Techtonica Starter Guide Walkthrough
First, a note of caution: I’m not very good at factory games. All the machines that I describe here (and in future walkthroughs of this game) are functional. Although they may not be perfect, an experienced player could improve something. But they will get the job done.
Now, let’s get moving! Turn right and walk straight ahead. You’ll see a Storage Box containing emergency supplies.
What you will find in the Storage Box
- 5 Copper Frame
- 11 Electrical Components
- 15 Iron Components
- 22 Copper Components
Collect these supplies. You’ll find the red Standard Pickaxe on a cabinet in the next hall.
Pick up the Standard Pickaxe and use it to break the Soil and Limestone that is blocking the exit.
You’ll hear a voice from “Sparks” when you break through. Sparks informs you that it is only possible to receive communications, and not send back.
Sparks asks that you walk to the Production Terminal and inspect it. Production Terminal Lima is the massive machine that’s on the other side.
Along the way, you’ll find a variety of materials and plants. Do not worry about them for now. You can walk straight to Production Terminal Lima.
Crafting Your First Items
A computer screen is located on the front of Production Terminal Lima. It displays the message: “Please Service, Required Repair.” When you interact with Production Terminal Lima, it will tell that you need 15 iron ore and 15 copper ore.
You will be asked to craft 2 Mining Drills. One for a Copper Vein, and one for an Iron Vein. Standard Pickaxes can’t mine Copper or Iron quickly, so don’t waste time digging it out manually.
Instead, we will Craft 4 Mining Drills. You can open your Inventory by pressing Tab. On the right, you’ll find a “Schematics menu”. Click on the Mining Drill 4 times to Craft 4 mining drills. The Mining Drills you have created will be added to your Hotbar automatically.
We’ll need to gather fuel before we can place the Mining Drills. Plantmatter can be collected by collecting the yellow Kindlervine and red fan-shaped plants.
Gather 4,000 Plantmatter from the nearby plants. This may seem excessive but it’s enough fuel to power your 4 Mining Drills and 4 Smelters (which we will Craft later).
Learn to Mine Ore
Then, place 2 Mining Drills next to each other to the left of Production Terminal Lima.
You’ll notice an interface when you inspect the Mining Drills. This is where you can put Fuel. Each Mining Drill will begin drilling immediately after you place a stack 500 Plantmatter.
You’ll find a Copper Vein to the right of Production Terminal Lima. Place two Mining Drills as before and fuel them to begin collecting Copper.
Run back to the Mining Drills and collect Iron. Drag Iron from their internal storage to your Inventory by opening their interface. They can mine ore quickly, and by now you should have all 15 Iron Ore that you need.
Unlocking the Basic Manufacturing Tier and Basic Science Tier
Once you have the Iron Ore run back to the Mining Drills and collect at least 15 Copper. Then, return back to Production Terminal Lima.
Drag the Copper Ore and Iron Ore to the storage at Production Terminal Lima. You don’t need to count out the exact amount. Just grab the entire stack and it will automatically put the correct amount in.
Press the “Repair Terminal”, and Production Terminal Lima will come back to life. You’ll see a message on your screen stating that “Tier Unlocked” and “New Technologies Available”. You’ll receive a new Sparks message if you exit this screen.
Learn how to scan items
Sparks says that you will need to Craft a scanner. Click on the “Equipment tab” on the right-hand side of the screen, under “Schematics.” This tab contains the Crafting Recipe of the Scanner. It costs 1 Copper Frame and a 1 Electrical Component to make. Both are already in your inventory.
The Scanner, like all other Crafted Items, will be placed automatically on your Hotbar.
The next step is to scan 3 “Smelter Fragments.” You’ll find them next to Production Terminal Lima.
You’ll be instructed to open the Tech Tree after scanning these Fragments. You’ll be told to open the Tech Tree after you’ve Scanned these Fragments.
Unlocking new items on the Tech Tree
Unfortunately, you do not have the materials needed to Craft all seven Research Cores. There is a cache behind Production Terminal Lima that contains supplies and several Research Core 380nm.
Scan the purple plant first with your scanner. Scan all plants and items in the area to unlock new items or to add entries to your Databank.
Then, continue straight ahead to the Research Core 380nm in the distance. It is located just behind Production Terminal Lima. You’ll find 3 Crates containing a cache of items:
- 24 Iron Components
- 36 Copper Components
- 35 Copper Wire
- 42 Mechanical Components
You will have more than enough materials to make everything you need. In your Inventory, select Schematics > Production and craft 7 Research Cores 380nm. Place the Research Cores next to each other near the Supply Cache.
You’ll be asked to open the Tech Tree. Click on the “Synthesis tab” and hold the left-click to activate the Smelter.
Smelting Ore Into Ingots
You can now construct a Smelter. Place 4 Smelters in front of Production Terminal Lima. Be sure to leave a few tiles between them.
You can now return to your Mining Drills, and collect all the Iron Ore and Copper Ore. You should now have 2 full stacks each of 250 Iron Ore, and 250 Copper Ore (or very close).
Take out your Scanner while you’re close to the Mining Drills and scan the broken-down Mining Drills. You may also see a red device on the ground. Scan it too.
Scanning three of these red devices will unlock “Fast Inserter”. This is not something we will be using right now.
Next, interact with every Smelter. Place 500 Plantmatter into each Smelter Fuel slot. Fill the 2 Smelters nearest the Iron Vein and the 2 closest to Copper Vein, with Copper Ore.
The Smelters are pretty fast, but it takes time to process the entire stack of Ore.
While the Smelters (and Mining Drills) are running, exploring this area is a great time. You won’t see much, but you can get some more Plant matter to use as fuel.
After a few minutes, you should have enough Iron Ingots or Copper Ingots to go around. As before, interact again with Production Terminal Lima. Provide it with 20 Iron Ingots. Then, press the “Upgrade Terminal button”.
