WARNING: Disabling a gameinstructor could have an adverse effect on custom maps that use the instructor to provide custom hints. Take care.

The instructor hints can prove very helpful when you are starting the campaign for the first time. (How do I arm a grenade? How do I activate burst fire?).). This guide will explain how to disable or enable the instructor. Some custom maps may use the instructor to send custom messages. I remind creators that this is something they should be aware of. If you find this guide helpful, please include it in your workshop page.

This guide has 2 commands of interest:

gameinstructor_enable

sv_gameinstructor_disable

The first one is more important than the second, which I will discuss in detail in the following sections.

Allowing the console to work

You will first need to right-click Half Life: Alyx from your Steam menu, and then click Properties.

Next, you will need to enable it by adding -console or -vconsole in your Launch Options

To launch the game, take off your headset and press the (key above Tab and below Esc on all keyboards).

Disable the Game Instructor

This is easy and requires that you change your Launch Options to ensure that Console access is not required. All you have to do is add +sv_gameinstructor_disable 1 like so (I still have the console settings in there because you might need it for other reasons…see my AI Disabled guide for another example):

Half-Life: Alyx - Enable/Disable Game Instructor Guide - Disabling the Game Instructor - 25E5A22

It's very simple.

The instructor will now be disabled every time you launch the game. If you want to change it back to active, change your launch option to +sv_gameinstructor_disable 0 and the next time you load he game it will be reactivated. Technically, this is only necessary once. However, it's a good idea to keep the launch option open so you know what settings have been implemented.

If you have +sv_gameinstructor_disable 0 set but still aren't seeing hints, it's likely a custom map or other change altered the gameinstructor_enable value. For more information, see the next section of this guide.

Allowing the Game Instructor

This is a great way to either re-enable the game instructor if it has been permanently disabled by you or a custommap, or if you're certain you don't want to see any gameinstructor messages (again. I still recommend the previous) method. On that Console screen type gameinstructor_enable and hit Enter to see what the current value is.

This shows that my instructor has been enabled. It shows 1 as its value. You can change it by entering either of these and hitting Enter.

gameinstructor_enable 1

Or

gameinstructor_enable 0

You can confirm that the setting took by simply typing gameinstructor_enable and hitting Enter one again to see the value. The console can then be closed (but not). You can then put on your headset and continue as normal.

All instructor message popups will be disabled if the value is set to 0 This will likely cause interference with custom maps that provide key information via instructor. I recommend the Launch Option method, which is simpler to add and subtract at your own pace. However, you can use whatever method works for you.
