This guide will introduce you to serveral console commands for customizing your local play experience. Learn how to remove bots, take control of other characters mid-game and more.

Launching maps from the console and enabling LAN mode

You can launch any map in offline mode using the command: map <mapname>
For example, this command will start No Mercy Apartment Map

map c8m1_apartment
Once the game has been loaded type

sv_lan 1
This will put the session into LAN mode

Other players on your LAN can join you by using the connect command: connect <ip>
Since you are hosting, you can find your local IP by opening the Windows Command Prompt from your Start Menu and type ipconfig. Your server ip wil be shown as an IPv4 address.

If my address is shown 192.168.100.5, other players can join my game using the following command:

connect 192.168.100.5

Kicking bots

You can also kick unwanted bots by the kick command: kick <charactername>. So if you wanted to kick Bill, you could type:

kick bill
This way, you can turn Left 4 Dead into say, a 2 player affair instead of the default 4.
Kicked bots will drop their weapons and items.

Taking control of other characters

First enable cheats on your server

sv_cheats 1
Now, you can take control of other characters using the command: sb_takecontrol <charactername>. So if you wanted to play as Zoey, you could type:

sb_takecontrol zoey
