(broken) Walkthrough to get No Man’s Sky to detect gamepad
(leaving this up in case it works for you. Latest patch broke this method. Controllers no longer detected this way. I find they don’t want you to use a controller on steam for some reason. And can google it, its been a growing problem for years and they “fix” every method to use a controller)
Open Steam big picture mode -> Click the setting icon in the upper right -> Make sure “Playstation/Xbox configuration support” is checked depending on what gamepad you are using -> Go to your library and click “No Man’s Sky” -> Click “Manage Game” -> Click “Controller options” and set the Steam input per game settings to “Global Settings” or “Force On” and then click “OK” -> Click “Controller Configuration” and select “Browse Configs” at the bottom -> Under Recommended select “Official Configuration for No Man’s Sky” and apply and click done -> (You can exit Big Picture mode at this point) CLOSE STEAM AND THEN DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT THE GAMEPAD -> Open Steam and boot up the game as normal.
There is a way to do this while not in big picture mode, but this seemed easier to explain.
Hope this helps.
