Hydrogen Leak Valve

One important feature of this layout is that we get rid of hydrogen external input lane, thus save a lot of space and make the automation more robust. 
 
To make it work, we need a hydrogen loop that outputs hydrogen ONLY when the amount of hydrogen in the loop is high enough (therefore we keep enough hydrogen as input for X-ray cracking). 
 
Input => LeakValve 
LeakValve => Output (always) 
LeakValve => Leak (Only when it’s too full)

Right now this setup is at 1/3 Output. 
IF input <= 1/3 full belt THEN all input goes to output 
IF input > 1/3 full belt THEN 1/3 full belt goes to output and the rest goes to the leak. 
 
There are different ways to set up the valve to achieve different thresholds, like 1/2, 1/4, etc…

NOTE: The LeakValve setting affects the max number of refineries you can put in the loop without any premature output. If you want to put 60 refineries (2 item/4 seconds for each), you may want to pick a smaller LeakValve value. 
 
UPDATE: Many people give me feedback that they don’t get the valve. 
Here is an simple one with 1/81 setup (small enough for a factory with 60 refineries)

To set 1/2^N LeakValve: 
(Loop end) Input => Splitter V (SV) 
SV => (Prioritize) Splitter 1 (S1) 
SV => Factory Output (the leak) 
S1 => S2 
S1 => side lane 
S2 => S3 
S2 => side lane 
… 
S_n => Output (Loop Start) 
S_n => side lane

Only 3 inserters needed

We run a Hydrogen and graphite (The picture mistakenly labeled it as graphene) mixed loop. 
X-ray refineries get the input from the middle oil lane and the mixed loop, while output to the mixed loop.

At the end of the loop, we should: 

  • Use a simple splitter to filter away graphite and output them. 
    LoopContent => Splitter 
    Splitter => (Filter) Graphite Output 
    Splitter => Next 
  • Now we run it (ONLY hydrogen left) into the Leak Valve mentioned. 
    LoopContent => Leak Valve 
    Leak Valve => Output to Start of the Loop 
    Leak Valve => Leak to the actual factory hydrogen output.

 
 
 
 

Don’t forget to “Start” it

Since we don’t have any hydrogen input lane, we need to manually “Start” the factory so that we have some H at the mixed loop. 
You can do this either by manually dropping a few hydrogen into the mixed loop, or manually drop a few into a refinery so that it will then output more. 
 
This only needs to be done once (better do it when you build it).
