Updated the Mann vs. Machine “inspect” command to only work for players in your party or in your Friends list

Introduction

 
On June 22nd 2021 TF2 got its summer update and with another round of disappointing effect locked cases came another disappointing change from left field to mvm’s inspect command (default f). 
 
Previously you could press the inspect button while looking at another player to look at their upgrade menu. This showed you 2 main things: Weapons and Upgrades. Currently pressing the button on non-friend or party members will now grant you this tiny message near the top of your screen: Team Fortress 2 - Tips How to Bypass the MVM New Update in TF2 
 
This change is presumed to have meant to combat toxicity although most high tours agree this is probably the least used tool for toxicity as most players used it to actually help people avoid broken upgrades and people that were toxic to others based on upgrades were usually based around 3 upgrades that are visible even without inspecting. 
 
But this is all besides the point, in classic valve fashion this change is almost completely useless which is what the rest of this guide will talk about. 
 
 

Spectating

 
First up is the most obvious one: spectator mode. By dying mid-wave you can spectate teammates and cycle through their weapons by pressing the inspect key and since upgrades are added as attributes to the weapon you can easily see what upgrades they have!

This works on canteens but does not work on body upgrades, but that’s ok because there’s a neat way to figure those out… 
 
 

Use your eyes dummy

 
Most upgrades can actually be seen just by looking at someone play! Crazy, I know. Here’s a list of all the ones I can think of off the top of my head and how to spot them. 
 
Bold underline are the most common complaints. 

  • One shot to crits? Doesn’t have crit res. 
  • Quickly dies to bullets/rockets/pills? Doesn’t have bullet/blast/blast res. 
  • Has little + above their head or their health is going up slowly when they are hurt despite not being by a dispenser? Has hp regen. 
  • Moving fast? Has move speed. 
  • Jumping high? Has jump height. 
  • Reloading fast? Has reload speed. 
  • Firing fast? Has firing speed. 
  • Heavy yells and then robots move backwards? Has knockback rage. 
  • Bots going yeet when pyro airblasts? Has airblast force. 
  • Bots disappear after gas thrown? EOI. 
  • Dies to small bots after a few seconds as opposed to a second? No HoK. 
  • Gains health after killing a bot? HoK. 
  • Standing on the teleporter exit takes you to the entrance? Two-way. 
  • Teleporter exit has an arrow on it? Two-way [unreliable] 
  • Buildings have 432/648/864 health? 1/2/3 ticks of building hp. 
  • Buildings have 216 health? No building hp. 
  • Smol mini-sentry? Disposable sentry. 
  • Dispenser reaches far? Dispenser range. 
  • Must hug dispenser to get ammo/hp? No dispenser range. 
  • Spy saps multiple robots? Sapper power. 
  • Medic overheals more than normal? Overheal mastery. 
  • Overheal decays slow? Overheal mastery. 
  • Medic uber lasts longer than normal? Uber duration. 
  • Medic uses a canteen and you also get the effect? Canteen spec. 
  • Medic shoots needles and robots get milked? Mad milk syringe. 
  • Scout/Sniper throws jar and robot goes slow? Slow jar upgrade. 
  • Banner lasts long? Buff duration. 
  • Soldier rockets stun robots? Rocket spec. 
  • Suddenly has 5 seconds of crits/uber or vanished or has full ammo and a sound played and a chat message popped up? Had canteens. 
  • Spy stabs giant and it loses large amount of health? Armor penetration. 
  • Melee swinging fast? Swing speed. 
  • Pyro not doing a lot of damage but swears they bought damage upgrade? Burn damage. 
  • Heavy shooting soldiers/demos and not getting hit by pills/rockets? Destroy projectile. 
  • Demo one shots giants? Damage. 
  • Soldier 1 shots medics/scouts/spies/snipers/pyros/demos? Damage. 
  • Sniper headshots giant and it loses more than 500 health? Damage. 
  • Pyro wave 1 in 2c? Didn’t upgrade brain cells. 
  • Shotgun based weapons hitting multiple bots behind each other? Penetration. 
  • Heavy hitting a giant medic through the giant heal target? At least 1 penetration. 
  • Medic has a red wall in front of him sometimes? Projectile shield. 
  • Medic revives quickly while not ubering? Healing mastery. 
  • Gets crits after getting a melee kill? Crit-on-kill. 
  • Pyro died but that giant is STILL on fire? Burn time. 
  • Sniper headshots a bot and then all bots around it die/get hurt? Explosive headshot. 
  • Engineer builds a sentry and dispenser without picking up ammo? Metal capacity. 
  • Player is far away from ammo/disp for a long time? Ammo capacity (or not shooting).

 
Things you can no longer see without spectate 

  • Engineer and Heavy Firing speed 
  • Multiple heavy penetration

 
 
 

Conclusion

 
I can no longer tell people about the broken firing speed upgrades. Toxic people can still tell upgrades and will not be less toxic. Revert change please.
