This guide is meant to help you get rid once for good of the boring rendering error in Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb

Overview

Notwithstanding Indiana Jones and The Emperor’s Tomb is a videogame of about 20 years ago, it runs very fine on recent Windows OS (Windows 7 and Windows 10 at time of writing) and it is well worth a playing thanks to its thrilling story and gameplay mechanic. However, from time to time, random render error may occurs, especially when the user performs alt + tab combo and then returns in game. Game suddenly crashes giving an error message like this:

ABORTING: (Render) Errors creating device: (0) [unknown error -2005530520] (1) [unknown error -2147467259]

We are going to fix it with very little effort.

Setup

All right, to fix the render error, you just need to perform very few steps:

1. Go to game root and delete “GameData” folder.
This will allow Steam to perform a clean installation of all core files. Make sure you backup your savegame and your “bind.cfg” file first otherwise you have to map your keyboard again. Remember: any mods you already installed will be gone and need to be installed again.

2. Open Steam Library and perform an “integrity files check” on our beloved videogame.
This will download a fresh copy of the “GameData” folder you previously deleted.

3. Now the magic: google for d3d8.dll released on GitHub by a kind user named crosire (current version at moment of writing is 1.11.0).
This file will ease out graphic compatibility between the videogame and modern OS like Win7 and Win10 and will, eventually, remove the boring render issue allowing you to alt-tabbing between videogame and desktop as much as you want. Download the dll file and move it over the following path:
…\Indiana Jones and the Emperors Tomb\GameData\bin\

4. You can now restore any savegame and/or “bind.cfg” file previously backupped (if there were any), launch videogame and start playing.

Final considerations

Oddly Steam does not include the aforementioned file among other default game files so users who are unaware of its existence cannot easily get rid of this compatibility issue. However, by installing the aforementioned dll file, you just accomplished your task and this guide end here.

That’s is all, enjoy your render error-free videogame!
