AI voice mod wih Blue Archive characters.

Introduction

This mod replaces the voices of the main survivors with characters from Blue Archive. The current release includes 3 characters from Make-Up Work Club, Mika.

Installation

Voice files

1. Unzip the mod file into the root of the folder in your game. There should be a folder called “makeup_voice_mod”, in your addons directory.

2. Open the text file in left4dead2\gameinfo.txt.

3. Add “Game left4dead2\addons\makeup_voice_mod” at the top of your search paths. It should look like this:

You can easily access the game’s folder by navigating to your Steam library -> right-click on the game inside the list and select Manage -> Browse local files.

Sound cache

If the mod is not working, you can create the sound cache. These are the stepsto follow:

1. You can enable the Developer Console by selecting Keyboard/Mouse in the menu.

2. Open the console by pressing the key.

3. Enter this command: “snd_buildsoundcachefordirectory addons\makeup_voice_mod”

The game will freeze for a few minutes. Wait until the console comes back up. To test the mod quickly, enter this command:

“play player\survivor\voice\coach\adrenaline01”

Mika’s voice is likely to be heard. If you aren’t hearing Mika’s voice, restart the game and start it again.

Known Issues

Characters can speak simultaneously

The official voice lines in the game have a duration and time. This mod replaces them with completely new ones. It’s not uncommon for the lines to overlap (some or all) at times.

The voices of the characters sound strange or bad

That’s normal. It’s an AI model limitation and the limitations of training data. It can only be able to mimic human emotions and sometimes, text is not enough to tell whether a character is meant to be happy, sad or screaming at you So it’s no wonder that they talk as if they were in an elevator while in the middle of killing zombies. There are many lines and it is impossible to fix every single one. Consider this as a benefit of AI voices.

Voices are distorted

You may have to go back to the previous point or generate the sound cache once again. It is normal for these voices to have noise and artifacts due to being AI generated.

For my work, this required many steps from cleaning and preparing the quotes to training and using the AI model to generate the voices, all with many small programs that I created. The process took between 50 and 60 hours to make and it was certainly not an easy job, even when everything is technically accessible.

Unfortunately I do not have 3D models. The charm of this game is its ability to watch your favorite characters appear on the screen. Additionally, I’d need more work to fine-tune each voice of the AI model and that’s a different task.
