This guide will help you to run Gothic on Steamdeck with working background music, cutscenes, and proper gamepad controls after you have completed it.

Setup in desktop mode

  1. Steam has made the Gothic beta version available to "workshop"
  2. Install the game
  3. Delete "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Gothic/system/SystemPack.ini" file (new default will be created by Union).
  4. Subscribe mods in Workshop: (You can also do this from your PC)

    You are welcome to try other mods.
  5. Install ProtonUpQt and protontricks directly from your terminal or desktop store:

    $ flatpak install net.davidotek.pupgui2

    $ flatpak install com.github.Matoking.protontricks
  6. Run the ProtonUpQt desktop app to install the latest ProtonGE (currently GE Proton7-31; default Proton 7.0, Experimental has a problem with symlinks, and step 9 would fail)).
  7. Restart Steam and in Gothic property set the compatibility tool for the downloaded Proton GE.
  8. Run the game to the mod launcher, and exit (to generate Proton prefix 65540)
  9. Install directmusic from terminal using protontricks

    $ flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 65540 directmusic
  10. Open "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/65540/pfx/user.reg" file in text editor:

    In the following section

    [Software\\Wine\\DllOverrides]

    Add this line

    "ddraw"="native,builtin"

    This allows DirectX 11 rendering.

    You can also delete

    "*dsound"="native"

    This fixes minor crackling and sound delay

    Save and Close.
  11. Run the game to launch modlauncher.

    – Deck UI allows you to set the gamepad scheme as an alternative to keyboard + mouse.

    DirectX 11 settings can be found in video settings, or you can press F11 at any time.

    – I recommend that you attach a monitor to the game to configure it. The DX 11 menu is too small for Deck screen, so make sure 1280×800 has been set.

    – Also there are various options in the "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Gothic/system/SystemPack.ini" file, which are not possible to configure in-game.

    In-game disable of the controller screen overlay

    – When exiting the game, you will be returned to mod launcher. You can kill it using steam menu. There is no close button.

Optional: To maximize battery life, set framerate limit to 40 and TDP up to 5W.
