Did you ever join a server with friends and spend a few hours playing, only to log on the next morning to see the plane crash cutscene with nothing in your inventory? This guide may have the answer for you.
Intro
Most likely, you are here because something went wrong. This guide is about a solution to a problem that some of my friends and I encountered while playing on a dedicated server.
After we had played for a while, we were done for the night. We got back on the next day, and the game crashed again. This time we didn't have any inventory items. However, all the structures we had built were still there.
If this happens, this guide will be of assistance.
Important Note
First, it is important to remember that saving is a must when playing The Forest. You can save at a shelter or tent, or on the boat. This guide is not suitable for you if you have never saved.
The Fix
It is easy to fix your save. This is not a permanent fix.
To open the Run window, press "Windows + R". Now type or paste "%userprofile%\appdata\locallow" without the "quotes" and press enter.
Now you should be in your locallow folder. You can now navigate to SKS>TheForest>#################>Multiplayer>cs
Once you have moved to the cs folder, you will find one or more files. These are your multiplayer save files. You can look at the file details of each one, or sort by date modified, to determine which one was created the most recently. This is the last time you saved.
Once you have identified which file is your last save, copy it and move it to a safe place such as your desktop or another directory. We will return to this.
Now, open The Forest and join your server for the save you are trying to recover. You will now have the cutscene for the plane and nothing in your inventory.
Leave the plane and start to gather sticks, leaves, and other materials. To save your game, you will build a shelter. Once you have built the shelter, save your game and exit the server.
Now, we'll go back to the folder cs where your saves are stored. There will be a new file called "save".
Copy the name of your new save. Change the name of the old save (in the safe location) to match the new one.
You are done with the new save.
You can move the renamed save back to your cs folder.
That's it! You should now have all your inventory back when you open The Forest.
I hope you found this guide helpful. This is my first attempt at a Steam guide. Please leave feedback to let me know if it worked for you.
