Starfield – How to Solve the Mantis Puzzle: Quest Walkthrough

So, you’re playing Starfield and have stumbled upon the Mantis puzzle in the Mantis Lair? No worries! I’m here to help. By following this guide, you’ll find out how to solve the puzzle and even a neat trick to skip it altogether. Plus, I’ll show you how to kickstart the Mantis quest to grab some cool loot. Just a heads up: there might be some spoilers ahead, especially under the puzzle solution section. If you like surprises, be sure to avoid that part!

Where to Start the Mantis Quest in Starfield

Let’s get you started on the Mantis quest. First, find the ‘Secret Outpost!’ note. It’s usually on a Spacer’s body in the Nova Galactic Staryard, which you’ll visit during the ‘The Old Neighborhood’ mission (that’s the second one in the game). Don’t stress if you miss it, though, as there are several notes scattered around. Once you have the note, check it out in your ‘Notes’ inventory section. It’ll give you the outpost’s whereabouts, and then you’re all set to dive into the Mantis quest.

How to Find the Mantis Lair in Starfield

Are you looking for the Mantis Lair? Head to the Denebola I-b moon in the Denebola star system. Some planet names might change, but this moon’s always called Denebola I-b. You can get there from the Cheyenne star system, heading east, then jump to Groombridge. Before setting foot on Denebola I-b, double-check your gear and make sure your buddy’s set too. We had some not-so-friendly Spacers greet us when we landed. After you’ve dealt with them, follow the mission marker to the ‘Lair of the Mantis’ entrance.

Now, your job is to get to the bottom of the Mantis Lair. As you make your way, pick up any loot, mess around with terminals, and check out the wall recordings to learn more about the place. You’ll find some yellow safes, which might be tricky to open but have great stuff inside. We once found a slick pistol named the ‘Berserker Technophile’s Calibrated Razorback’ in one. After all that exploring, you’ll find Livvey, a scared NPC, near a door. Behind him? The Mantis puzzle awaits.

Cracking the Mantis Puzzle in Starfield

Alright, ready to tackle the Mantis puzzle? Here are three ways you can solve it in Starfield:

  1. Flip the switches to spell ‘Tyrannis’.
  2. Before touching the puzzle, hack the nearby computer.
  3. If you’re feeling adventurous, jump and boost over straight to the other side.

Jumping and boosting might seem easy, but watch out for those pesky turrets and traps! Thankfully, they didn’t hurt us too much. So, if you’re in a hurry or can’t find the computer, jump and boost over to the other side and open that door. Easy peasy!

How to Get Your Hands on the Mantis Ship and Armor in Starfield

If you like doing things the old-school way, start by spelling ‘Tyrannis’ with the switches, beginning with ‘T’. This will lead you straight to the goodies. But if you’re feeling adventurous and want some extra XP, aim for Rank 3 in Security Skill. The computer has a super tough Master level lock, but the reward is worth the challenge.

Once you crack the Mantis puzzle, gear up! There’s a bunch of tough robots waiting, all at Level 20. We found that frag grenades and a Bridger-type weapon with a 199 Physical attack power do the trick. And here’s a tip: we found the Bridger weapon on a Spacer in the area. Maybe you’ll get lucky too!

Keep going, and you’ll find a room with an elevator. Instead, head through the door across from it, and welcome to the real Mantis Lair! Follow your mission marker left, through a bedroom, and into the next room. That’s where you’ll see the awesome Mantis suit on display. Just open the door, and the suit, helmet, and pack are all yours.

Continue following the marker to the Starship Lift Controls. This raises the Mantis ship, the Razorleaf, up to the surface. Head outside, walk over to the marker, and bam! The Mantis ship in Starfield is all yours. It’s a cool ship and can be your main base. But if you ever want a change, talk to a ship tech at any spaceport.

Oh, and by finishing the Mantis mission, you also get a sweet 200 XP boost. Enjoy your new Mantis gear and ship!
