How to achieve the Human Fall Flat “Speedrun” achievement, with the least effort and in the shortest time possible.

Abstract

A new method for obtaining the “Speedrun” achievement was discovered.
Providing the player has completed the levels previously, they may skip from “Mansion” to the end of “Snowy Mansion” instantly using the console command “level 12 3”.
Subsequently concluding the level is sufficient to award the achievement. (Working as of 13/1/21.)

Introduction

Human Fall Flat is a popular loosely-physics-based video game.

Among its many achievements, “Speedrun” can be the most time-consuming to obtain, due to its requirement to play all the initial levels in one gameplay session. Specifically, these are the levels “Mansion”, up to and including “Ice” (and the subsequent snowy Mansion variant).

In this paper, I will present a new method to trivially obtain the “Speedrun” achievement that requires negligible time and effort.

Method

Prerequisites:

  • You must have previously completed the levels “Mansion” and the snowy variant of Mansion that follows “Ice”.
  • You must know which keyboard button opens the in-game console (it’s this one ¬).

Then follow the steps:

  1. Begin a new singleplayer game on “Mansion” (either by Level Select or Begin New Game).
  2. Enter “level 12 3” in the console. This will take you to snowy Mansion. (Fig. 1.)
  3. Open the final door and fall through.

Congratulations! The achievement should be awarded as the credits level loads.

Discussion

The console command “level <LEVEL NO.> <CHECKPOINT NO.>” allows the user to teleport to any checkpoint of a map that the user has previously cleared. (Note that the command may only be used in singleplayer games, and for maps cleared by the user on their own singleplayer.)

This is useful for achievement hunting, as it can be used to travel directly to the checkpoint preceeding a tricky achievement without invalidating the attempt.

To the author’s knowledge, it was not previously realised that this could also be used to “cheat” the Speedrun achievement. Presumably, the type of level loading used by this command does not interrupt what the game considers a single play session, and the achievement itself was not designed with countermeasures for this sort of trick (such as checking each level is completed in turn, rather than only the final one).

It could be hypothesised that the use of the “level” command may simplify other achievements, such as “Rollin'” or “Clockwork”, but developer documentation suggests at least some achievements cannot be cheated by certain commands. Hence, the proof of such is left as an exercise to the reader.

Conclusion

In conclusion, “Speedrun” may be speed run.

I would not be surprised if this is considered a bug and removed in a future patch, but for the time being (and for funding purposes) I consider it a legitimate, if unconventional, use of game mechanics.
