What each ending means and how to get them

INTRO

In this guide, we’ll walk you Sekiro’s four endings — one that’s generally bad, and three that are generally good. Here’s a broad overview of each:

  1. Shura ending (the bad one), in which you side with Owl and end your game early.
  2. Immortal Severance (Divine Dragon’s Tears only), in which you stay loyal to the Divine Heir and find the item he asks for.
  3. Purification (Divine Dragon’s Tears + Everblossom), in which you stay loyal of the Divine Heir, find the item he asks for, and follow Emma’s wishes to find an additional item.
  4. Dragon’s Homecoming (Divine Dragon’s Tears + Frozen Tears), in which you stay loyal of the Divine Heir, find the item he asks for, follow Child of Rejuvenation’s wishes to find an additional item.

Below, we’ll walk you through the steps you need to take for each of these endings.

At the end of this guide, we’ll give you the synopsis of each ending to help you decide which path to take. Use this if you want more context (or you’re just having trouble deciding which ending you want).

Before you go any further, though, there are obviously some major spoilers below.

SHURA ENDING

This is the earliest ending you can get in Sekiro. It’s also the “bad” ending.

  1. Defeat the Guardian Ape, then retrieve the Lotus of the Palace. The lotus is in a cave behind the Sunken Valley > Guardian Ape’s Watering Hole Sculptor’s Idol — the idol that unlocks after you beat the Guardian Ape.
  2. Defeat the Corrupted Monk in Mibu Village. Continue to the Wedding Cave just past the Ashina Depths > Wedding Cave Door Sculptor’s Idol, and pick up the Shelter Stone.
  3. Defeat the Folding Screen Monkeys in the Hall of Illusion. After that fight, you’ll be transported to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Inner Sanctum where the Child of Rejuvenation will give you the Mortal Blade.
  4. Return to Ashina Castle. Once you have these three items, most of the Sculptor’s Idols will be inactive. Fight your way from the Ashina Castle > Abandoned Dungeon Entranceback to the top of the castle.
  5. There, you’ll see a cutscene between OwlandLord Kuro. When you approach Owl, he’ll give you a choice: “Obey the Iron Code, forsake Kuro”or “Break the Iron Code, stay loyal to Kuro.”
  6. Choosing to obeyto the Iron Code will lock you out of the other endings. You have a couple more boss fights ahead of you that are exclusive to this ending, and then you’ll receive the One Mind skill.

IMMORTAL SEVERANCE ENDING

This is the basic “good” ending. Instead of siding with Owl in step 5 above, choose to stay loyal to Lord Kuro. From here, you’ll have to complete (most of) the rest of the game. This ending doesn’t require you to collect any extra items. You only need the Divine Dragon’s Tears.

  1. Follow the steps for the Shura ending above up until Owl gives you the choice. Choose to stay loyal to Kuro.
  2. Defeat Great Shinobi – Owl in Ashina Castle.
  3. Continue through the rest of the game. Defeat the Corrupted Monk in the Fountainhead Palace, then face the Divine Dragon. Retrieve the Divine Dragon’s Tears.
  4. Fight your way out of Ashina Castle, then go meet Lord Kuro back where the whole game started.
  5. Defeat the final boss, then give Lord Kuro the Divine Dragon’s Tears to end the game.

PURIFICATION ENDING

The next ending is similar to the Immortal Severance ending, but you’re going to mix a little extra with the Divine Dragon’s Tears before you hand them over. Picking up that item requires a bit of work.

  1. Follow the steps for the Shura ending above up until Owl gives you the choice. Choose to stay loyal to Kuro.
  2. Defeat Great Shinobi – Owl in Ashina Castle.
  3. When you get down into the castle at the Ashina Castle > Upper Tower — Kuro’s Room Sculptor’s Idol, talk to Kuro and Emma until they run out of dialogue.
  4. Go behind the wall ahead of Kuro, and eavesdrop on him. You may have to keep resting at the idol and eavesdropping until Emma moves to the top of the nearby staircase.
  5. Talk to Emma and agree with her about Lord Kuro.
  6. Rest, then talk to Emma again.
  7. She’ll move to the Ashina Castle > Old Grave Sculptor’s Idol to do some research. Follow her there and talk to her again.
  8. Go to the Ashina Outskirts > Dilapidated Temple Sculptor’s Idol. Loop around to the back of the temple and eavesdrop on Emma and the Sculptor through the hole in the wall.
  9. Enter the temple, and ask Emma about what you overheard and ask her what she’s hiding. She’ll give you the Father’s Bell Charm.
  10. Use the new charm at the Buddha statue inside the Dilapidated Temple. It will take you back to a different version of the Hirata Estate. (You’ll have to have defeated Lady Butterfly first.)
  11. Defeat Owl (Father) to receive the Aromatic Flower.
  12. Continue through the rest of the game. Defeat the Corrupted Monk in the Fountainhead Palace, then face the Divine Dragon. Retrieve the Divine Dragon’s Tears.
  13. Fight your way out of Ashina Castle, then go meet Lord Kuro back where the whole game started.
  14. Defeat the final boss, then give Lord Kuro the Divine Dragon’s Tears and Everblossom to end the game.

DRAGON’S HOMECOMING ENDING

The fourth ending is by far the most complicated. There are a lot of steps and a couple of side quests involved, so we’ll break it into sections.

THE CHILD OF REJUVENATION

  1. If you have not yet faced Genichiro Ashina in Ashina Castle — your first fight at the top of the castle — speak to the old woman praying on the bridge next to the Ashina Castle > Ashina Castle Sculptor’s Idol. Then, head all the way through Senpou Temple to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Main Hall Sculptor’s Idol. Speak to the old man there to receive the Holy Chapter: Infested.
  2. If you have defeated Genichiro Ashina, you’ll find the Holy Chapter: Infested at the bottom of the pond near the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Temple Grounds Sculptor’s Idol. You’ll need to pick up the Mibu Breathing Techniqueby defeating the Corrupted Monk in Mibu Village to be able to reach it.
  3. After you defeat the Folding Screen Monkeys and travel to the Inner Sanctum, give the Holy Chapter: Infested to the Child of Rejuvenation. Pick up the Mortal Blade while you’re here.
  4. Follow the other steps for the Shura ending above until you get to Owl’s choice at the top of Ashina Castle. Stay loyal to Kuro.
  5. Defeat Great Shinobi – Owl in Ashina Castle.
  6. Return to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Inner Sanctum and get some Ricefrom the Child of Rejuvenation. Use it on yourself or give some to the old woman at the temple. Leave, then return and get some more Rice. Keep repeating this until the Child of Rejuvenation goes to sleep.
  7. Visit her again, and she’ll tell you she’s not feeling well. Talk to her until she asks for a Persimmon. If you have one, you can give it to her right away. Otherwise, go pick one up from the Memorial Mobnear the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Shugendo Sculptor’s Idol.
  8. She’ll give you Rice for Kuro. Take that to Lord Kuro in Ashina Castle.
  9. Rest at the Ashina Castle > Upper Tower — Kuro’s Room Sculptor’s Idol, then talk to Lord Kuro again.
  10. Eat the Sweet Rice Ballhe gives you.
  11. Return to the Inner Sanctum and talk to the Child of Rejuvenation again. She’ll move to the Halls of Illusion where you fought the Folding Screen Monkeys earlier. Talk to her there — she’s near the large tree in the middle — and she’ll tell you to find a High Monk.
  12. Head to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Main Hall Sculptor’s Idoland head out the side door (facing the table and statue in the Main Hall, you’re heading left). Follow the tunnel there to the end, and look for the corpse of a monk wearing blue robes. Pick up the Holy Chapter: Dragon’s Return from his body.
  13. Rest at an idol, then take this new Holy Chapter to the Child of Rejuvenation. She’ll be back at the Inner Sanctum now.
  14. She’ll need two more “fruits” — parts from two different snakes. Each of those will take a little work, too.

FRESH SNAKE VISCERA

  1. Head to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo Sculptor’s Idol. Outside, head to the right. Drop down and sneak up behind the short Senpou Assassin near the kite crank. Stealth Deathblow him, then use Puppeteer Ninjitsu skill (that you learned when you defeated the Folding Screen Monkeys) on him. He’ll fly the kite for you.
  2. Head up the hill to the temple, past all the monks, and through the temple itself. Outside, where you gave the old woman rice, climb the huge tree there. Grapple to the kite and across the valley. Turn right, and follow the wall until you reach the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Sunken Valley Cavern Sculptor’s Idol.
  3. Head deeper into the cave and theSunken Valley Passage until you reach a pole sticking out over a huge drop.
  4. Look below you to see a Great Serpent. Jump off and deliver a plunging Deathblow on it to receive the Fresh Snake Viscera. That’s one down.

DRIED SNAKE VISCERA

  1. For the next viscera, you must have encountered another Great Serpent (the one from the Underbridge Valley) on the bridge near theSunken Valley > Gun Fort Sculptor’s Idol— right after the room where you fought Long-arm Centipede Giraffe. Once that bridge has been destroyed, head to the Sunken Valley > Bodhisattva Valley Sculptor’s Idol.
  2. Turn around — away from the Guardian Ape’s Watering Holeand head back up the valley. Watch for the Toxic Memorial Mob on your right. Head into the dark cave behind him and avoid the Giant Serpent there.
  3. Continue through until you spot a lone monkey. Use your Puppeteer Ninjitsu skillagain, and he’ll wander off to distract the Giant Serpent. You’ll find theDried Serpent Viscerain the house the Giant Serpent was blocking.
  4. Take both viscera to the Child of Rejuvenation in theInner Sanctum. Head out to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo > Inner Sanctum Sculptor’s Idoland rest. Eavesdrop at the closed door, then rest at the idol again.
  5. When the doors open again, talk to the Child of Rejuvenation one more time. She’ll give you the Frozen Tears item.

FINISH THE GAME

  1. Continue through the rest of the game. Defeat the Corrupted Monk in the Fountainhead Palace, then face the Divine Dragon. Retrieve the Divine Dragon’s Tears.
  2. Fight your way out of Ashina Castle, then go meet Lord Kuro back where the whole game started.
  3. Defeat the final boss, then give Lord Kuro the Dragon’s Tears and Frozen Tears to end the game.

THE FOUR ENDINGS AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS

In this section, we’ll give you the synopsis of each ending to help you decide which path to take.

SHURA ENDING

The first major choice you make — following Owl or staying loyal to Lord Kuro — is about the Divine Heir’s blood. Owl has been seduced by the Dragon’s Heritage. He wants the Divine Heir’s blood, and Lord Kuro doesn’t want him to have it.

What happens when you chose this ending.

If Wolf obeys his father, he sets off down a dark path that leads to some murders and, eventually, to Wolf becoming a Shura — a Demon of Hatred.

IMMORTAL SEVERANCE ENDING

If Wolf choses to remain loyal to Lord Kuro, the goal becomes to sever the Divine Heir’s immortality. The whole Dragon’s Heritage thing has led to a lot of suffering in the world, and Lord Kuro is ready for it stop.

There are a few ways to go about this, but they all involve giving Lord Kuro the Divine Dragon’s Tears.

What happens when you chose this ending.

In the most straightforward ending, Wolf hands over the Divine Dragon’s Tears, and then kills the Divine Heir, severing his immortality and fulfilling his wishes.

PURIFICATION ENDING

The other two Sekiro endings involve adding an item to the Divine Dragon’s Tears at the very end. With the Everblossom, Wolf ends the Divine Heir’s immortality.

What happens when you chose this ending.

Wolf then kills himself with the Mortal Blade, thereby killing the only remaining immortal. Lord Kuro gets to continue his life as a normal boy.

DRAGON’S HOMECOMING ENDING

Instead of the Everblossom, Wolf can collect Frozen Tears from the Child of Rejuvenation.

What happens when you chose this ending.

Handing these over with the Divine Dragon’s Tears doesn’t technically sever the Dragon’s Heritage. Instead, all those effected head to the west, returning the Dragon’s Blood to the birthplace of the Divine Dragon. This ending removes the temptation of the Dragon’s Heritage from the human world.
