of 1.5x to a defender (sight history in the next section). The one that are available on a lot of weapons provide no zoom but they’re better than an iron sight. I suggest to use a 1.5x when possible, it’s clean and the zoom is not too much.
  • Barrels:
Muzzle Brake: less vertical recoil, recenter crosshair faster.
Flash Hider: clearer view of target, little recoil advantage on first 5 shots.
Compensator: recoil advantage after initial kick.
  • Grips:
    Vertical Grip: less vertical recoil.
Angled Grip: faster ADS (aim down sight) time.
  • Laser Sight: you can choose to equip a laser sight to your weapon but i don’t suggest it at all, the only advantage you get is an hip-fire increased accuracy. The down sight is that the enemy will see it and you’ll end up giving away your position. Hip-firing in Siege is not viable so don’t equip it.

Game’s history and current problems

Controversial topics:

  • Sights (solved):
Sights always has been a big problem for Siege, from Ubi decision to the community usage, everything was wrong. This was solved only in 2020 when developers finally decided to rework them completely. Back in 2017 a 3.0x sight was attached to some 1-speed defenders. This made the game unplayable. Getting spawn-killed or dying from braindead bullet holes was horrible for the most part of the community, at first Ubisoft decided to remove the sight only from a few ops but it was not enough since everyone was still complaining. The real problem arrived when they’ve decided to take out ACOG from Jager and few others: the community was then divided in two parts. One wanted the sight back and the other wanted it to be completely removed. Even now people are still arguing on the best way to tweak them. The recent rework allowed to partially solve this since people still remember the good ol’ days.
  • Quick lean (solved):
A similar topic to the sight is the ability to lean quickly. One of the mechanics that makes Siege unique is that you can always lean to make your aim slightly more on the left or right. While now it’s decently timed before you could lean in less than a second. This allowed skilled player to literally destroy enemies by hitting incredible shots, of course they couldn’t react for the limited time.
  • Utility meta (ongoing):
Rainbow Six Siege is a FPS which means it should be focused on shooting, the meta is slightly moving in the direction where a player is forced to fight against gadgets as well. Ubi is currently taking action against this problem.
