In this short guide, it there a schema of how to makes automation work with 2 smart battery as if it was a heavy smart battery at 40 Kj. It makes a XNOR existing.
In advanced game (3rd tier of science)
Is there 2 pictures to show you how to deal with 20 Kj smart battery as a 40 Kj battery
(automation view, by Angpaur – [steamcommunity.com] )

Electricity effect
(Electricity view)
In these pictures, the smart battery at right will charge first, when done, second battery at left will charge. When both are full, generators will turn off and first smart battery at right will start to supply electricity and to empty, when empty, second at left will supply electricity. When both are empty, generators will start to charge up.
Any of no managed electricity supply like manual or solar panel will not affect the system, it can only make generators be off for a longer time.
With this system, if all Heavy Batteries are empty, generators will start to charge them until they reach close to 40 Kj (they can lost 2% charge every cycle).
