Everyone has a different approach to solve problems, for me understanding the idea behind Radahn was what made his fight a lot easier.

Starscourge Radahn.

The mightiest of the Demi-gods if people are to be believed.

A brutal warrior who nonetheless decided to master gravity in order to continue being able to ride his beloved mount despite the tremendous size discrepancy.

The design behind the gameplay.

Time to look, not at the character, but at the game’s designers, and what the are presenting us with.

Lets break it down:

  • Huge arena.
  • NPC summons are available, and respawnable.
  • Torrent is available*
  • Coop summons are available*

*as per the game’s mechanics, you can’t have both, so pick one.

Right off the bat this tells you Radahn is designed for area control with a mediocre (but still massively strong) moveset for dealing with a single horseless foe.

So the match begins and you begin summoning all the NPCs available, you jump into the fray and get battered around like a doll.

So what gives?

The pieces in the field.

How would you code a character that has so many opponents in the field? You give him attacks that cover wide areas.

Despite appearances every enemy in the game is fighting only one enemy.

So who is Radahn fighting here? If you coop you know the answer to that.

At the start he will only focus on the host, at this point Radahn is only aware of the host and no one else.

Now, good coops will rush towards Radahn to draw aggro, whoever gets close enough will now be his target.

So far so good.

But by now the host has summoned a bunch of NPCs who will mindlessly charge in and you don’t know what Radahn is doing.

Order from Chaos.

When the melee starts try to stay back a bit.

Despite appearances to the contrary, Radahn is fighting just one enemy and the damage received by others is just collateral.

For all his might and ferocity Radahn needs to pause constantly after each attack sequence, that is the function of the NPCs, to rile him up, and get him to tire himself out.

Let’s say he is doing his circle strafe runs, he will circle around like a shark at take swipes at whoever he is targeting, and God help whoever is running around inside his circle. At this time players should just depend on their stamina avoiding his attacks, once he finishes let whoever is behind him charge in with everything they have, everyone in front of him should get ready, because whoever was wailing on Radahn will now have his undivided attention meaning Radahn will begin a new attack sequence.

Another of his attacks that capitalizes on his mechanics is the gravity slam, he draws everyone into range of his area attacks.

Capitalize on it, you are now close to him so roll under him and listen carefully for the sounds of the NPCs hitting Radahn, one that sound starts Radahn will focus on them and since you are now under him you can do some damage for a few seconds before he tries to reposition.

Be aware, he does have one or two attacks that will target anyone under him or behind him, so don’t be greedy.

A host! A host! My kingdom for a host!

I get it, this is your fight but please remember that if the coop players die you still get to continue fighting, but if you as the host dies then everything was a waste.

Remember that the people you summoned may probably want to do the Radahn fight over and over with their new toys, if the fight starts and the summoned rush in then they probably know what to do.

Take your time and summon the NPCs, try to keep a good distance so you have time to dodge Radahn’s shots and outrun his rain of arrows.

One the melee with the NPCs start resist the urge to jump into the fray and wait for Radahn to tire after each attack then counterattack either behind him or right below him.

You can tank his attacks with a 100% shield and proper stamina management, just hold your shield up and when you get hit lower it so the stamina meter can fill up again.

Other than the initial bow and arrow salvos, the host has three more attacks to worry about that can end up one-shotting him.

The biggest party stopper is his Meteor Crash attack at the end of his first phase, as Radahn decends back down to the ground you can observe him adjusting his path meaning he is targeting a specific individual, whether this is based on aggro or other data (such as a proximity cluster) is anyone’s guess at this point, but it will likely kill the host.

His homing magic orbs track surprisingly well and have a good chance of killing the host.

His four meteors are similar to his orbs, but larger and stronger.

When Radahn draws out the orbs and meteors let the NPCs attack and deal with their damage, once they are launch proceed as usual.

Closing thoughts

I tend to avoid leveling up so I can help people with Radahn, but it does get frustrating when the host either doesn’t take cover or joins the NPC melee.

So keep these points in mind.

  • Don’t be greedy.
  • DO. NOT. BE. GREEDY!
  • Let the summons take the brunt of the damage, that is what they are there for.
  • Keep your eye out for the NPC’s respawn marks, you can summon them over and over again.
  • When in doubt, go for the groin.

Try applying Scarlet Rot grease to a weapon, though be careful as there is a limited quantity of them at that point in the story, and getting the recipe means going to an area that is unlocked after beating Radahn.

Hope my half-baked attempt at a guide helps.
