So, what’s this non-lethal damage thing all about? It’s a pretty nifty type of damage. Instead of killing enemies outright, it knocks them off their feet and puts them in a sweet slumber. What’s the benefit? You can rob them blind, tie ’em up for some hard-hitting questions, or simply haul them off to a specific spot for a quest or capture mission. It might not be an everyday mechanic, but it’s a real lifesaver in certain unique game situations.

How to Dish Out Non-Lethal Damage

Alright, so how can you start causing non-lethal chaos in Baldur’s Gate 3? Easy peasy. Just activate the non-lethal attacks mode in the Passive tab. Head down to the bottom of your screen and click on that Toggle Non-Lethal Attacks button. Once you’ve switched it on, any melee and unarmed attacks that would’ve sent your enemies to the afterlife will just knock them out cold. But remember, keep your ranged attacks and spells on the down-low, those still have the power to kill.

You’re in luck though. This passive ability is up for grabs right from the get-go, regardless of your character class. No pesky unlocking necessary. But, one small footnote: this won’t work on undead and constructs. They’re not big on the whole consciousness thing, so knocking them unconscious isn’t really an option.

Non-Lethal Damage: The Supercharged Edition

Non-lethal damage isn’t exactly new to the D&D world, but in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s been souped-up!   1. The BG3 game master seems to be inflexible on Non-lethal Combat.
    When you are hostile to an important NPC and knock him out with Non-lethal Combat, you have no way to wake up the NPC in a knockout state.
    It is impossible to use the knockout as a means of negotiation or problem solving.
    As an example, when knocking out Halsin, the druid held in prison in Act 1, the game master explicitly declares his death.
    Halsin will be in a permanent knockout state and will be missing after the Long Rest.
