A guide to beating and conquering Sea Of Thieves’ Ashen Lords.

1. Introduction

The “Ashen Winds” event is one of the many world events in Sea Of Thieves, indicated by a “Ashen Winds Cloud” (A big red and fire cloud/tornado in the sky). Arriving at the island will begin ominous music, setting foot on the island and you will see fire-y skeletons preforming a ritual with one of the Ashen Skeletons, who work for Flameheart. Defeating the Ashen Lord will drop copious amounts of loot.

Only 1 Ashen Winds event can be active at one time, as only world event can be active at once, the Ashen Winds event rotates with other world events.

2. A Guide to Battling the Ashen Lords

After sailing to the island and getting on to the island will cause an Ashen Lord to rise. At this point you will see which Ashen Lord you will be fighting (Captain Grimm, Warden Chi, Red Ruth, or Old Horatio), each have the same moveset & health. The only difference between the Ashen Lords is their apperance and voicelines.

The fight is split up into 3 parts:

PHASE 1:
In the first phase, in which the Ashen Lord has 2000 health, in this phase the Ashen Lord is less aggressive than in other phases, mainly spamming a melee attack and boulder throw, which I will explain later.

Once 2000 damage is done, the Ashen Lord will fall to their knees, in which the Ashen Lord can not attack, use this time to get your crew to slash the Ashen Lord with their cutlasses, the Ashen Lord will rise from the ground with more attacks and strength.

PHASE 2:
In the second phase, the Ashen Lord now has 3000 health, the Ashen Lords will begin using many new moves in this phase, so it is important that you know them all, all moves and their explanations will be explained in the next part.

Similar to the Phase 1, once 3000 damage is done, the Ashen Lord will fall to their knees to gain strength, and cannot deal damage, use this time to deal as much damage with your team, cutlass spamming will kill any skeletons spawned, just keep moving.

The lord gains access to this attack in the second phase, they will gather a lot of strength and pounds the ground in a fiery blast, this will send players in a huge distance flying into the air, the closer you are to the Ashen Lord, the more damage and knockback that’s done. If the ship is really close to the Ashen Lord, this can damage Masts, Capstan, Wheel, and the Hull.

PHASE 3:
In the final phase, the Ashen Lord again has 3000 health, now the Ashen Lord has access to all their abilities, including their strongest and best move, “World’s End”, at this point the Lord will kneel to the ground and summon a large volcanic eruption which can deal insane amounts of damage to the player, attacking the Ashen Lord while in this position is extremely risky, Geysers also summon, adding an extra way to take damage, often times this ability kills players instantly. If you get set on fire, don’t stay in the water for long as it begins to boil, cause the player to take damage. This attack can hit nearby ships as well, the range of the volcanic eruption is not as large as a regular volcano, which causes the rocks to have an extremely high chance of hitting the player. You should always stay in motion trying to dodge the attacks, and continuing to damage the Ashen Lord after the attack is finished.

Once 3000 damage is done, the Ashen Lord will be vanquished, and Geysers will once again appear, this time bringing up loot from the ground scattering everywhere around the island.

This attack can hit nearby ships as well, the range of the volcanic eruption is not as large as a regular volcano, which causes the rocks to have an extremely high chance of hitting the player. 6. Final Notes/Tips

Tips for the fight:

  • Ashen Lords are able to do massive damage to the boat, since Ashen Lords normally spawn near large bodies of water, so anchor your boat far into the water, so the boat cannot take damage.
  • In the later waves, blunderbuss and Eye of Reach are the best weapons, but make sure you have a cutlass for the earlier waves, when the Ashen Lords falls down.
  • The lords can take massive damage from Gunpowder Barrels, be careful as many abilties can make those barrels explode way before you do damage.
  • Fire does not do damage to the Ashen Lords.
