Get DLC, Mods, and Save Games working on Linux

DLC from origin

If you’re lucky, this may be fairly simple; If you’re less lucky, it may be a massive pain.

You will need to buy the base game from steam but if you can get it during a sale, it shouldn’t be too expensive.

The first time you open the game from steam you will be prompted to install origin. Log in to the account that has your DLC.

When you load the game, origin will open in the background (this is where luck comes into play).

Lucky you: According to some (windows) guides, origin will automatically download your packs and install them.

Medium Luck / What I did: Just as origin launches, when you open the game from steam, try to open the “Origin” menu in the top left and go to “Application Settings” (may take a couple of tries to get right). This should open the origin window so you can actually use it. From there you can change your settings (if you want) and then go to you game library. Locate the steam version of the sims, click it to open the game details, and download the DLC (I just queued them all up and origin worked its way through them). I did have to keep the game running while I waited but that’s a small price to pay.

Worst case: you may have to copy the files over from a windows PC with an origin version of the sims installed, similar to adding Mods/Save games.

Future DLC:

This was an accident; but I discovered if I had the game running, and I purchased new DLC in my browser from origin.com – [origin.com] , it just installed it.

Mods / Save Games

Essentially, this is the same as on windows only the directory isn’t easy to find.

For me the Mods folder was at

~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1222670/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods

And the Save Games folder was at

~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1222670/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/saves

If you plan on regularly adding mods, I would advise creating a link in your documents folder e.g.:

ln -s ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1222670/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/"Electronic Arts"/"The Sims 4" ~/Documents
