This guide explains how to cripple the AI with the OP nature of markets.

Step 1: The Basic Setup

In order to break the game with markets you’ll need to consider a few things at the start of campaign. For starters you’ll want to set the number of starting resources to one and have this resource appear near your starting location. After all, your going to need a lot of gold for this trick.

Secondly you’ll need to see if it’s possible to completely surround the AI with markets or other buildings. If it’s impossible to box them in then you’ll need to start a fresh campaign and see if the AI has spawned in valid positions. If you want a decent map for going up against four enemy kingdoms as the Vikings I’d recommend using the map code 1,174,775,923 with landmass set to large.

Step 2: Building and Expansion

Your going to need to setup a decent military force in order to deter the AI from attacking you; so I recommend setting up at least two full forts worth of men as a deterrent as well as sending your king or a mercenary general out to start capturing villages. After all, your going to bleed money in the early stages of this exploit.

Outside of sending your king or general out to capture new villages your going to want to send some construction workers out to start surrounding the AI Kingdom(s) with markets. You can also use other buildings like Science Towers and Inns, but markets are the most cost effective at 60 gold to build and 30 gold to maintain on a yearly basis.

Admittedly once you’ve surrounded the AI kingdoms with markets that could be considered a trick in and of itself since the AI will no longer be able to expand there holdings. You can also maintain an alliance with even a highly aggressive AI indefinitely once it’s been trapped.

Of course, this is hardly enough to call markets OP in my opinion. After all, crushing a bunch of weak AI’s means you’ll still need to devote time to building an effective army. Even if you can crush them one at a time this way.

Step 3: Getting the AI to Kill Itself

The final step to breaking the game with markets requires you to blow up your mine and one of your markets keeping the AI trapped. Albeit your going to be reestablishing your market as soon as the AI gets a single miner outside of the barrier. After all, you need the barrier in place to get the AI to destroy itself. You see once the miner builds a mine for the AI it will begin sending peasants towards the mine in order to establish its economy, but with your barrier once more in place the AI will be unable to reach the target destination and will begin killing its own men in a bid to clear the way to the target. This means you can trick the AI into murdering all of it’s peasants. And without any peasants to tax the AI’s economy will eventually collapse and force it to surrender to the player.
