step-by-step guide on how to defeat the ‘ERROR: Patch notes unavailable’ boss when starting Krater for the first time

1. Problem: stuck on patch notes screen; ‘ok’ button doesn’t work.

Ok: you purchased Krater and want to play it for some reason. You start the game up for the first time and you get the following screen:

And no matter how many times you click on the ‘ok’ box, you can’t get past this screen. So you alt-tab out or ctrl-alt-del and shut the game down. Start it up again and… Its this stupid patch notes screen again. It just does not want you to play the game.

As it turns out, there’s a weird issue dealing with how Krater handles screen resolution. For some reason, what you see on your screen doesn’t match up with what Krater should be showing you. There actually is an ‘ok’ button somewhere. It’s likely somewhere off screen so you can’t click it. But move your mouse to the ‘ok’ you see and nothing happens.

Its weird and dumb. Something Fatshark could easily fix and don’t for whatever reason.

Thankfully there’s a work around. Here’s what you need to do!

2. Fixing the Problem

Simplest solution: Get a refund. Seriously. A bug like this that won’t allow you to play the game is inexcusable and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. But if you -MUST- play Krater, here’s the work around:

To fix this we need to manually change the resolution.

Because we can’t do that in game, we need to manually change it in Krater’s config file.

AND HERE’S HOW WE DO THAT! (in Windows 10):

Step 1: Open your personal user folder. In the window that pops up, you should see tabs at the very top of the window. You want to click on the one that says ‘view’.

Step 2: Beneath these tabs on the right side should be a series of boxes. Check mark the one that says ‘Hidden items’.

Step 3: You should now see a hidden folder put there by the CIA. Krater’s config is in here, so open it and find and open the following folders:
ROAMING
FATSHARK
KRATER

Step 4: In the Krater folder, find the file user_settings.config. RIGHT click on it.

Step 5: In the drop down menu that appears, click on ‘open with’. In the new window that appears, click on notepad. If notepad is not listed, click on ‘more apps’ and find notepad or wordpad. Either one of these programs will work.

Step 6: Once you have the config file opened in notepad, find the following:

screen_resolution = [
####
####

change the top number to 800
change the lower number to 600

When you restart the game, the resolution will be so awful it will look like someone sneezed on your screen. The good news is you can now click on ‘ok’ when the patch notes appears and proceed to Krater’s main menu and play it. In fact the ‘ok’ button should work from now on if you ever wind up in the ‘patch notes’ screen ever again.

Obviously go into settings from the main menu and change the resolution to something better.

Enjoy the game(‘s soundtrack because Krater kinda sucks)!

3. Accessing Krater’s soundtrack because that’s why you bought the game

Krater actually comes with Krater’s soundtrack.

For free*!

Unfortunately the soundtrack isn’t a Steam soundtrack. Its located within Krater’s game folder. Which is located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Krater\Soundtrack

Enjoy!

(* with purchase of Krater)

4. Thank You (more like F you) Section & Notes

I’d like to sort of thank Krater’s discussion forum. But I don’t want to because no one’s provided a clear and concise guide on how to correct this issue and I was left to figure this out on my own. This bug has existed for many, many years and no one has provided a clear “do this” answer. The few that know how to fix it are, as usual, unhelpful and expect you to magically know what to do. “Oh! Just go into the game’s config file and change the resolution!”

Ok!

Um….

How?

You fathead.

I’d also like to NOT thank Fatshark. You know this bug exists and instead of fixing it, you pinned a topic in the game’s forum that does not contain a solution.

NOTICE:

Krater evidently still has lots of bugs and has lots of issues Fatshark has never fixed and likely never will and they’ve resorted to the ever unhelpful ‘pin a post outlining bugs with workarounds’ and ‘expect the community to do Q&A for us’ which doesn’t really help anybody. Kind of contradicts the lyric in Fabrikerna that Sweden was ‘ruled by a tribe of diligent workers and fearless warriors’

That being said, if there are other common problems with Krater users are having, tell me and I’ll add them to this guide and it might wind up turning into a general troubleshooting guide.

This ‘can’t click on ok’ issue is almost universal. I installed the game today 6/09/21 after not playing Krater in years and ran into this bug immediately. And I’m learning that this retarded bug has existed @5 years and easily could have been fixed by now. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ embarrassing and inexcusable.
