A step-by-step guide on unlocking ‘Wallowing in Failure’, with pictures!
 
 

Introduction

So, you’ve loaded up a new save, filled with a desire to absolutely ruin whatever remains of that poor sheriff’s life.
 
Well, it’s for an achievement, so it’s fine, right?
 
 
Indeed. In this guide, I will show you the exact steps I took to unlock the achievement ‘Wallowing in Failure’, so that you too, can ruin the Sheriff’s life.
 
 

 
 
Seems that I ruined this guy’s life first though…
 
 
 

The Escort Missions

There are three escort missions that you can fail.
 
 
1. Lt. Fort Hat Delivery
 
2. Rancher Bob’s Buffalo
 
3. Banker’s Package
 
 
(In that order)
 
 
In order to unlock the achievement, you need to fail all three escort missions while bringing along the Sheriff with you.
 
 
The Banker’s Package is failed last because the Sheriff will not return to Clintville unless the mission is successful, meaning that you cannot bring him to the other escort missions until you succeed.
 
 
(The escort mission can be attempted again and again, even if you fail. However, no matter how many times you fail, the Sheriff will stay at the Buffalo Express until you succeed.)
 
 
And succeeding, ain’t the name of the game here.
 
 
 

Getting the Escort Missions

Once you’ve arrived in Clintville, head over to the concerned wife and complete her quest.
 
 
Simplyhead over to the saloon, talk to the drunk husband, and when he refuses to go with you, talk to him again and pull out your gun. He will then follow you, so bring him back to the wife.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Then, follow the wife to the Sheriff. After he gets chewed out, speak with the Sheriff and he will give you the quest to escort Rancher Bob.
 
 
Afterwards, head to the bank. It’s to the upper left side of Clintville. Go in and speak to the banker at the bottom right of the bank. Ask him about a job. Accept the job he gives you.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Afterthe banker gives you his escort mission, head to Lt. Fort, which is at the bottom right of the map.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Talkto this woman here, and she’ll conscript you into the army, but more importantly, she will give you the order to get hats for the army.
 
 

 
 
Fast travel, run, or walk to Santa Anna, and head to the upper part of town. You’ll find the Haberdashery.
 
 

 
 
Go inside, and talk to the owner on the right. Tell her you were sent by Lt. Fort. Go through her dialogue, then head to the Buffalo Express, near the fast travel point in Santa Anna.
 
 

 
 
Head inside, and speak to the carriage driver. Tell him that you are here on behalf of Miss Hatt! Then, tell him you are a military man (because you are), then tell him that you have some things to do first.
 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 
Indeed, you do have more things to do.
 
Head to the Oil Tycoon’s mansion.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Head upto the Oil Tycoon himself. Talk with him and immediately draw your gun to show your courage. Who else would draw their gun on such an imposing man in a room filled with armed guards?
 
 

 
 

 
 
Holsteryour weapon. He will offer you a job to drive Rancher Bob off his land. Accept the job.
 
Now, you are ready to ruin the Sheriff’s life.
 
 
 

Lt. Fort Hat Delivery

Afteryou’ve done all that work, it’s time to begin pushing the Sheriff down the slippery slope to ruin.
 
 
Go back to Clintville and talk with the Sheriff. Ask him for help.
 
After asking him for help, you will see two options: Ask him for help with the Oil Tycoon or help with Miss Hatt.
 
However, there is a hidden, third dialogue option that is not visible! (See picture on the right, the arrow is barely visible under the second option)
 
Select that hidden option.
 
That is the option to ask for help with the banker’s escort mission. We will trick the Sheriff into helping us with the hat delivery, while he thinks he is helping the banker.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Afterpicking the hidden option, the Sheriff will say some dialogue. After he finishes talking, say that you need someone reliable.
 
He will ask you whether you really think he is trustworthy. Answer yes. (Not like there’s any other option…)
 
 

 
 
Fast travel back to Santa Anna and go inside the Buffalo Express. There, you will find the Sheriff waiting for you. Tell the driver that you’re ready to go and you’re off! (To fail)
 
 

 
 

 
 
Onceyou’re on the job, immediately shoot the sheriff three times to get him to flee.
 
This is to ensure that the Sheriff doesn’t somehow shoot enough unarmed bandits to succeed the mission.
 
 

 
 
In order to fail the mission, four packages need to be stolen by unarmed bandits (See left picture)
 
These bandits will not draw a gun, and will move up and down the screen until they reach the carriage. Leave them be.
 
 
But those other bandits brandishing their shootin’ iron at you? Feel free to shoot them dead.
 
 
Once you’ve successfully failed the mission, you should get some dialogue of the bandits celebrating. (See right picture)
 
 

 
 

 
 
You’llthen end up in the middle of the desert. Talk to both the driver and the Sheriff, then make your way to a fast travel station.
 
 

 
 
 

Rancher Bob’s Buffalo

Onceyou’ve made your way to a horse, whether in Santa Anna or someplace else, travel to Clintville and speak with the Sheriff.
 
 
Ask him for help again. This time, ask for help with Rancher Bob and the Oil Tycoon.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Hewon’t like the idea. Convince him by taking out your gun.
 
 

 
 

 
 
The Sheriff claims that you won’t be able to persuade him with these methods, but obviously you just haven’t taken it far enough.
 
 
♥♥♥♥/Ready the gun.
 
 
Then continue the conversation without holstering your gun.
 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 
Nowthat our Sheriff’s been convinced to get shot at again, head to Rancher Bob’s ranch, where you’ll meet Bob and the Sheriff. Agree to help Bob.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Time to ride out!
 
 
To fail the mission as fast as possible, shoot the buffalo yourself, until all of them are dead.
 
 

 
 
Once you’ve successfully failed the mission, the Beefhead Bulls will celebrate and you’ll find yourself at Lt. Fort with Rancher Bob and the Sheriff. You can speak to both of them.
 
 

 
 

 
 
 

Banker’s Package

Time to hammer in the final nail in the coffin.
 
 
Go back to Clintville and speak with the Sheriff again.
 
Ask him for help with the banker. (It’s the only option)
 
Then, tell him you need someone reliable.
 
 

 
 

 
 
He’llask you again whether you believe that he is trustworthy. You’ll answer yes. (Even if you don’t think he is anymore)
 
 
Travelto Santa Anna and go inside the Buffalo Express. The driver will ask you whether you are the one the banker sent. Answer yes. (Or rather, yessir!)
 
Then ride out straight away.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Once you’re out ‘protecting’ the carriage, shoot the Sheriff three times to get him to flee again.
 
Don’t shoot the unarmed bandits (See right picture), feel free to shoot the armed bandits.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Afterfour packages have been stolen, the bandits will celebrate and again, you will find yourself in the middle of the desert.
 
 

 
 

 
 
Afterthree failed escort missions, the Sheriff is finally at his breaking point. Talk to him to receive your ‘achievement’!
 
 
If you’ve done everything correctly, you should see the dialogue shown below.

Remarks

I made this guide after seeing how only 0.7% of players (at the time of writing) have unlocked this achievement. I felt that maybe, for an achievement about intentionally failing, that percentage should be higher, no?
 
 
Well, this concludes the end of the guide.

– Receive the escort missions from the Sheriff, the army, and the Banker.
 
– Speak to the Oil Tycoon about running Rancher Bob off his land.
 
– Fail the Hat Delivery mission
 
– Fail Rancher Bob’s Buffalo escort mission.
 
– Fail the Banker’s Package escort mission. (In that order)
 
– Speak to the sheriff right after the previous step.
