Cancel for Free

Below your health bar, you will see a sign of how many free cancellations you have. Two crosses represent this

These can be used in conjunction to most but not all moves. Toggling the free button when you select a move is a good way to do this.

A Free Cancel gives you the ability to cancel your chosen move and change it into another move when your opponent is next. This allows you the freedom to choose a move to cover the opponents’ options and allow you to change your mind if necessary.

The GIF below shows that even though the Wizard did not cancel their initial attack, the Cowboy could easily punish it by using a High Block. However, by switching to a low kick, they were able to make the Cowboy guess which option they would choose.

Importantly, you will only be allowed to react if the opponent becomes actionable. If they make an attack that will hit you before you are actionable, you won’t be able to cancel your move.

Finally, cancels are only regenerated if you get hit. Getting hit will result in both cancels being regenerated.

While many more details are involved in using Free Cancels, they are beyond the scope of this guide. Play around and experiment, and you’ll soon see how it opens up the entire game.
