This guide will tell you what to get, where to get it, and what it can roll. There’s a ton of misinformation and misconceptions about how gear works, but hopefully this will help clear things up so you can focus on farming the right things in the right places to save yourself time and effort.

INTRODUCTION

Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021] - INTRODUCTION

The main purpose of this guide is to dispel the plethora of loot misinformation out there and educate everyone on what they can get and how to get it. Please note the information gathered here through testing and farming is the result of time invested by many players in the Avengers Science Table and Problem Squad discords, of which my contribution is only a very small part.

*DISCLAIMER* Any drop rates are an estimation based on a large PC sample size and may be tuned differently on the other platforms or changed at any time without being in patch notes. Also, take any gear recommendations with a grain of salt. I’ve tried to gauge the community consensus, but it’s always evolving and there’s a lot of personal preference. We encourage experimenting and adjusting to what works for you, especially as content starts to get harder.

The Avengers Science Table Spreadsheet has fairly up-to-date lists of all of the gear here (as well as a wealth of other useful information) so be sure to check it out.

** Now updated with Kate Bishop gear in bold! **

EXOTIC GEAR SETS

There are currently 4 exotic sets, 2 the same for all of the heroes (which I shall refer to as Universal Exotics) and 2 unique to each hero (which I shall refer to as Fixed Exotics).
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

The main differences between the two types is that the Universal Exotics (Storm/Hive) can roll any combination of 2 or 3 stats and some of the perks draw from a small pool of perks, where as the Fixed Exotics have fixed stats (other than the Defense slot – see below) and perks, with the only variance being in how high your stat rolls are (they can be as high as the Universal Exotics, but can be significantly lower sometimes as well).

Storm Universal Set

( Piece of the Storm )

Melee, Ranged (with Targeted/Adept Buff perk), and even some Defense slot pieces are currently Best-in-Slot for characters that use an elemental attack as their primary way of dealing damage (which is basically everyone but Hulk). The upside of farming for these pieces is that Rifts reward a legendary/epic/rare Melee or Ranged piece with Cosmic attack type if you don’t get an exotic (100% Mission Completion should always get you a Legendary).
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from any Tachyon Rift mission, any clear any challenge rating (likely ~5% drop rate for 100% mission completion and lower the lower your completion %)

Stat Combinations: Any combination of 2 or 3 stats (either 60/60 or 45/45/45 max roll at PL130)

Perks: Common perk of Tachyon Surge – a high chance on proc a 20 second buff that increases the actual damage (not just status bar damage as it’s worded) of all attacks flagged as one of the positive/negative elements by 50%

  • Melee – Tachyon Surge on Melee Crit, 1-2 attack element types (usually 2), 0-1 Potentiators (20% increased actual damage for attacks of a particular element)
  • Ranged – Tachyon Surge on Ranged Crit, 1-2 attack element types (usually 2), 0-1 Random Ranged 1st Perks (anything that normally rolls in the first spot on a random Ranged piece)
  • Defense – Tachyon Surge on either Parry or Evade, 2 of Potentiators/Cosmic Willpower Amplifier
  • Heroic – Tachyon Surge on Kill, 1 of Potentiators/Cosmic Leech Amplifier, 1 of Support/Assault/Ultimate Heroic Charge

Hivemind Universal Set

( Hivemind Piece )

Because the JARVIS buff it gives is so long, it’s probably better in a slot that procs less (Defense or whatever you use less of Melee/Ranged) and with the current content survivability is not a big issue for most people so how good these pieces are is a lot of personal preference. If you die ever, these are amazing. If you never die they might not do much for you.
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from clearing Heroic Gauntlet 8 (aka Mega Hive), any challenge rating any mission completion %, 100% drop rate doable once/week, drops for the hero that finishes the mission

Stat Combinations: any combination of 2 or 3 stats (either 60/60 or 45/45/45 max roll at PL130)

Perks: Common perk of JARVIS Barrier – a moderate chance to proc a 60 second damage shield equal to 20% of your max willpower

  • Melee – 0-1 JARVIS Barrier on Melee Crit (usually 1), 1-2 attack element types (usually 2), 0-1 of Potentiators (20% increased actual damage for attacks of a particular element), 0-1 of Status Bar Damage
  • Ranged – 0-1 JARVIS Barrier on Ranged Crit (usually 1), 2 attack element types, 0-1 Potentiators
  • Defense – 0-1 JARVIS Barrier on either Parry or Evade, 2-3 of Evade Distance/Evade Protection Duration/Supression Recovery Chance/Parry Debuff Duration/Parry Debuff Extra Damage Taken
  • Heroic – 0-1 JARVIS Barrier on Kill, 2-3 of Cosmic Leech Amplifier/Support or Assault or Ultimate Heroic Charge/SPIN Resistance/Parry Debuff Less Impact Resistance

Mega Hive Fixed Set

( Alias Piece / Piece of the Super Soldier / Planet Cracker Piece / Centurion Mark XV Piece / Stormranger Piece / Piece of Asgard’s Scion / Provacateur’s Piece )

There are some cool unique perks, but the majority of them are either mediocre or totally useless. When you combine that with fixed stats it makes a lot of them a worse choice than a random Legendary with the perks and stats you want.

Stat Combinations:

  • Melee – Might, Proficiency (60/60 max roll at PL130)
  • Ranged – Precision, Proficiency (60/60 max roll at PL130)
  • Defense – 2 or 3 of Resolve, Resilience, Proficiency (either 60/60 or 45/45/45 max roll at PL130)
  • Heroic – Might, Proficiency (60/60 max roll at PL130)

Perks: Unique to each character (most of which can only be found on these pieces or on the equivalent Legendary version of the set) and are the same every drop (other than different elemental attacks).

Elite Heroic Hive Fixed Set

( Red Room Piece / Piece of the Nomad / Worldbreaker Piece / Superior Mark XV Piece / Marvelous Piece / Piece of the Thunderer / Hawbird’s Piece )

Similar to the Mega Hive Set this set is pretty hit or miss with its perks.
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from clearing Last Avenger Standing (aka Elite Heroic Hive), any clear any challenge rating (with 100% mission completion ~25% drop rate -maybe higher- since last patch on PC, might still be ~5% as it was previously on other platforms and, of course lower, the lower your completion %), drops for the hero that finishes the mission

LEGENDARY GEAR SETS

Special Legendary gear as a whole is usually referred to as “Named Legendary” gear to distinguish it from completely random Legendary gear. Random gear always uses the name of the 1st Perk it has in its name, that’s an easy way to tell if you’re unsure. Similar to exotics, there are currently 4 Named Legendary sets, 1 the same for all of the heroes (which I shall refer to as Universal Legendaries) and 3 unique to each hero (which I shall refer to as Fixed Legendaries).
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Again, very similar to exotics, the main differences between the two types is that the Universal Legendaries can roll any combination of 2 or 3 stats and some of the perks draw from a small pool of perks, where as the Fixed Legendaries have fixed stats (other than the Defense slot – see below) and two fixed perks, with the only variance being in one random perk and how high your stat rolls are.

Ultimate / Ages Universal Set

( Ultimate Piece / Piece of Ages )

The Melee and Ranged pieces are not worth using, but Potentiator Perks are very strong so Defense and Heroic pieces are very useable.
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from clearing either Priority Mission, 100% drop rate for first clear per week per mission any challenge rating, unsure if it can drop after first clear (I would expect it to drop with a ~5% drop rate if it does)

Stat Combinations: any combination of 2 or 3 stats (either 55/55 or 42/42/42 max roll at PL130)

Perks: Each piece has a buff/benefit while doing Tachyon Rifts/Priority Missions/Cloning Labs Perk in the 3rd Perk slot.

  • Melee – 2 attack element types, 1 Tachyon Rifts/Priority Missions/Cloning Labs Perk
  • Ranged – 2 attack element types, 1 Tachyon Rifts/Priority Missions/Cloning Labs Perk
  • Defense – 1 random Defense 1st Perk, 1 of Potentiator/a CC Resist perk, 1 Tachyon Rifts/Priority Missions/Cloning Labs Perk
  • Heroic – 1 random Heroic 1st Perk, 1 of Potentiator/(Support/Assault/Ultimate) Heroic Charge, 1 Tachyon Rifts/Priority Missions/Cloning Labs Perk

Elite Hive Fixed Set

( Infiltrator Piece / Piece of the First Avenger / Monsterous Piece / Modular Mark VII Piece / Piece of the Saffa / Piece of the All-Father / Archer’s Piece )

There’s a piece or two for each hero that are interesting with some potentially pretty good ones depending on how you’re building your character.
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from clearing any Elite Hive, any clear any challenge rating (likely ~5% drop rate for 100% mission completion, possibly a lot higher but currently unconfirmed, and lower the lower your completion %)

Stat Combinations:

  • Melee – Might, Proficiency (55/55 max roll at PL130)
  • Ranged – Precision, Proficiency (55/55 max roll at PL130)
  • Defense – 2 or 3 of Resolve, Resilience, Proficiency (either 55/55 or 42/42/42 max roll at PL130)
  • Heroic – Might, Proficiency (55/55 max roll at PL130)

Perks: 1st Perk and 2nd Perk unique to each character with the 3rd Perk being a random 3rd Perk from the piece’s normal set of 3rd Perks. No equivalent Exotic set.

Elite Villain Fixed Set

( Alias Piece / Piece of the Super Soldier / Planet Cracker Piece / Centurion Mark XV Piece / Stormranger Piece / Piece of Asgard’s Scion / Agent’s Piece )

The Legendary version of the Mega Hive set (except for Kate). Since some 3rd perks on the Mega Hive Set pieces are bad, some of these are actually better than their Mega Hive counterparts. Also, the Melee pieces could be decent for someone that prefers to use both types of Elemental Melee attacks relatively equally if they roll with a useful random 3rd Perk.
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from clearing any Elite Villain Sector (different from the Daily Villain Sector!), any clear any challenge rating (seems like the drop rate is really high with a 100% mission clear at the moment)

Perks: 1st Perk and 2nd Perk unique to each character and the same as the Mega Hive Set perks with the 3rd Perk being a random 3rd Perk from the piece’s normal set of 3rd Perks (older ones only had two perks, they now all have three).

Elite Vault Set

( Red Room Piece / Piece of the Nomad / Worldbreaker Piece / Superior Mark XV Piece / Marvelous Piece / Piece of the Thunderer / Hawkette’s Piece )

The Legendary version of the Elite Heroic Hive set. Since some 3rd perks on the EHH Set pieces are bad, some of these are actually better than their EHH counterparts. Also like the Villain set, the Melee pieces could be decent for someone that prefers to use both types of Elemental Melee attacks relatively equally if they roll with a useful random 3rd Perk.

Note: Since Ms. Marvel’s EHH loot currently seems not to be able to drop, this is the best way to get BiS level gear for her Defense and Heroic slots.
Marvel's Avengers - Locations for All Loots in Game [2021]

Drops From: Mission reward from clearing any Elite Vault, any clear any challenge rating (seems like the drop rate is really high with a 100% mission clear at the moment)

Perks: 1st Perk and 2nd Perk unique to each character and the same as the Elite Heroic Hive Set perks with the 3rd Perk being a random 3rd Perk from the piece’s normal set of 3rd Perks (older ones only had two perks, they now all have three).

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATIONS

Epic Gear Sets

There are less than full sets of “Named Epic” pieces that are a 100% drop rate mission reward from the Daily Villain Sector Faction Missions, but most of them aren’t worth using since they have set stats with lower max rolls (50/50 or 40/40/40). They all have 1 unique 1st Perk with a random 2nd Perk and 3rd Perk from the piece’s normal perks.

What stats are good?

In general Precision/Might (Ranged/Melee) > Valor >>>>> Proficiency for doing damage with attacks (you get a lot of Crit from skills and buffs) and Valor >> Precision/Might for doing damage with Heroics. Intensity is really good to ~65 points, after that the diminishing returns are steep, so try not to run multiple intensity pieces. It helps you activate the battery effect (full status of both a positive and negative element on an enemy) to doubles your damage. For defense, Resolve >>> Resilience at least until you have around 240 Resolve (which is almost no one), so in general Proficiency/Resilience/ (multiple pieces of) Intensity are bad. Now if you need crits badly for a build and can’t find a good way to keep the Damage Buff up Proficiency is useful, and a 3 stat piece with Resolve and Resilience is usually tankier than a 2 stat piece with just Resolve, so they aren’t useless.

Are Ratings useful?

Defense Rating is absolutely useful. It won’t account for situational damage reduction, but that aside it represents your Effective Health (EH/14). If you have a lot of situational damage reduction then widens an already large gap in how much better Resolve is vs Resilience. So don’t let anyone tell you that you having some resilience is better. When our stats are higher it will be (when you have 240 Resolve, which is currently overkill even to feel tanky), but not yet.

Melee/Ranged Ratings are your average hit with criticals factored in. While not useless there’s so many things they can’t factor in (the many crit/damage bonuses from skills/abilities/buffs) that they’re only useful as a ballpark indicator (e.g. it would be nearly impossible for 2000 rating to out DPS 3000, but 2400 with the right buffs might).

Heroic Rating is useful because Valor is by far the main thing that increases it (if not the only thing), so the more of it you have the harder your Heroics will hit.

What do the Damage/Defense Buffs do?

The Damage Buff gives you a 60% damage increase and increases your stat page Crit% to an even 40% (eliminating any benefit from Proficiency for the duration). This makes it the best DPS buff in the game, so have it up consistently on any DPS build. The Defense Buff increases your stat page Damage Reduction % to an even 60% (eliminating any benefit from Resilience for the duration).

Which Elements can you get on Melee and Ranged pieces?

Only certain Elements can roll on Melee and Ranged slots for each character. Cap has no way to get Plasma or Shock, Hulk has no way to get Cryo or Shock, and Ms. Marvel and Thor have no way to get Plasma. Consult the chart on the Science Table Spreadsheet for a breakdown between Melee and Ranged pieces.

Note: Potentiator Perks can roll for ANY Element on ANY character, meaning yes, some are totally useless sadly.

GENERAL BUILD TIPS & FINAL THOUGHTS

Here are some fairly universal tips:

  • Max your Damage Buff uptime (recommended ways to proc it are off of Ranged Crits/Weakpoint Attacks for ranged characters and off of Melee Crits/Preferred Combo Finisher for melee characters). BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR DPS!
  • Use your secondary ways to proc (the Melee/Ranged way you aren’t already using for Damage Buff, Slot3 on Evade/Parry/Damage Taken, Slot4 on 16 Hits Without Taking Damage/3 Rapid Kills, Slot4 on Takedown/Kill, Slot2 on Ranged Crit Kill/Ranged Weakpoint Kill) Tachyon Surge for insane damage (except on Hulk) and JARVIS Barrier for insane survivability. Use whatever fits your playstyle the best.
  • Try and get Precision/Might, Valor, Resolve on all gear (one with Intensity instead of Resolve).
  • Use ISO’s to adjust your stats to your liking (ideally you want to have multiple triple stat ISO’s of Precision/Might, Valor, and Resolve each with perks that you’ll use – check the faction vendors every day)
  • Mix in perks from Exotics or Named Legendaries that improve whatever you’re doing most of your damage with.

I will try to keep this updated as new gear and characters come out.
