How to get all the achievements for Civilization: Beyond Earth

INTRODUCTION

Hello, and welcome to my guide for Civilization: Beyond Earth. Despite being a 2014 game, it is still one of my favorites (and the first one I have ever played from the civilization serie), and I hope you will find this guide interesting and useful. The base game includes 64 achievements, while the expansion pack called Rising Tide adds 26 more, totaling to 90. English is not my mother tongue, so probably there will be some mistakes here and there. Don’t forget to share insights and suggestions in the comment section.

1.0 – VICTORIES

There are 5 different ways to win in Civilization Beyond Earth: Domination, Contact, Promised Land, Emancipation and Transcendence; each one with a specific achievement.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 1.0 - VICTORIES - 2906B8CResistance is Futile

Achieve Domination Victory

The most straightforward of all the victory. All you have to do is to conquer all the capitals of other civilizations: wipe out any single unit or settlement on the map is not necessary. It can be achieved with any civ and any affinity: upgrade your units, expand your production rate and mine strategic resources for the powerful unique units to defeat your opponents. For a fast way start a duel size map with a strong military minded civ and aim directly to the enemy capital city, or deploy espionage as explained in the difficulty section below.

Achieve Contact Victory

If you are lucky enough to find a piece of the Signal with your explorer on progenitor ruins early in the game, this can be the fastest victory of all. Otherwise, you have other two options: create the Trascendental Equation (from Trascendental Math in the tech web) or launch a Deep Space Telescope (from Orbital Automation). Once you got the two pieces, complete the Decode Signal Project in one of your cities and prepare yourself to build the first planetary wonder: the Beacon. Save enough energy to activate the beacon once completed and defend it until the countdown ends to win.

Achieve Promised land

The first type of “affinity” victory. The first step is put in orbit a Lasercom Satellite (from Orbital Networks) and then research Nanotechnology to access to the Exodus Gate wonder. In the meantime, spend your affinity points until you reach level 15 in Purity. A little planning ahead will help immensely in the last phase of this type of victory: create a web of Magrails radiating from the tile with the Gate to the positions of the future colonists settlements. These settlements cannot be created within 3 tiles from any city or station, and they can only accommodate 6 colonists each, which means a minimum of 4 new colonies. Once the Exodus Gate is completed, summon 20 colonists (at rate of one per turn) via the portal and settle them to win.

Achieve Emancipation

Similar to the Promise Land victory, but with a twist: instead of letting units emerge from the portal, you put them in. The first part is identical to the achievement above: launch a Lasercom satellite to establish contact with earth, reach level 15 of Supremacy and build the Emancipation Gate (after researching Hypercomputing) in one of your cities. Once completed the portal, send one military unit per turn into it until you reach the 1000 points required. The more powerful the unit, the more points it is worth – build an army of Angels or other heavy hitters and send them in the portal to achieve victory.

Achieve Transcendence

The most science focused among the victories. The ultimate goal is to create the last victory wonder: the Mind Flower. Science is key because the 3 techs you need are all over the place in the research web, so carefully plan your queue to cut down on time. After obtaining Nanorobotics, Transgenics and Swarm Intelligence, reach level 15 of Harmony and build the Mind Flower. Once completed, protect it until you achieve victory. To speed up the latter part of the whole process you should build a Mind Stems and a Xeno sanctuary in each of your cities: the more of them, the fewer turns waiting for victory. Keep in mind that you must build these before the Mind Flower, or they won’t affect the countdown.

Achieve one of each other victory

Exactly as the description says.

2.0 – MULTIPLAYER

There is a single multiplayer achievement in this game. As explained below, it doesn’t even require a human adversary, so you don’t have to worry about empty servers.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 2.0 - MULTIPLAYER - 71A244ACylon Computer Virus

Win a multiplayer game

Just play and win a skirmish against yourself with the Hotseat mode. Hotseat is a very useful tool to speed up your achievements earning process, all you need to do is play on a duel map with only 2 player, both controlled by you. The most important thing to remember is that you need to pursue the achievements with the first player, or they won’t unlock.

3.0 – DIFFICULTIES

There are 6 level of difficulty in Beyond Earth. I will explain how to achieve only the hardest one (Apollo) below, but that strategy can be applied to all difficulty level.

There are 2 ways to take on the game on Apollo difficulty, both are domination victory which means you win by conquering all the other civilizations capitals.

The first one is the espionage route: if the level of intrigue in the enemy capital reaches the maximum you can execute a Coup D’état, gaining control of the city and winning the game.

Start a game against a single opponent: I suggest picking ARC for the faster cover ops bonus. Make a beeline to Computing in the tech web and then build a spy agency. Send your agent in the enemy capital and increase the intrigue until you can try the coup d’état. Save before the last turn and reload if the operation fails, because in the latter case the target civ will immediately declare war on you.

In theory this should work even better with the expansion pack Rising Tide: with the powerful bonuses of the artifacts (Soul Discerner Training) and personality traits (Subtle), cover operations are quicker and more effective. In practice however, espionage was severely nerfed and patched, with a single agent in the enemy capital now almost able to block all your efforts.

The second way to achieve a quick victory on Apollo difficulty, is to exploit the ridiculous low strength of cities in this game, especially at the beginning. Setup a new game on a Duel map against a single opponent and in the advanced option menu, choose coastal start for all players. Once in the game you have 2 priorities: first, create a small fleet with at least a single naval melee and a 2/3 ranged ships. Second: gain 2 affinity points, it doesn’t matter which ones, to upgrade your gunboats and patrol boats to increase their combat strength. Send you explorer to any progenitor ruins/device for affinity points and crashed/sunken satellite/spacecraft for the production bonus. Speed is essential as the enemy will become stronger with each turn.

Once your fleet is ready, approach the enemy capital and declare war. A few turns of bombardment from the cruisers will reduce the city strength to zero. Attack directly with your naval melee unit at the right moment and conquer the enemy capital to win.

4.0 – MAPS

There are 15 achievements in this category, divided by size and map type.

4.1 – Maps Size

You can select the dimension of the map in the setup menu at the beginning of any game. Oddly enough, the tiny and large map achievements are labeled incorrectly: in-game they correspond to dwarf and massive map respectively. You will get this naturally while playing.

4.2 – Maps Type and Biomes

In addition of how large a map can be you can also choose a specific type and biome in the advanced setup menu (or select one of the preset planets). Specific biomes are required for the unique marvel quests, see at the end of the guide for more information.

The description says all. Keep in mind that the biomes added with the Rising Tide expansion (primordial and frigid) don’t count for this.

5.0 – SPONSORS

The base game introduced 8 civilizations (or sponsors as they are called), each one with a game victory achievement. Contrary to the other games from the civilization series, the affinities are really meant to shape the game, as the sponsors unique abilities are quite underwhelming. Therefore there is no detailed strategy for any of them. Things become even blurrier with the expansion Rising Tide, since you can adopt and change mid-game unique traits to better suit the situation.

Win at least one game with each leader

Similar to the maps achievement this one requires only the 8 civs included in the base game.

The expansion pack adds 4 more sponsor, for a total of 12 in the entire game. The additions are more focused on the new political capital and aquatic dynamics, but they still aren’t particularly impressive. Feel free to pursue any victory type or strategy you like.

6.0 – VIRTUES, AFFINITIES AND ARTIFACTS

The following sections explore various game mechanics (both in the base game and the expansion pack) and their achievements.

6.1 – Virtues

Virtues are a unique concept introduced in this game. They are divided into 4 main categories: Might, Prosperity, Industry and Knowledge. It is possible to obtain a virtue after sufficient culture has been accumulated, but with each acquired virtue the cost of the following increases accordingly. Virtues are fundamental in shaping the game and produce powerful bonuses, so it is always advisable to acquire as many as possible.

Unlock All Tier 1 Virtue Synergy Bonuses

Synergy bonuses are marked on the left side in the virtues menu. Each bonus requires a certain number of virtues (from any category) of the same tier to unlock. There are three tier 1 synergy bonuses, which means that you need 15 tier 1 virtues in total to get this.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.1 - Virtues - 12AEC73For a Few Dollars More

Unlock All Tier 2 Virtue Synergy Bonuses

Same as above, only more time-consuming because you need to unlock tier 1 virtues before you can unlock the tier 2. There are 2 synergy bonuses for a total of 12 tier 2 virtues required to get this achievement.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.1 - Virtues - FFE2922Once Upon A Time In Space

Unlock All Tier 3 Virtue Synergy Bonuses

Again, very similar to the achievement above, only longer. Thankfully you need only 10 tier 3 virtues to unlock this achievement.

6.2 – Affinities

There are 3 Affinities in the game: Purity, Harmony and Supremacy, each one with a maximum reachable level of 18. You will collect affinity points mostly through research in the tech tree and by completing certain quests. Bonus affinity level can be also randomly acquired from expedition on progenitor sites. In addition to allowing the planetary wonders for the respective victories, affinity points are necessary for the construction of the ultimate units, with the minimum threshold of level 12. The hybrid ultimate units introduced in the Rising Tide expansion require at least 5 points of each affinity they are part of.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.2 – Affinities - 276CEEBSo Say We All

Achieve Max Level in Purity

As mentioned before, the maximum level for any affinity is 18. Once you reach that you will unlock this. Keep in mind that the wonder Memetwork reduces the minimum requirement for units/wonders, but it doesn’t affect the maximum point level.

Achieve Max Level in Supremacy

Same as above.

Achieve Max Level in Harmony

Same as above

Hybrid affinities are introduced in the expansion pack Rising Tide: they can provide specialized units and bonuses to your game, even if they don’t have a unique victory on their own.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.2 – Affinities - B21F9B2More Than Meets The Eye

Unlock a Hybrid affinity level

Very Easy. You will a reach a Hybrid level when you acquire at least 2 points from 2 different affinities (2 purity and 2 Harmony for example). Done.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.2 – Affinities - E8697D6Best of Both Worlds

Build a Hybrid Ultimate unique unit

There are 3 ultimate hybrid units: the Throne (Purity-Harmony), the Golem (Purity-Supremacy) and the Aquilon (Harmony-Supremacy). Each of the them needs at least 5 points from both affinities required and different strategic resourses, so plan accordingly if you want to pursue one of them.

6.3 – Artifacts

Introduced with the Rising Tide expansion pack artifacts are powerful tool if correctly used. All of them required scouting the map for resource pods, ruins, satellite, settlements, spacecrafts and even alien nests to be found.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.3 - Artifacts - 97B9EECIt Belongs in a Museum

Find an Artifact

Pretty easy. Send your explorers scouting around and you will get this very quickly.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.3 - Artifacts - 950C140X

Collect 50 Artifacts

Less troublesome than it looks. Artifacts are discovered quite easily (save for the progenitor ones), especially if you send out a considerable number of explorers early in the game before your opponents. Keep playing and you will get this.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.3 - Artifacts - 51FC5DCYou Have Chosen Wisely

Cash in an Artifact of each category

There are 3 categories of artifacts: old earth (pods, derelict settlement, satellites, etc…), alien (from nests and skeletons) and progenitor (ruins and devices). Consume the 3 artifacts (it doesn’t matter what for) in the artifact screen to unlock this.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 6.3 - Artifacts - ABE27DFFortune and Glory

Build all Artifact Wonders

One of the most time-consuming achievement. There are six artifacts wonders in total: Machine-Assisted Free Will, Tessellation Foundry, Temporal Calculus, Relativistic Data Bank, Quantum Politics and Dimension Folding Complex. Each of these requires the rare progenitor artifacts, so you can see why it will take time. Try to acquire as many artifacts as you can and direct your explorers on any progenitor ruins/device you have found.

7.0 – MISC ACHIEVEMENTS

These achievements can be completed with any civ and on any map, save when specified otherwise. They are divided in two groups according to their difficulty and time required to unlock them.

7.1 – Easy Misc Achievements / Base Game

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.1 - Easy Misc Achievements / Base Game - C7E1BC7Light This Candle

Launch an orbital unit

Very easy. Chances are you will find a solar collector in a supply pod in the first turns of the game. Send it to orbit to achieve this.

Steal a tech

Research computing and build the spy agency. Now all you need is to send your agent in to the city of any civ and raise the intrigue level to 2 and attempt the tech thief. You can always save the turn before the completion of the covert ops and reload if it ends in failure to pursue a different outcome. To speed up the process you can play as ARC or acquire the Soul Discerning Training bonus with artifacts to reduce the operation time.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.1 - Easy Misc Achievements / Base Game - 231EDC8Enemy Within

Kill an enemy spy

Research computing and build a spy academy. At any level of difficulty, you will be eventually notified that the intrigue has been increased in one of your cities: the sign that one of your opponents have sent a spy there. Assign one of you agent to that city: the enemy spy will escape or be killed, triggering the achievement. Sometimes an enemy spy can be killed even without the presence of one of your agents, but I cannot confirm if it is a bug or just a very rare occurrence.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.1 - Easy Misc Achievements / Base Game - 3098583 The Machineries of Joy

Build any wonder

Wonders are a bit underwhelming in this game, especially in relation to their enormous production cost. Luckily the first ones you can get don’t require additional resources and can be constructed quite early in the game, like the Panopticon or the Abyssal mirror. Keep in mind that the artifacts wonders don’t count for this.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.1 - Easy Misc Achievements / Base Game - 6485650Game over, man!

One Hit Kill

Once you upgrade your units with affinity points, this one will be pretty mundane, especially with aliens.

7.2 – Easy Misc Achievements / Rising Tide

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.2 - Easy Misc Achievements / Rising Tide - 665E09ALet’s Make a Deal

Create an Agreement

Once you meet another civ during the game you can open diplomatic relations with them. Make them sign up an agreement of any kind and you will get this. Done.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.2 - Easy Misc Achievements / Rising Tide - 34DBFBFLiberty Bell 7

Complete an Expedition on an aquatic crashed satellite

Crashed satellite are quite common, but are generally found on land tiles, much less on water. Keep searching until you find one with one of your explorers.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.2 - Easy Misc Achievements / Rising Tide - A067C5DSplashdown

Found an aquatic city

You can achieve this in the first turn of any game with Chungsu or the North Sea Alliance if a water tile is inside your landing zone. In any case you can build a colonist and found an aquatic city in any game with coast or ocean on the map.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.2 - Easy Misc Achievements / Rising Tide - 4B69830The Voyageur

Move an aquatic city 50 times

It is better to have a fully develop city with high production rate and a Thermohaline Rudder installed to reduce cost and time before attempt this. Playing as the North Sea Alliance helps too.

7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game - DA23D4142

Research All Techs

Science production must be prioritized at all cost with tile improvements, artifacts, buildings and specific techs. The virtues in the Knowledge tree and the Steal Science/Technology cover operations are your best friends in this pursuit. The artifacts wonder Machine-Assisted Free Will is incredible useful for this thanks to the overall science cost reduction.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game - 8180BBEValley of the Time Tombs

Build all wonders (Base Game)

Keep tracking of the wonders you have already constructed through multiple games is essential as you have a grand total of 29 of them to build. There is no specific strategy here, as this can be done on any difficulty and any map. Keep in mind that the wonders from the artifacts and the victory projects don’t count for this. The wonders included with the Rising Tide expansion also shouldn’t count for this, but I cannot confirm it.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game - A0D9B56There is no Try

Get beaten to wonders 10 times

The AI will always attempt to rush the same wonders at specific time in the game like the Ectogenesis Pod and the Stellar Codex, so you can exploit this if you plan in advance. If you play on high difficulty you will get this naturally, as the AI has a high production bonus to rush wonders. If you want to speed up the whole thing, you can play on a Hotseat game with two civs: start building the same wonder at the same time and then let the second civ you control to beat the first one to count it toward the achievement goal.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game - AA8FCDFEnergize

Develop a city to produce more than 100 energy per turn

Not too many issues with this: in the late game the available energy buildings are numerous and the nodes/generators output even higher thanks to specific techs like Organics or Planetary Engineering. It is even easier when you have a geothermal tile to improve and the Vertical Farming/Biometallurgy techs to increase the energy output of your farms and mines respectively. Even if all of that is not enough, manually set the focus of your citizens on energy production to reach the target. Several virtues from the Industry tree can provide useful boost to the energy production of your city.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game - 6FEDA79What Was Once Only Imagined

Develop a city to produce more than 100 science per turn

Similar to above, but with science instead of energy. In addition to specific techs and improvements, the Knowledge tree has several virtues that can be exploited for this.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Achievements Guide - 7.3 – Hard Misc Achievements / Base Game - 5AD8E4FMighty Fine Shinding

Develop a city to produce more than 100 culture per turn

Again, the Knowledge virtues are very useful for this too thanks to powerful bonus for culture production. A shame that Monomyth is it at the very end of the virtue tree, because the culture bonus production will synergize with any city with several wonders, making this mere formality.

Killed Siege Worm

At the start of the game siege worms are a pain to deal with due to their strength and the weakness of your unit, but after enough affinity upgrades you won’t have any problem later. A simple trick to achieve this early in the game (so that you can reap the reward from the worm killing quest) is to use a cruiser and bombard the worm from the sea without any fear of retaliation. Another way is to deploy one or two Nanohive and progressively grind the worm health to zero.

500 Aliens Killed

Not particularly hard, just time consuming with multiple games required. Once your affinity level is high enough, your upgraded units will have no problem in wiping out aliens, siege worms and krakens included. You can just park your troops next to an alien nest and keep killing any bugs it will come out. A good strategy is to place a couple of Nanohive next to a nest: their combined swarm ability will wipe out any alien in the same turn they appear while remaining hidden. This way the aliens won’t even become hostile to you.

Raze 100 Alien nests

Similar to above. You will get this through multiple games. Keep in mind that alien nests will respawn once destroyed on any strategic resource (floatstone, firaxite and xenomass) with miasma.

Purchase 1000 Tiles

You will get this naturally while pursuing the other achievements. The Kavithan Protectorate with the updated (RT) special ability (reduced cost to acquire new city plots) is naturally suited for this. The political trait Expansionist is also recommended.

Win without controlling any land cities

The only way to achieve this is with either Chungsu or the North Sea Alliance as the only civs that allow an aquatic capital. Any type of victory on any map on any difficulty work for this: feel free to employ whatever strategy you like.

Kill a unit by moving an aquatic city onto it

This one can be a little frustrating since you need to correctly guess where the enemy unit will move the next turn to intercept it whit your city. One way to prevent this is to block any enemy movement by surrounding it with your units. In this case, however, the enemy could potentially kill himself attacking one of your strongest units in their turn or destroy one of your weakest and escape, wasting the whole effort. If you want to save time play a Hotseat game and use the player one aquatic city to crush a player two unit. If you want to do it legit, keep in mind that aliens count for this.

Build all aquatic Wonders

The aquatic wonders introduced with Rising Tide are six: the Abyssal Mirror (from Geoscaping), the Benthic Auger (Servomachinery), the Euphotic Strand (Vertical Farming), the Faraday Gyre (Power Systems), the Guo Pu Yaolan (Cognition) and the Akkorokamui (Photosystems). You can technically build them all in a single game, but with the one exception of the Guo Pu Yaolan they all require secondary technology that makes things take longer. The good news is that none of them require specialize resources, and their production cost is relatively low. You may want to prioritize Faraday Gyre and the Abyssal Mirror, as in my experience these are the wonders the AI will pursue first.

Leash a Colossal Alien

The only way to capture one alien unit is with an explorer with the leash ability, from Alien Lifeforms in the tech web. Beware though: colossal aliens (krakens, the siege worms and makaras) can be leashed only after you researched the Alien Domestication tech (in addition of the aforementioned Alien Lifeform) and reach the level 9 in Harmony. Your explorer needs to be one hex next to the target with enough movement points (and possibly on full health) to leash the alien, so plan accordingly.

Win a game without starting a war

Total doable on low difficulty, but still achievable on hard. If you want to increase your chances, play on a large map with just a couple of opponents to reduce competition for land and resources. Any type of victory (except Domination) will work for this.

Kill 10 units with Invisible units

There are 3 invisible units in the game: the Submarine, the Nanohive and the Geliopod. If you don’t want to waste too much time on this build a Nanohive and deploy it near an alien nest for easy kills. As explained before it helps with The Only Good Bug is a Dead Bug achievement.

Attain full Fear and full Respect with another player

Building a wonder and high health/energy/science/production rate always rise your respect (the opposite is also true). Keep in mind that the moment you build one of the planetary wonders (especially the Mind Flower) your respect will plunge immediately. Same thing if you complete one wonder the other civ was pursuing. Fear is relative to your military might: a massive, fully upgraded army will do the trick.

Produce 100 Diplomatic Capital per turn

Diplomatic capital can be acquired in different ways, from active political agreements to specific traits or marvels. With the right combination of the above you won’t have any problem achieve this, especially in the late game or on lower difficulty.

Complete a Marvel quest

Build as many explorers as you can at the start of the game to speed things up, because this will take a while. The quests will start for all the players in the game once a marvel is found on a map: so be prepared for a rush for all the required tiles. Keep in mind that any unit can be used to explore marvels, not only explorers. If you are tired of the AI players exploring the marvels tiles before you and preventing you from completing the quest, use a Hotseat game.

Complete all Marvel quest

Same as above, but it will require multiple games. There are six marvel quests in total, and they can be only found with a specific biome. They are: Hydrocoral Overmind (any biome, requires water on the map), Monstrous Alien Remains (lush), Ancient Alien Structure (frigid), Ancient Alien Metropolis (arid), Colossal Alien Fungus (fungal) and Massive Meteorite Crater (primordial). Once you completed each of them at least once the achievement will unlock.
