NOTE: Changed from one year to two years
This guide focuses on the raids your colony will encounter your first two years and how to counter them. On Cassandra, Merciless, Permadeath.
Dealing With Your First Tough Raid
Phase 1) Raiders look for loot. Can’t find loot? Next phase->
Phase 2) Raiders come to kidnap colonist. Colonist Can’t be found. Next phase->
Phase 3) Raiders burn crops and hit random player made structures.
When Raiders go into phase 3 that’s when you start firing at them in a safe position (enclosed building). Since they’re performing an action (Burning crops / beating walls) their reaction shot will be delayed.
At a certain point a raider or two will come knocking on your door for retaliation. Wait until there’s only one raider close to that door and then ambush them with a melee unit first (So they can’t shot you in the face) then have the rest of your squad fire their bows until the raider is down.
Repeat process
Bows and clubs vs gunpowder weaponry
Their rifles, shotguns, heavy smg’s and frag grenades don’t matter if they physically can’t use them. One colonist got shot with a shotgun in the arm due to bad timing on my end.
Dealing With Raids Example Two
Don’t chase raiders, allow the raiders to separate. It’ll make your life easier when trying to kill them as seen below.
This raider got isolated, then ambushed by the colonist once the door opened. Close the door after the raider is dead and Let this process repeat.
Infestations Year One Example
Infestation spawns in. In general a mountain base should have corridors to keep infestations contained.
By now your colonist should have decent quality Steel Plate Armor and Melee Weapons and Frag grenades. Your setup should look like this.
Don’t go after the insects. Play defensively, let them come after you. Let three colonist hit one megaspider while one megaspider can only hit one of you. While you’re most likely going to stun him anyways (Blunt melee weapons) and your armor should help a ton.
The colonist suffered minor injuries in this thanks to
armor
AOE damage from grenades
blunt melee weapons stunning the megaspiders
Only allowing one megaspider to engage my 3 colonist at a time.
Infestation Year Two Example
Infestation spawned in my stockpile room, which means I have to be careful with my grenades.
Dealing With A Early Game Mech Cluster
You need three things to deal with an early game mech cluster.
1) A Smokepop Belt 3/3
2) Frag Grenades
3) One Colonist
Turrets will not fire at you due to smoke, so it’s completely safe to deal with this threat so long you have smoke and frag grenades.
S*rip Armor
Stripping armor from live raiders allows your colonist to engage future raids without the tainted mood debuff.
The Colony
Over a year’s worth of progress. Everyone’s base is expected to look different in some way or form. As long as it has a killbox by the end of the year it’s good to go.
Mostly a shotgun defensive killbox with one melee colonist used as a distraction by the inmate cells.
