How to tame animals and where to find them.

Pets

Pets are tamed animals that can act as your follower and protect you on your travels. Some of them can be mounted which boosts your movement speed according to their speed stat.

Using a gene syringe crafted on the various crafting tables you can upgrade your pets to improve their stats and make them even stronger.

Taming Animals

You can only tame animals by using a pet collar on them. There will be a percentage to show the success rate to tame them and there will be a duration of time where you have to stand still while attempting to tame the animal.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Taming Animals - 1F5A6E5

Because you have to stand still while taming the animal, the best way to tame animals is to stack a lot of defense or evasion to survive the onslaught of attacks the wild animal might unleash on the player character.

Another method to safely tame animals is to position a wall between you and the wild animal. You can use the pet collar through walls as long as the wild animal is close enough to the player character.

It is still possible for some attacks to still hit the player character with how the hit-boxes work but the majority of attacks shouldn’t be able to hit you.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Taming Animals - E124A13

Pet collars can be crafted at the goblin workbench which is unlocked after defeating the goblin king at floor 1-4.

Some goblins on that floor can also drop the pet collars though the rate at which the pet collars drop makes it a very inefficient farming method as the crafting costs are rather minimal.

If you have trouble getting enough leather or wool then purchase goats and horses as you can massbreed them using grass and they both drop wool and leather respectively.

There exists a gene that buffs your chance to tame an animal. The beast whisperer.

It buffs it only by 10% but overall a really good investment as it reduces the amount of pet collars you’ll have to use in the long run.

The research material needed drop from thorns and baby beetles so this gene can be gotten quite early.

There are some creature that cannot be tamed. Those includes the humanoids like insectoids, zombies, meco workers or others you can encounter while exploring in the wilds.

If you still wish to take them with you then you can use the bone cage instead.

Bone Cage

A slower method to capture animals is to use the bone cage on them. The success rate of capturing wild animals is always at 100% but in exchange it will take a lot longer to capture them, making it more dangerous.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Bone Cage - AC5B86CKeplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Bone Cage - 84F433E

The bone cage can be crafted at the goblin workbench like the pet collar, though it only uses bones this time for the recipe.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Bone Cage - 5AAA7F1

If you’re out planning to tame a lot of pets at once then i suggest to use both pet collars and bone cages.

The reason being that you can only have one mount and one pet following you at all times, if you end up taming a third one then you’ll be forced to leave one of your animals out in the wilds while you run back to your base.

If you instead use a bone cage on the third animal then you can simply teleport back to your base, release the wild animal inside an enclosed room and tame them while in the safety of your base.

The Border Collie pet functions like a portable chest which works best for storing your caged animals as you’re in the wilds.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Bone Cage - A45C29A

Bone Cages can also capture creatures that cannot be tamed with the pet collar. Using this method you could transport meco soldiers from the lower floors, transport them to the surface and have them displayed in an enclosure of your choosing.

Gene Editing / Level Ups

Gene Editing Agents can be crafted from the workbenches you unlock from the Schip’s Lab. Each tier of workbench has an upgraded version of the Gene Editing Agents that can be used to level up your pets.

The level up can exponentially buff the stats of your pets into the hundreds, making it a necessity if you plan to take your pets deeper underground.

Feeding Pets

You have the option to automatically heal your pets based on how low their health is.

Medicine cannot be used to heal your pets, the only option is to use meals or raw vegetables.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Feeding Pets - DD2857F

The most efficient type of feed is the ‘pet food’ found on the stove. It uses monster meat, giant wheat and red mushrooms. All of these resources can be found aplenty except the giant wheat which needs to be bought from a farm shop as they occasionally sell giant wheat seeds.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Feeding Pets - B94AEBE

Because the pet food heals 30% at a time, setting the percentage to heal your pets at 70% seems to be the most optimal choice.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Feeding Pets - B89702D

Farm Animals

The easiest pet you can acquire are the farm animals by purchasing them on the surface from Herdsman shops. They provide wool, leather, eggs and meat which makes them a necessity to craft items in bulk without having to hunt monsters on the outside.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Farm Animals - CEF3159

Animals can feed on grass, eventually breeding more offspring, even if there aren’t any other animals present to mate with. This results in one cow spawning 10 cows after a few days of feeding.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Farm Animals - 862F408

Feeding Troughs are used to feed the animals your produce. They can feed on all type of feed but i’ll recommend grass as its free and can be found on the surface by walking around a bit. Right click on the Feeding Trough and place in the food to refill it.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Farm Animals - 0E88CCA

A tip of advice is to place the Feeding Trough right next to a fence. That way you can access the Feeding Trough from the other side of the fence without having to enter the enclosure.

Mystery Dungeon Eggs

Mystery Dungeon Eggs spawn animals that automatically tame themselves. Otherwise they cannot be encountered in the wilds or anywhere else.

The mystery dungeon eggs can spawn one of three types of animals: coobows, unicorns or border collies.

Coobow

There are 4 different coobows one can get from a mystery egg. They possess different abilities but what makes them truly unique is their shimmer ability which acts as a light source.

Border Collie

Border collies come in 6 different variations and like the other mystery pets also have a unique ability in addition to their personal ability. The storage allows the player to treat the border collie as a chest on legs. This ability makes them a good mount on exploring trips as extra inventory space.

Prison capsules spawn an animal that automatically tame themselves, making their use identical to the mystery dungeon egg.

Prison capsules come from invasions which i extensively covered in my invasion guide.

Surface

The guide will be separating all pets by their respective biomes. The surface biome in particular can drop pets from the temperate green biome, the desert biome and the snow biome. With the introduction of invasions we also have access to special pets through prison capsules which i already covered in the invasion guide.

Leopard

Leopards are one of the fastest mounts in the game, arguably the fastest mount you could get if you farm for speed stats. What makes them stand out from the other generic animals is its rarity, barely showing up at all even if you dedicate a good hour to explore the whole surface.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Leopard - C98CA07

The leopard is one of the few animals that has different versions of itself. The fur can range from dotted yellow, dotted white, dotted grey and pure black in colour and design. There aren’t any advantages or disadvantages so its purely cosmetical.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Leopard - 811DBFA

I mostly found leopards in areas that i haven’t previously explored yet, so its possible that leopards do not respawn in areas that have already been discovered on the world map. Though there is no guarantee you’ll find a leopard, it sometimes took me over 30 minutes to find one while running around with speed buffs.

Though a method has been found that can spawn a leopard with 100% certainty within 2 minutes.

The coordinates to which leopards spawn is consistent over different world sharing the same world seed. If you have a world seed that has a leopard spawning close to spawn then you can create as many worlds as you want using that same world seed and practically farm as many leopards as you want.

The place where i originally got this information from was in a discussion thread from Cellfire where he generously shared his coordinates with a leopard spawning within 100 tiles of spawn.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/747200/discussions/0/3388408347654448757/ – [steamcommunity.com]

The world seed they shared: 556654505

Coordinates of the leopard: x40 y80

I’ve farmed around 40 leopards using this method and they all had different stats and had either one of the four different leopard skins.

Boar King

The boar king is arguably one of the strongest pets one can tame in the early game and is tanky enough to survive the majority of bossfights with a good amount of pet food.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Boar King - 14A90E0

The boar king can only be summoned by eating boar glands which drop from wild boars found on the surface.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Boar King - 63CE411

The boar king has a charge ability that can break stone blocks which deal considerable damage, even capable of oneshotting players that do not wear adequate armor.

The easiest method available to tame or defeat the boar king is to summon the boar king in an abandoned meco facility. Not even the boar king is capable to destroy meco walls, making them the perfect barricade.

Coopapa

Coopapa’s are the taller variants of the coobow’s and give off a stronger light then their younglings as well. Their main ability is a flat 8% damage reduction for itself and its owner.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - 8B06C09

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - E900EA7

The coopapa aren’t found in the wilds but are summoned.

To summon a coopapa you need coocoo jelly. Coocoo jelly can sometimes be bought from the schip’s lab, otherwise find and defeat an angry coocoo on the surface. Angry coocoo’s are as rare as leopards and always drop a coocoo jelly upon death

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - ECD79CA

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - 6AF95A6

Consuming the coocoo jelly will summon a coopapa, opening a portal on top of your location.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - 389BFC8

Once summoned the fight will start right away with the coopapa being covered by an invulnerable shield that protects it from all types of harm, pet collars also dont work while the shields are up.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - 71218DE

To deal damage against the coopapa you need to wait until it starts summoning orbs around itself.

Each orb upon summoning will shoot three projectiles once towards the player and then lay dormant for a few seconds.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - 9F33767

Dormant orbs will eventually explode on the spot, damaging anything close to it. You can launch dormant orbs a few meters by hitting them with a melee weapon. If one of the orbs manage to hit the coopapa then the explosion will knockout the coopapa and take out its shield for a few seconds.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - AB71C2F

The timeframe while the shields are down is quite small so the best move would be to use burst attacks that deal a lot of damage in very short time. Once the coopapa wakes back up its shield will regenerate and the fight will continue off from there. Rinse and repeat until all its health is gone.

Keplerth - How to Tame Animals - Pet Guide - Coopapa - A5C0DA6

Once defeated the coopapa will drop a single doll coocoo, rarely a coocoo bomb will drop as well together with the doll coocoo.

While the coocoo bomb is a weapon, the doll coocoo acts as a portable backpack. Using it you summon a coocoo bank that disappears after 1 minute.
