Here's a list of brain-teasing ideas. These will help you see how important red items are.

Let's get started

This guide contains a lot brain-teasing situations. This guide is meant to help you see how little reds really matter.

They are a trophy at best.

Scenario 1: Tanking

You use a shield when you are tanking. Why?

Shields increase push strength and allow the user to stun lock tougher foes than they could if they didn't have them. They also push with a naturally wider claw. Cata is a strong opponent, so tanks are crucial. They are strong and don't die quickly. The ability to constantly push the shield can allow damage players to function normally.

What stats are most important for a shield?

Push strength. Push strength is not a stat. Opportunist is a trait that allows you to push harder against attacking foes. This allows the shield stun-lock to tougher foes even if they attack and gain hyper-armor.

Red quality can affect traits

No. No.

A tank also needs a red weapon.

No. They can still do their job with an orange. Their performance can be affected by dropping to blue quality, but orange has very little effect on them.

But wait! I need 30% stamina renewal so I don’t run out of stamina when pushing! This guide is a joke!

You don't. You should use a combination that is sufficiently long to allow you to function with unlimited stamina. Spamming push is not a good idea. You can fill the gaps with combos or attacks.

Example: Use axe+shield to push-attack, heavy hit, and repeat. Using this combo, you should be able to recover enough stamina to continue the combo. Even if you run low on stamina, you can still generate enough stamina to continue the combination.

Try the dummies if you have trouble combing. This will improve your muscle-memory.

Senario 2: 1% Increase

A red and orange are often different by 1% power.

Now, I know a way to increase your strength by 50-150%. It doesn't require any talents or items. Is it possible to figure out the secret?

Headshots. A 50% increase in power is the lowest tier of headshot bonus. The highest tier of headshot bonus is a 150% increase in power. There are many tiers between. You might like that.

Which is better? 1% power increase or 50-150% increase in power?

C'mon man.

It's impossible to headshot everything. It's impossible. Don't be too proud to be realistic. This argument is absurd.

You can't headshot 100% of time without using some sort of third-party cheating software. A 30% headshot ratio combined with a 50% bonus weapon will result in an average 15% higher power output. 15% beats 1%.

A 50% headshot ratio combined with a 50% bonus weapon will result in an average 25% increase in power output.

A 40% headshot ratio combined with a 100% bonus headshot-bonus will result in an average 40% increase in power output.

Headshotting is far more powerful than red items.

Scenario 3: Strategy

Let's suppose that 3 people have fallen and that you are the last one standing. What can you do to save them? There are many correct answers.

Revive speed. This often overlooked trait of revive speed can be extremely useful in getting your teammates out from a dead situation.

Shield. Shield. A shield has a superior revival ability that allows you to tank elites without interruption. It can also be used to push trash out of the way, and reach people.

Ultimate. Depending on the game, an ultimate can sometimes be the answer to this problem. The huntsman should always have their invis ready so they can get at least three people up with the ultimate.

Clutch strats.

Notice how none of these solutions include red items. Reds won't save us, or is that because we don't need them?

Yes. Reds won't save you. Your strategy regarding build choices and personal tactics will save you. It all comes down to you and the choices that you make. You have choices in build and battle.

But wait! I need a 10% cooling down reduction because it may just save everyone. Is this not a valid argument?

Let's suppose Ranger is using his clutch invis. His cooldown is 120 seconds, which is the longest in all of the game. Your cooldown reduction might make the difference between an orange and a RED. That's 2.4 seconds. This could be significant. Let's now look at other cooldowns.

90 seconds: 2% Cooldown Reduction = 1.8 Seconds

60 seconds: 2% Cooldown Reduction = 1.2 Seconds

30 seconds: 2% Cooldown Reduction =.6 seconds

This is a small chance that your team will be saved in a matter of seconds.

What could save your team more quickly than a 2% cooldown reduction

Perhaps being able to spot a problem and using a purple potion to prevent it from happening? Great skills include anticipation, awareness, and judgement.

If you don’t have any potions, I would advise that you be more careful with your ultimate. Save your ultimate if you see a potentially dangerous situation.

Scenario 4: Killing Specials

People have shared with me that power levels are crucial for killing specials. Let's see if that is true.

Blightstormer. 100 meters away. You had a repeater rifle. He runs away. What now?

Play keep away. Keep your distance from the green circle. It's not like he escapes. There is always a plan B.

Okay, I'll go further. Your team will be trapped by the blightstormer and will suffer 60 damage. What happens now?

You could bring a healer. Ranger ultimate heals everyone for 30 Kruber ultimate heals 25 and can potentially give damage shield talent. Sienna ultimate heals anyone for 30. Warrior Priest can invulne 1-2 people and negate most damage. There are ways to reduce the negative effects of bad plays. This is why contingency-based classes are so great.

Barkskin trait is a personal solution that lowers consecutive damage. This trait can be used with an orange necklace.

This was the most common scenario that I can think of, with specials running rampant. I didn't mention a red item at all in that entire scenario. Funny, huh? It's almost as if red items don't really matter. It's all about your party composition and strategies.

Wait a second! My crossbow takes 2 hits just to kill specials if I don't have enough power. It's orange! This means that I will spend 100% more time on kills and consume 100% more ammunition. How about that? This is a huge deal.

You should get rid of single shot weapons. They are objectively bad at many things.

Fast weapons are superior because they can deal quickly with multiple threats. They are accurate even if you stand still. They also have an exceptional ammo economy due to the Scavenger trait. More ammo pool = more ammo generation. More shots = more crits. More crits equals more ammo generation. Synergy.

You are not affected as much if you use an orange fast weapon. If the power reduction pushes your past a break point that you require one shot more, it won't be as significant to you.

That covers it, I think.

If you're tanking: See scenario 1.

If you're damage: See scenario 2.

If you're support/clutch: See scenario 3.

If you're special killer: See scenario 4.

We hope that this has given you some perspective about how little reds really matter.

Disclaimer

Although not all of what I have said is true, it is easier to simplify and keep the guide short. The guide will have very few content and exceptions if I acknowledge every exception.

Single shot weapons, for example, are fine for certain classes like Ranger and Bounty Hunter. This explanation is important and may confuse readers. They will begin to wonder if there are other exceptions. I have made a general statement about fast weapons that applies to all classes. This is especially true if the orange quality item is used.

A guide is not meant for the expert player. Experts should already be familiar with the game and this guide should not be read by them.
