Thoughts on the Lover Talent Tree

Using the Lover Talent Tree

Hey all,

Okay, here are some quick thoughts on the Lover Talent Tree. Mind you these are all my thoughts, and your game-play will vary.

Overall the tree has 5 layers, all of which branch from “Enlightenment.” The Lover talent tree has a couple of weaker talents, but they can be made useful depending on your play-style.

Tier 1: Enlightenment – 2 slots
Effect: Bonus EXP
Grade: D

I’m not a big fan of Enlightenment. Bonus exp for this game seems as close as it can get to a waste. It gives diminishing returns pretty rapidly. If the talent was by itself, or wasn’t required to continue down the tree, it wouldn’t be so bad. But you have to spend talent points on it, to unlock lower tiers, which makes it doubly frustrating. Though, in its defense, the Lover’s talent tree has some strong, high-level talents.

Tier 2: Intimate Desire – 1 slot
Effect: Higher Chance of Rest rooms
Grade: B

There are a lot of options available to you in Rest rooms, the largest of which is spell improvement. Thus, more chances to find a Rest room, the better. This talent also leads to some of the stronger tier 3 talents. The only problem is, you can still have floors or entire adventures where you run into zero Rest rooms.

Tier 2: Gift of Love – 2 slots
Effect: Bonus Rare Card Chance with the Merchant
Grade: B

This is a fairly solid tier 2 talent. Anything that improves what the Merchant can bring is a plus. And, it also looks like it affects the chance that the Merchant will offer a Improved Rare card. As with Intimate Desire, this talent can be useless, if you never run into the Merchant.

Tier 3: Handj*b – 2 slots
Effect: Bonus Essence
Grade: B

Getting extra essence is always a plus. At the Merchant, Common cards cost ~8 essence, Uncommon cards ~12, Rare 16+. Not to mention forgetting cards has a rising essence cost each time you use it. Lastly there are events and magic items that use essence as well. Still, it can be fairly easy to top out on essence, which keeps this from being an “A” or “S” rating.

Tier 3: Dark Motivation – 1 slot
Effect: Randomly improve 1 spell
Grade: S

This talent is huge! There are a number of cards which become even stronger when improved, and others which can become downright game breaking when improved. More often than not, you’ll have unimproved spells in your spell book. As such, this talent is worthwhile for the entire adventure.

Tier 3: Warm Touch – 1 slot
Effect: Healing at Merchant
Grade: C

This talent can be a mixed bag. Healing is fairly uncommon, and most of the time in Rest rooms, you’ll be improving spells. In those cases, the healing can be a lifesaver. But, there are magic items that heal each movement, and other talents in the Lover’s tree that heal after each event. In addition, a well drafted deck will have adequate defenses to keep you alive. As such, I find this tier 3 talent to be on the weaker side.

Tier 4: S*men Demon – 1 slot
Effect: Significantly Reduced Cost of Temptation
Grade: S

If you don’t use Temptation, this talent is worthless. If you do use Temptation, this talent is amazing! Having 3 Lust is fairly easy to bank on. And this talent effectively makes Temptation cost 1.5 lust (as you’ll earn lust while it’s active). In fact, paired with another talent, this can make Temptation basically cost 0 Lust. The lack of improvement is also not an issue, as it reduces which spells the Dark Motivation talent and random dungeon events can affect.

Tier 4: Body Search – 1 slot
Effect: Bonus reward spell option after encounter
Grade: S

This is a solid tier 4 talent. More spell options = more chances to get the spell you want to use, more chances for rare spells, and more chances that you’ll be offered an Improved spell to pick from. Yes, there will be times when the spells you want don’t show up, but getting more chances will work to your advantage in the long run.

Tier 5: Deep Rooted – 1 slot
Effect: Healing at the end of encounters
Grade: S

This is another solid talent. This talent also couples with other talents that give you power when your damaged. Purposely take a point or two of damage, get the boost to power, and zorch away. It isn’t a lot of hit points, but, Deep Rooted will slowly heal you over time.

Anyway, just some quick thoughts. Hope that gives you all some food for thought.
