DOOM Eternal – Restoring the game’s fun

1. What is this guide about?

When The Ancient Gods Part 2 DLC hit, id Software made drastic changes to the game’s difficulty that included lowering damage of all demons, slowing down the AI of all demons, including their attack speed, widening vulnerability windows on enemies like Marauder and Blood Maykr, and lowering the amount of demons that spawn in specific levels. As a result of this, the game in its’ current state is laughably easy even on Nightmare and is not fun because of it.

Thankfully, however, dedicated fans have created mods that restore the pre-TAG2 balance. These mods are free to download, easy to install, and will NOT get your account punished in any way!

2. Installing the mod launcher

First, download the DOOM Eternal Mod Injector from this link:

Then unpack it into the same folder as DOOM Eternal, which should be in your Steam folder/steamapps/common/DOOMEternal

You know you did it right if EternalModInjector.bat is in the same folder as DOOMEternalx64vk.exe

3. Restoring demon AI

Download the Challenge Restored mod by UberCringe from here:

This mod comes in two variants: Faithful and Balanced

Faithful restores demon AI to how it was before The Ancient Gods Part 2, but keeps the newly added demons unchanged. Balanced slightly tweaks the AI of the new demons as well, in an effort to make them more in line with the restored demons from base game.

It is up to personal preference which one you choose, but do not install both at the same time – it will break your game!

When you have downloaded your preferred version, copy the .zip file into the Mods folder inside your DOOM Eternal installation. Do not unpack it.

4. Restoring demon spawns

Download ‘Original TAG1’ by PowerBall253 from here:

This mod restores removed demon spawns from the three levels compromising The Ancient Gods: Part 1

When you have downloaded it, copy the .zip file into the Mods folder inside your DOOM Eternal installation just like the restored challenge one. Do not unpack it.

5. Finalizing the restoration

Now that your mods are in place, run EternalModInjector.bat and wait for it to finish working. It should automatically load you into the game, but if it doesn’t, run the game yourself through Steam.

The mods should be installed now. To test if they work, load The Ancient Gods: Part 1 and clear out the first combat encounter in UAC Atlantica. Two hell knights should spawn at its’ end after the revenants. If they spawn, that means ‘Original TAG1′ is working.

Verifying Challenge Restored is less exact, but if you load any map with arachnotron (one spawns in UAC Atlantica shortly into the level), he should fire his turret really fast with incredibly short pauses inbetween its’ laser blasts.

6. Keeping the mods up to date & Troubleshooting

When an update comes to the game, be it just a hotfix or a whole new content bundle, it is good habit to verify the integrity of game files, and then launch EternalModInjector.bat again to reinstall the mods.

The two mods may stop working in the future as updates roll out and may require updating to a newer version. Consult the mod pages after an update to be sure and report any issues you encounter to the mod authors!
