⋆ Even if you’re familiar with the previous games in the Far Cry series, New Dawn adds some fresh systems and switches up familiar mechanics to keep the game-play fresh and to keep you on your toes.

Twelve Essential Tips

⋆ The tips below have all the advice you need to thrive in the post apocalypse.

1. Eden’s Fire mission for OP Weapon (Not Recommended)

⋆ Go straight to the island where Far Cry 5 ended (you’ll find it slap-bang in the middle of the map, at the bottom of the narrow section at the top). Once there you’ll get given an easy, trippy mission to find Joseph Seed’s book. Follow the cult leader’s instructions, then do the Eden’s Fire mission that’ll be automatically marked on your map afterwards. Doing the beginning section will get you access to a level 2 blue bow, which is incredibly overpowered early on in Far Cry New Dawn when you’re just taking on grey enemies which makes game way to easy.

2. Take out (or don’t) alarms at Outposts first

⋆ Before you run in and start slaying Highwaymen left and right, take this tip to heart: destroy all the alarms at the Outpost in question. You can tell where they are by looking out for pylons with bright green lights at the top, then just smash the yellow box with the green light at the bottom. On the other side, one of the reason you might not want to take out the alarms is if you want more enemies to shoot at. Since gun-play is so satisfying, this might be worth considering.

3. You have to unlock fast travel by upgrading Prosperity (Not Recommended)

⋆ Although you’ll always be able to fast travel back to Prosperity, you’ll need to upgrade the Expeditions facility to be able travel to liberated Outposts, and then upgrade it again to unlock fast travel to all discovered locations on the map. In all you’ll need 200 ethanol to get to this second (and most useful) stage, so start saving sharpish if you’re not fond of hiking which is a shame since the world is astonishing.

4. Get the Tactical Binoculars perk

⋆ As it involves eliminating every Highwayman currently chilling in the Outpost, and you get bonuses for remaining undetected or setting off no alarms, you’re going to want to know where every single Highwayman is to stop yourself being (literally) stabbed in the back. The tactical binoculars perk is indispensable for this, as hovering over enemies and alarms will tag them automatically, plus you can set waypoints through them too. It also saves you having to cart around Timber and hear his whimpers when he gets hurt/worry about his well-being in the middle of a gunfight.

5. Fall damage is no joke

⋆ If you fall early on in the game, be prepared to wave goodbye to a chunk of your health or just straight-up die. So, if you’re lazy like me and enjoy taking shortcuts down the side of mountains, get the Grapple and Skydiver perk. Each of them reduces fall damage, which your knees will most definitely thank you for.

6. Talk to friendly NPCs for quests and points of interest

⋆ When you’re wandering across the wild you’ll find NPCs with diamonds and blue exclamation marks above their heads. Have a quick natter and they’ll point you in the direction of something worth checking out.

7. Always bring bait when you’re hunting animals

⋆ Stumbling around the wild just hoping for a glimpse of a cougar, wolf, or boar is a tiresome affair. But if you bring some bait with you (which requires meat and Yucca, the orange plant) and chuck it down, you are guaranteed a wild animal appearance within a couple of seconds. Plus if you kill that animal you then have meat for the next lot of bait you need to craft, which you can use to lure another animal, and so on and so on…

8. If you see an animal carrying something in its mouth, follow it (from a distance)

⋆ Animals have dens in the game, and they’re much more than just a nifty environmental detail. Inside each den you’ve got a chance of finding a lootable bag or even sometimes a gun, but finding them can be tricky. So if you see a cougar or a wild dog carrying something in its mouth, instead of killing it follow it from a safe distance and it’ll lead you straight to its den.

9. Completing treasure hunts gets you in-game currency

⋆ Treasure hunts put your problem-solving skills to the test, but completing them gives you far more than just resources: you’ll also get 45 Credits for free, the in-game currency. Don’t spend them on outfits, though (however much you might want that unicorn hat). Instead, save them – yes, all of them – as you can then spend them on elite tier weapons. 400 – 600 credits can get you anything from a handgun to a unicorn flamethrower. Yeah, you read that right.

10. Expeditions will get you circuit boards, which you’ll need for the best weapons

⋆ Circuit boards are a bother to find as they’re the rarest material in the game. To get them either do Expeditions – which will get you 15 on Tier 1 difficulty – or kill Monstrous Bison and Monstrous Cougars to get their skins, which get you 10 each.

11. Use the Ubisoft Club to get free stuff

⋆ If you’re part of the Ubisoft Club you get a ton of free stuff just by signing up and spending coins you accumulate by playing any of their games. Go to the main menu and then select Ubisoft Club to see what stuff you can grab.

12. You can switch your ammo types and firing type in the weapons wheel

⋆ If you get incredibly frustrated when your SMG/assault rifle only fires in intermittent bursts, don’t worry you can change how your gun fires by bringing up the weapon wheel, hovering over your gun of choice, and pressing the corresponding key on your keyboard.

How to unlock Timber the dog

⋆ Timber the dog is the best if you want to be sneaky or hate searching for crafting materials – crafting is a big part of the game, so you’re going to want to loot every single plant, gear, and box of components you come across. To save you searching until your eyes bleed, spend some time with Timber who will tag and dig up crafting materials, making your life a whole lot easier.

⋆ Handily, Timber is one of the first of the Far Cry New Dawn best Guns for Hire you can unlock in the game (after Carmina of course). So if you want this furry four paws on your team, head over to the Meatfort, to the northeast of Prosperity, and just east of the Broken Forge outpost to trigger Timber’s quest (if you haven’t already triggered it by speaking to one of your scouts, which appear on your radar as blue squares with exclamation points inside).

How to unlock Horatio the boar

⋆ Horatio the boar may not be able to travel in vehicles with you due to his sheer size, but this absolute unit will bash his way through enemy shields and can go into full battering ram mode when suitably enraged. Sometimes a dog just won’t cut it. This sturdy little fellow excels in being quite the battering ram. He can knock shields from the enemy’s grasp, use his special Pig’s Endurance to get back on his feet when he’s downed, and even go full red flag and take down anything in his path. Handy, right? Well, if that appeals, here’s how to unlock Horatio the boar in Far Cry New Dawn.

⋆ In order to trigger Horatio’s quest, you can either keep speaking to your scouts – the ones with the blue exclamation mark icon above their heads – until they drop you a tip on the little piggy’s whereabouts, or you can head up to a place called Elsinore Farm, which is way to the north of Prosperity, just northwest of The Pantry outpost. Getting here will trigger the ‘To Love a Boar’ quest, which will introduce you to Horatio. He’s hidden inside a shed on the farm, protected by Highwaymen arguing about the fact they’ve lost the key to Horatio’s jail. You’ll need to take them all out and shoot the padlock on the shed to free Horatio and let him join the fight.

How to get Perk Points fast

⋆ If you want to get yourself some new abilities, from the essentials such as being able to carry multiple weapons at once, to useful items like a parachute or a wingsuit, then you’ll need Perk Points to unlock them.

1. Solve the Treasure Hunts on the map

⋆ Basically solving puzzles and finding hidden treasures. You can start these side missions at Prosperity.

2. Use as many of the Guns for Hire as possible

⋆ When each Gun for Hire achieves 15 kills on the battlefield, they’ll complete an in-game Challenge that rewards you with three perk points at once.

3. Work your way through the full Arsenal

⋆ The same goes for your weaponry. If you stick only for example to an LMG or two weapons of your choice, you will limit the number of Perk Points you can get. Instead, you can actually work your way through all the weapon types, across all four tiers of the weapons bench – rusty through golden and shiny – you’ll earn Perk Points for killing a set number of enemies with each one.

4. Keep your Hunting (and fishing) patterns varied

⋆ For each new critter you kill, skin, or simply just catch, you’ll tick off that species in the Challenges list. That means the moment you find something a different animal, you should take a moment to kill it dead – or catch it dead – in order to tick it off your Challenge list.

5. Start working your way through the rest of the Challenges

⋆ If you head to that very tab in your menu, you’ll find that there is quite the assortment of them to work through. Some are linked to weapons, outposts and Prosperity progression, but others are more unique like distracting enemies with rocks or getting kills from the helicopter in Expeditions, but ticking off each one will earn you more and more Perk Points, so make your way through them as best as you can.

How to earn Ethanol quickly

⋆ Ethanol is the most important resource you’ll encounter in the game, as it’s used to upgrade your homebase of Prosperity and give you access to better weapons, new weapons, and more.

⋆ As you can probably already tell, the best way to collect Ethanol is by liberating and scavenging (i.e. letting the Highwaymen recapture) Outposts, as doing so will upgrade that Outpost’s Star Rating each time, which in turn increases the amount of Ethanol you’ll receive for liberating and scavenging it again. Below is a list of every Ethanol yielding Outpost and how much of the liquid motor fuel you’ll receive for each one.

• Liberate a 0 Star Outpost – 100 Ethanol (+25 undetected bonus)
• Scavenge a 1 Star Outpost – 50 Ethanol
• Liberate a 1 Star Outpost – 200 Ethanol (+75 undetected bonus)
• Scavenge a 2 Star Outpost – 100 Ethanol
• Liberate a 2 Star Outpost – 300 Ethanol (+150 undetected bonus)
• Scavenge a 3 Star Outpost – 150 Ethanol
• Liberate a 3 Star outpost – 300 Ethanol (+150 undetected bonus)

⋆ Otherwise, Supply Drops provide you with quick (between 30 to 50 Ethanol), light doses of Ethanol when discovered across the map but.

⋆ Another way is commandeering Ethanol trucks and taking them back to Prosperity or a liberated Outpost for 75 Ethanol, but it is highly debatable if the effort is worth it, especially as there’s a likelihood it’ll be blown up by Highwaymen along the way – which adds more risk.

How to earn Circuit Boards quickly

⋆ Circuit Boards are the other useful commodity you’ll earn in game, and you’ll need them in order to craft high level weapons and vehicles. Basically, you can collect Circuit Boards by:

• hunting certain beasts and trading their skins or
• going on Expeditions from your homebase

• Trade a Monstrous Bison Skin – 10 Circuit Boards

⋆ The best and fastest way to collecting Circuit Boards, as the list shows, is by completing Expeditions. You’ll need Circuit Boards to craft almost any Third Tier or Elite Tier weapons, alongside a bunch of other crafting materials, so it’s a good idea to start thinking about the Circuit Board ground when you’re just under halfway through Far Cry New Dawn’s story. These weapons crafting requirements range from around 5 to 25 Circuit Boards each, with Elite Tier firearms costing the most. To make every weapon, then, you’ll need around 200 Circuit Boards in total.
