This guide will show you some simple architectural tips from real life that can be used in games as well. Over the years while building houses in games, I’ve researched different things I was curious about, so here’s what I’ve found. I hope these tips will help you as well. Also this guide was made using Fallout 76 as an example, but these tips could be used in any game that you can build houses in.

Tip #1 – Doors

If you’re ever unsure which way a door you’re placing should open, doors should always swing INWARDS in to the room/house you’re entering. And here’s why:

1. When you open a door it makes more sense to open it forward in the direction you’re going, rather than pulling it towards your face.

2. When a door swings inwards, the hinges are on the inside of the house. But if you pull the door to enter, and it opens outwards, then the hinges are on the outside. Meaning the hinges could be easily accessed by anyone standing outside your front door if you have an outward-swinging door. Which is a big safety risk.

So this is the way a door should open when entering a room or house:

The only exception to this rule, and the only time a door should swing outwards, is if the room you’re entering is too small for the door to swing inwards in to it. Some examples could be a closet or an outhouse. It’s logical for a door on either of those places to swing outwards rather than inwards on the already small space.

Tip #2 – Flooring

If you’re ever unsure which way your planks should run while placing a floor, they should always be running HORIZONTALLY. This is because when you enter a room, it looks weird if the flooring is going forward in the same direction you’re facing. There needs to be some contrast, so the planks have to go horizontally on the floor. This rule also applies to porch/deck planks.

Examples of correct flooring (from the view of the front of the house):

Tip #3 – Roofs

If you’re ever unsure which way a pointed, triangle roof should be facing, the roof should always be running horizontally. This is because if you’re standing in front of a house and looking at the roof, you should be able to see both the left and right side of the roof, not just one slope going upwards, like it would be if the roof was placed wrong. It looks more aesthetically pleasing when roofs run horizontally.

An example of a correctly placed roof:

Tip #4 – Fences

If you’re ever unsure about which side of a fence should be facing towards the street/away from the house, and which side should be on the inside of the enclosed area inside the fence:

The left side of the fence in this photo should ALWAYS be on the inside of the enclosed area inside of fencing. And the right side should always be on the outside of the fence.

So this is the side you should be looking at if youre standing outside of a fenced-in area:

Tip #5 – Windows

When placing windows in games, a good trick is to just not place any windows at all when first building the house. Just build the whole house, with all blank walls and no windows. Then after the house is down, go around it and replace certain walls with windows, where you think there would be a good view of the outside, etc. This way of placing windows is easier than deciding where to put them as you’re constructing the house.

Don’t put too many windows on your house. There should definitely be more walls than windows. But it’s ok to have 1-2 rooms full of windows, sometimes that looks great, just as long as it’s not consistent throughout the whole house.

If the view outside of a window is terrible, you might just wanna scrap it and replace it with a blank wall, then you can decorate the inside of the wall with shelves/etc. Windows are supposed to give a peek to the outside, so it’s best if there’s a good or at least decent view, and not a bad one. BUT at the same time, the view of the house from the street matters too. So make sure nothing is blocking your windows on the inside of the house. Put small shelves underneath windows, or things on either side of them, but never blocking it. Unless it’s sometimes like a christmas tree, that looks good in front of a window even though it’s somewhat blocking it.

Windows also look really good on decks or porches, like this:

Also, this part of the window should always be on the inside:

Closing Note

Besides all of those tips, when you’re building a house just make sure to NOT make a square. Build your house in a good shape, add dimensions to the outside of the house to make sure the walls aren’t completely flat, make every side/angle of the house look good.

When you build a house in a game the natural thing to do is just build a square of walls, but try to force yourself out of that habit when building ur next house. You might think that you have to build a house completely symmetrically, and it has to have the same length and width all over, but that’s how you end up building boring boxes for houses. It’s good to build them in unique shapes, while still using symmetry.

Good luck y’all 😀
