For those new to For the King, Focus is a resource used during a campaign that allows you to shift the balance in your favour and tip the scales towards victory.
Spending one point of Focus allows you to guarantee yourself an extra roll on any skill or combat check, or add additional movement spaces on the overworld map.

There’s no set limit to the amount you can add to any roll, other than how much Focus remains; but always weigh all available options carefully before spending it in order to prevent yourself from being put in an impossible situation without divine intervention to assist.

As long as Focus can be restored, however, rest easy knowing it can be rebuilt – be it through meditation in town or camp, using golden roots like Golden Root, or unlocking Traits like Deep Thinker which grant full Focus restoration upon level-up.

Combat

As with For the King 1, our intention with FTK2 was for Focus to still have an impactful role. By adding new skills, spells, and the combat grid we aim to keep Focus just as pivotal while making things even more thrilling and intriguing!

All combat skills will grant you an opportunity to spend Focus. If your attack, spell, or skill could make or break this run then now is the time to use your Focus wisely! Whether that means making sure that your

Blacksmith can cast Taunt successfully to keep allies out of enemy sight or ensure your fighter can cast Stun to keep the enemies at bay.
Or that powerful area spell that could bring down an entire enemy lineup!

With just a little time in FTK2, you’ll quickly find that Focus can add layers to combat—especially when Focus used in combat might leave you hanging out to dry when you get into your next encounter and need just a little more of a push to cross the finish line.

Encounters

Each encounter spawns on the overworld has a stat associated with its skill check. From Strength and Speed to Intelligence and Talent, these stats will set the challenge—and your odds of victory.

However, even a blade that is very dull might be dangerous! You’ll get a roll that is sure to succeed if you use Focus.

You can add as many Focus points as you have if you’re under pressure. Focus can assist you in settling the score with the corrupt Queen and her entourage by offering you the opportunity to obtain additional wealth, allies, restoration, and other resources to aid in your battle, from disarming traps to making friends with the local fauna.

Movement

But Focus doesn’t stop providing benefits with just combat and encounters. While traveling on the overworld you can use Focus points to add movement to your counter.

It may seem like a waste when compared with a guaranteed hit or skill check victory, but you may find yourself just one hex away from the safety of a warm inn—or perhaps that Goblin just one hex away deserves vanquishing and one more round is simply too long to wait!

Using Focus for movement is a great way to close the gap on objectives too, especially when you’re racing against the clock with the Chaos meter.

Remember, Focus might not be finite, but it can be hard to restore it effectively depending on where you and your party find yourselves. In the deepest depths of a dungeon, you may not have a toasty Inn or camp to snuggle up in, so be warned and keep your wits about you!

Safe travels, Adventurers~
