A brief intro on how to specialize your shop
 
 

Intro

Selling every type of object in your shop is playing the game on hard mode. But you can specialize your shop to make things easier for yourself. Pending an in-game explanation I will go into detail on how this system works over here.
 
 
 

How to specialize your shop

This is actually quite easy. All you need to do is only sell the items within a certain category, and customers will eventually stop asking for anything else. If you start out the game by only selling 1 category of items, your customers will never ask for anything outside of that category.
 
 
As of the writing of this guide, there are 6 specializations:
 
 

• Tailor – Sells clothing
• Farmer – Sells raw food
• Blacksmith – Sells tools
• Cook – Sells cooked meals
• Alchemist – Sells potions and remedies
• Resource Vendor – Sells raw resources
• Merchant – Generalist, you become this when there’s no specialization

 
 
 

Changing your specialization

If you’re already playing the game as a generalist but want to specialize (or if you want to change specializations), that’s luckily very possible!
 
 
Customers base their purchasing choice based on what you’ve placed in your store historically. They have a memory of 5 days, so you will need to be persistent for those 5 days and only place items of your new specialization in the store when it opens (as this is when your specialization is calculated).
 
 
During this time, there is a decent chance that you’ll miss some sales and perhaps make some customers unhappy. But in the longer term such a decision might be what’s best for your store and your profits.
 
 
If you want to see what your current specialization looks like, you can press Tab (or Y on a controller), and go to the Specialization menu. Here you can see what your current specialization is, and what items are part of that specialization.
 
 

 
 
In the gif above you can see the display history for each of the specializations of the last 5 days in the details panel on the right. If you exclusively display items of a particular item category, then your shop will gradually be renowned for selling in that category and as a result the customers will understand and alter their requests.
 
 
This mechanic allows you to specialize completely in one item category or specialize partially in several item categories.
