A guide on how to change some of the dialog in the game.

Introduction

Have you finished the game and would like to replay it but you know it’s just the same dialog? Or perhaps, even though most of the spelling and grammar mistakes have been corrected in this version, a few have slipped through, or the English feels unnatural. Or you are just curious how the dialog system works.
 
 
Below you will find the process for how to modify various lines of dialog, based on my own experimentation and exploration of the game files. You can use it to either create your own dialog patch file, or drop a pre-made one in and use or tweak that.
 
 
DISCLAIMER:
 
This guide was written based on my experience of exploring the files of the game My Cute Roommate version 1.6.13ex on Steam. I am not the developer of the game and have no connections or contact with the developers.
 
 
CAUTION:
 
This is a guide for an 18-cert Adult game. Therefore I will be using adult language in this guide where relevant. Due to Steam language filtering, I have altered some words slightly, for example: fu_ck. You will need to update the files below to use the correct form of the words, so that they match the dialog already stored in the game.
 
 
These dialog patch files are entirely optional. If you are offended by their contents then either don’t use them, or edit / remove the lines in your own file.
 
 
If you find that the game won’t launch and you can’t fix it, then deleting the patch files should be enough to restore the original game dialog. If the game still won’t start, it should be possible to restore it by letting Steam verify the integrity of game files or by reinstalling the game. I don’t know if Steam allows us to make changes like this – I view it as a personal mod for my own amus*ment and I am limiting my changes purely to dialog strings. I am not making any money from this, nor will I be held liable for any damages you incur by using this information.

How to Edit the Dialog

Game files are provided as text .rpy files.
 
When the game starts, these files are compiled and converted into binary .rpyc files.
 
At game start, the dialog files are read and the dialog strings are stored within the game.
 
It is possible to modify these stored dialog strings during the game start, by creating a patch .rpy file within the game directory.
 
 
Do not make changes while the game is running. Exit the game fully.
 
Create a new .rpy file (example MCR-dialog-patch.rpy) in your Steam library in directory:
 
..\steamapps\common\My Cute Roommate\game
 
 
Paste in the contents of the MCR sample file below and save.
 
 
The patch file contains a list of some of the stored strings in the game and the new strings that you want to use.
 
All lines are in the format:
 
“x” : “y”,
 
Where x is the current stored dialog string and y is the new dialog string you want to use.
 
The last line should have no comma at the end.
 
You must not use tabs in this file, only spaces.
 
 
You should only have one patch .rpy file in your game directory. When making changes to your dialog patch file, you will need to remove both patch files (.rpy and .rpyc) from the game directory and start the game. This will reset it to the original dialog. Then stop the game and put the .rpy file back in with your new line like:
 
“x” : “z”,
 
 
The value of string x can be found by looking in the .rpy files in directory:
 
..\steamapps\common\My Cute Roommate\game\tl\english
 
a*suming you are using the English language. I’m sure it would also work with different languages.
 
These language .rpy files contain sets of 2 strings – always copy the second string.
 
Never make changes to these language files unless you know what you are doing.
 
 
Some strings contain references to variables or to commands. The ones I know are:
 

[kk]	your RM’s name
[gg]	your main character’s name
{w=1.0}	a short pause

These can be added to the new string even if they were not in the original string.
 
 
The sample file should show you very early in the start of a new game whether it is working or not. Plus there are a few more changes for later in the game.
 
If you have made a mistake with formatting, you’ll get an error screen at game start which should help debug the issue.
 
Note that when you change the value of a stored string, you are changing it in all places where that string is used. So be careful if you choose to change a very common string.
 
 
it’s not an exact science. Sometimes the game ignores my changes or reverts to the original string. This mainly occurs when the dialog is stored in multiple places in the language files and I have copied the wrong one. The files I include below have been tested and should work.

MCC [Part 1/3]

The original version of this game was called My Cute Cousin (MCC). The developer had to change the name when he tried to host it on Patreon and so it became My Cute Roommate. You can still see references to cousin in the filenames like cous, cuz, kuzina.
 
 
The purpose of this dialog patch was to restore the original intention of this game by changing words from “roommate” to “cousin” and modifying various dialogs. In the below file, I have updated it to use the dialogs in the Steam version, removed and modified a few lines and also added a few of my own.
 
 
Due to Steam limits on section character lengths, I have had to split this file into multiple parts. Combine all into one file and put it in the game directory as usual. You should only use one dialog patch .rpy file.

Next?

I have a longer file based on MCC where it changes the main character to a university tutor so he can be any adult age compared to his cousin. It also makes large changes to the dialog during the first RM photoshoot at home and shows how to edit the dialog prompts in the game.
