This guide will show you how to get Steam Deck running. After setting up controls, the game will run by default but it won't have music. This is a shame, as the soundtrack on PC is amazing. This guide will help you get the game up and running with the music intact.

Instructions in detail

This is how you do it. Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to take screenshots in Desktop Mode.
 
 
Important: Make sure that you have Protontricks enabled on your Steam Deck. This can be found by selecting Discover (the blue shopping basket) and then entering Protontricks into the search bar. Protontricks is represented by a wine glass icon.
 
 
1. Install Maui Mallard at Cold Shadow
 
You can do this in Gaming Mode, Desktop Mode, or both
 
 
2. If you haven’t, launch Desktop Mode
 
-You have two options: Hold the Power button on Steam Deck or press the Steam Button to scroll down to Power
 
 
3. Open Protontricks
 
 
4. When you see your installed games, choose Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow. 987410
 
-The game's icon has a Yin/Yang symbol
 
 
5. An error box may appear stating the following:
 
 
You are using 64-bit Windows Perfexy. Many verbs only install 32 bit versions of packages. Before reporting a problem, please test again in a 32-bit WINEPREFIX.
 
 
-Just click OK on this screen
 
 
6. Next, answer the question "What do you want?" Select "Select the default Wineprefix" and click OK
 
 
7. Next, answer the question "What would your wineprefix look like?" Select "Run winecfg" then press OK
 
If the screen keeps repeating, restart the Steam Deck to fix it
 
 
8. Select the Graphics tab in the next window
 
 
9. The box that says "Emulate a virtual desktop" should be the fourth down.
 
This allows the game display a picture. Simply use the command below to play music without displaying a picture
 
 
10. It should display 800×600 defaultly under the Desktop Resolution. This can be increased to 1280×600 but the game will be stretched when you play in Gaming Mode.

11. Once you have settled on a resolution, click Apply to close Protontricks
 
Important: The game may sometimes output to 1280×600, even after applying the changes. As of the date of writing (8/9/2022), I have not been able to find a permanent solution.
 
 
12. Launch Gaming Mode
 
-An icon is located at the top left of your desktop
 
 
13. Select Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
 
 
14. Select Settings (the Gear icon).
 
 
15. Select Properties
 
 
16. In the text box, under General, Launch Options, type the following:
 
 
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm=n,b" %command%
 
 

 
 
-This line commands allows the game's music to be played while it's running. You will not get sound if you don't set up the virtual desktop.
 
 
 

Controls

If you are unable to locate it, you can select the Keyboard template (WASD) or Mouse template and remap the keys to any button configuration you prefer.
 
 
ENTER – Pauses game
 
F5 or ESC – Switches full screen to window
 
ARROW KEYS: Move left and right, aim up and crouch
 
A KEY: Change between bug ammo and press, or morph between Maui (hold)
 
D KEY – Shoot your bug gun, or attack your staff
 
S KEY – Jump
 
Z KEY – Quickly transform between Maui or Cold Shadow
 
X KEY- Teleport, which actually means "run really fast" in Cold Shadow (hold and hold Left or Right).
 
 
These details can be found in the manual that comes with the game.
 
 
 

Conclusion

These steps should allow you to run the game on Steam Deck without any problems, and with all music intact. If you have any other issues, I do know that they used Proton 4.2-4 in the discussion I linked. However, I didn't have the force to force compatibility on Steam Deck for the time being.
