Rarity Type
(P01)
Armor (and guns) are divided up in 3 types of rarity, rare, legendary, exotic. (I will not include common or uncommon).
RARE ARMOR: These are armor pieces that have only 2 mods slots, and average to low amount of stat points. I will not go further into rare armor.
(tip: these armor pieces you can use until you find something better. Or infuse it to make your current armor pieces better)
LEGENDARY ARMOR: These are armor pieces that have 4 mods slots, and average to high amount of stat points. More explanation about legendary armor below
RAID ARMOR: Same as legendary armor but with one extra mod slot
EXOTIC ARMOR: These are armor pieces that have 4 mods slots, and average to high amount of stat points. These armor pieces have various special effects. More explanation about exotic armor below
Kinds of Armor
(P02)
Armor is divided up in 5 kinds of pieces. Head, arms, chest, legs and class armor. The biggest difference is between class armor and the other armor pieces. Class armor doesn’t have any stat points (until you masterwork it, more on that later).
In the picture below I have included an entire set of hunter armor. As you can see the class item (hunter cloak) does not have any stats on it.
Stats/Attributes
(P03)
Stats determine different attributes of your character. There are 6 attributes in total, I will go through them from top to bottom.
Mobility
Determines your speed and jump height. The higher this number, the quicker you move and the higher you jump.
For the hunter it also determines your class ability cool down time. that means the higher this number, the quicker you will get your class ability back.
Resilience
Determines your shield capacity. The higher this number, the more hit points your shields will have.
For the titan it also determines your class ability cool down time. that means the higher this number, the quicker you will get your class ability back.
Recovery
Determines your speed with which you recover your health. The higher the number, the quicker you will recover your health.
For the warlock it also determines your class ability cool down time. that means the higher this number, the quicker you will get your class ability back.
Discipline
determines your grenade ability cool down time. that means the higher this number, the quicker you will get your grenade ability back.
Intellect
determines your super ability cool down time. that means the higher this number, the quicker you will get your super ability back.
Strength
determines your melee ability cool down time. that means the higher this number, the quicker you will get your melee ability back.
The higher the points in a certain attribute, the higher the benefit that stat gives you. Lets take a closer look at one item now.
You can see the amount of points in each attribute and below that the total amount of points on this armor. When you are getting gear, you will get duplicates of armor. But the amount of stat points, and how they are divided is random. (only class armor does not drop with stat points)
You want to search for the highest amount of stats, in the most beneficial attributes.
Tip: try to look for armor with 60 or more points on it.
When you hover your mouse over an armor that you do not have equipped you can press Q to compare it to your currently equipped armor.
The attributes where you want the highest point for differ between class and activity. please ask a fellow player or the community which attributes they think are the most important.
Legendary Armor
(P04)
Let’s take a closer look at an legendary armor piece.
1. shows the energy type of the armor ———-(L01)
2. shows The energy level the armor ———–(L02)
3. shows the infusion icon ————————-(L03)
4-7. shows the mods slots on the armor ——-(L04)
8. shows the power level of the armor ———-(L05)
9. shows you an stat overview of the armor —-(L06)
Energy Type
(L01)
Every armor will drop with a random energy type. Solar, void or arc energy
This determines what kind of mods your armor can hold. Mods are small effects that you can put on your armor, but some mods require that your armor is a certain energy type otherwise they won’t show up.
You can change the energy type by hovering you mouse over the energy symbol.
In this example, you can see that this armor has an solar energy type and has 2 energy levels.
If you want to change the energy type you can make the following choice.
Blue lined option
You can choose to change the energy type, but the armor will go back to energy level 1. This will only cost you one upgrade module
Purple lined option
You can choose to change the energy type and keep all energy levels. This cost you one upgrade module and some resources. The higher the level of the piece of gear, the more resources necessary to keep the energy levels.
Energy Level (upgrading, masterworking)
(L02)
As we talked about before, gear has beside an energy type also energy levels. The higher the energy levels, the more mods an armor pieces can hold. The higher the level you upgrade the armor to, the more resources it will cost.
If you upgrade an armor piece to level 10 it will be masterworked. Which means all attributes on that armor will receive 2 point bonus. If you master work a piece of class armor (which has no stats), it will give you the same boost please see the example below
Infuse
(L03)
In Destiny you can infuse an armor piece with a higher power level in to an armor piece with a lower power level. This will give the armor piece which receives the infusion the power level of the armor piece which it is going to be infused with.
If you hover over the infuse icon a menu will appear with the armor pieces that go in to the same slot as this armor piece and that you could use to infuse this armor piece with.
Let’s take a look at the menu
As you can see some armor pieces are blacked out, that means that these cannot be used to infuse those armor pieces in to this armor piece. This can be because they are a lower or the same power level.
Let’s hover our mouse over an armor piece that is not blacked out.
You see its the same armor piece (1), and it is a higher power level (2). Which means we could infuse this armor piece in to this armor piece, and it will cost us a 1000 glimmer (3).
Lets take a look at one of the blacked out armor pieces.
You see it’s a different armor piece (1), and it is a lower power level (2). Which means we can not infuse the armor piece in to this armor piece. But if we could, it would cost us an upgrade module (3).
If the armor pieces are the same, it will cost only glimmer to infuse. If the armor pieces are different, it will cost an upgrade module to infuse it.
Mods
(L04)
Legendary armor, can hold 4 mods, divided over 3 types.
General, armor mods, combat style mods.
Let’s take a look at these mods slots one by one.
GENERAL MOD
The first mod slot that we encounter is the general mod slot. In this slot you can put attributes/stat mods, this will give you either a small or bigger boost to the attribute of your choice. In the example below we are looking at a minor boost in our discipline stat.
1. Shows you the minimal amount of energy needed to slot this mod
2. Shows you the effect of the mod
3. Shows you the glimmer needed to slot this mod
ARMOR MOD
The second and third mod slots that we encounter are the armor mod slots. In these slots you can put different kinds of mods depending on what kind of armor it is.
Head, arms, chest, legs and class armor, each have their own mods that you can slot here.
In this example we are looking at legs, which means mostly scavenger mods show up here. Lets take a look at a scavenger mod.
1. Shows you the minimal amount of energy needed to slot this mod
2. Shows you the effect of the mod
3. Shows you the glimmer needed to slot this mod
If you look in the picture above, you also saw a mod, with the solar logo on it. These are mods that require your armor to be a specific energy type, before they will show up.
Let’s take a look at such an energy mod.
1. Shows you the minimal amount of energy and which type is needed to slot this mod.
2. Shows you the effect of the mod.
3. Shows you the glimmer needed to slot this mod.
COMBAT STYLE
The last mod slot, is the slot for combat style mods. These are mods that can be applied to all kinds of armor. A combination of combat style mods, will give your character more damage for example, will let you spawn energy wells, or war mind cells.
Let us take a look at 2 combat style mods.
1. Shows you the minimal amount of energy needed to slot this mod
2. Shows you the effect of the mod
3. Shows you the glimmer needed to slot this mod
1. Shows you the minimal amount of energy and type of energy needed to slot this mod.
2. Shows that some combat mods do not stack if you have multiples of these, some other mods do stack. It will be indicated here.
3. Shows you the effect of the mod
4. Shows you the glimmer needed to slot this mod
Power Level
(L05)
Show the current power level of the armor piece, to upgrade it infuse another armor piece in to this armor piece with a higher power level.
Armor Stats
(L06)
Here you see the stats of the armor, these determine different attributes of your character. Hover over each with your mouse to see a small explanation of what they do, also see the section stats, attributes in this guide.
Raid Armor
(P05)
Raid armor is the same as legendary armor, but for one thing only. They have one extra mod slot for raid mods. Each raid has its own mods, which you can apply on the armor of that raid. These mods are only active when you are in that raid, not in any other activity.
1. Shows you the minimal amount of energy and type of energy needed to slot this mod.
2. Shows you that raid mods are only active in that raid, not in any other activity.
3. Shows that some combat mods do not stack if you have multiples of these, some other mods do stack. It will be indicated here.
4. Shows you the effect of the mod.
Exotic Armor
(P06)
Exotic armor is the same as legendary armor, but for one thing only. They have a special effect exclusive to that armor piece.
Let take a look at a piece of exotic armor.
1. Shows the same system as legendary armor. Here you can switch energy type, upgrade the armor, infuse it, or slot mods onto it.
2. Shows you the special effect of the exotic armor piece. Keep an eye out for exotic gear. There are some great exotic armor pieces that will greatly enhance your abilities,
