Hello and welcome, STORY OF SEASONS: A Wonderful Life – Fishing Basics Comprehensive Guide.
A complete guide to catching all the fish in A Wonderful Life and earning the “Fish Fear Me” award, as well as the three message in a bottle, golden axe, and legendary sword achievements.
Fishing Basics
In A Wonderful Life, fishing is simple. You must first obtain your first rod from Van on Spring 3rd, after which you can take it to any of the fishable sites and use it like you would any other tool. You will notice a fish in the water nibbling at the bobber and possibly pulling it down below the water, but ignore this. You’ll be looking for a chirpy sound and a small red exclamation mark. You will be instructed to reel it in. There’s no use in spamming the use button if you just need to use it once.
Fish are classified into four sizes: small, medium, large, and enormous. Catching large fish adds a particular entry to the encyclopedia for that fish. Large and huge fish are the most profitable to sell. Smaller or standard fish can be cooked or given as presents to locals.
Villagers that like fish as gifts are: Charlie, Daryl, Sebastian, Gary, Nina, Gavin, MukuMuku, & Baddoch.
Fishing Locations
Forgotten Valley has a total of five spots for fishing, each of which will only yield certain fish. The five locations are Turtle Pond, Goddess Pond Upper River, Lower River and the Ocean
The Goddess Pond can be found directly across the dig site from your farm, north of your farm. You can walk across the upper river area from the dig site to get here.
Here you’ll see the Sprite tree.
The Upper River extends from the waterfall area to the bridge.
The Lower River runs below the bridge between Vesta’s farm and town, and extends down to the ocean.
The ocean is located beyond Gustafa’s tent.
Turtle Pond is located next to Daryl’s lab, Gustafa’s tent, and Gordy’s trailer. There’s a large turtle with a red necktie here sometimes.
Fishing Rods
To acquire your first fishing rod you’ll buy it from Van and can get it on his very first selling day which is Spring 3rd. It costs 500 G. Upgrading your fishing rods will have requirements before Van will offer them in his shop.
Van charges 1,000 G for the first upgrade. You’ll upgrade to the Copper Fishing Rod once you’ve
- reached the 8th of Summer (Year 1 –
- Caught at least 50 fish
The second upgrade costs Van 10,000 G. You’ll upgrade to the Silver Fishing Rod Once you’ve
- The 3rd of spring (Year 2 )
- caught at least 200 fish
Van charges 50,000 G for the third upgrade. You’ll upgrade to the Gold Fishing Rod once you’ve
- reached the 3rd of Spring (Year 3 –
- caught at least 500 fish.
You will also be able upgrade to Goddess Fishing Rod once you reach Spring of Year 4. You’ll have to accept Gary’s request on the bulletinboard in order to get this one. He will ask for a large fish.
Gary must have high friendship status with you for you to get this request, and he becomes UNGIFTABLE after year one! Be sure to befriend him before moving on to year two.
I was able maximize his friendship by giving him only herbs, like the aromatic herb. But he also loves fish.
Encyclopedia of Fish
You’ll be able to catch more fish as you upgrade your fishing rods. Fish have no season or weather requirements. You will always be able to catch the fish from previous rods as well. You can check the encyclopedia next to your bed to see which fish you have caught. Fish marked with a golden crown are those that were caught in their “huge” variety. You will receive a Steam Achievement for catching every fish, and you will also get the “Fish Fear Me Wonder” if you catch them all.
I am still catching fish and will update this list if I find any incorrect information, such as the names changing since localization.
