In this guide, we are going to talk about the types and elements, to help the players familiarize themselves with the game’s mechanics before or after they jump in to the games.

Digimon Types and Elemental Weaknesses

We have four types in the Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth / Hacker’s Memory. The same principle is being followed in the Complete Edition on Steam. These types are :

  • Virus
  • Data
  • Vaccine
  • Free

In a way, this is how it works : Virus > Data > Vaccine > Virus. The type Free is a neutral type, meaning, it doesn’t have any advantage over any other type or element, but it also means other elements can’t take advantage over the Free.

Virus is super effective against Data, but weak against Vaccine.
Data is super effective against Vaccine, but weak against Virus.
Vaccine is super effective against Virus, but weak against Data.

Detailed info :

If you have a type advantage, your digimon deals double damage. If your digimon has a type disadvantage, it deals half the damage.

If your digimon has an attribute advantage, it deals 1.5x more damage. Meaning if your digimon has both type and attribute advantage, it will deal a total of 3x more damage.

If your digimon has a type disadvantage and an attribute advantage, it will deal 75% or .75 of the damage instead of 50% or .50

^ Thanks to the user Wolf Steel for the detailed info.

Let’s move on to the elements now.

We have nine elements in to the games, these elements are :

  • Fire
  • Plant
  • Water
  • Electric
  • Wind
  • Earth
  • Light
  • Dark
  • Neutral

Fire is strong against Plant.
Plant is strong against Water.
Water is strong against Fire.

^First batch of elements.

Electric is strong against Wind.
Wind is strong against Earth.
Earth is strong against Electric.

^Second batch of elements.

Light and Dark are strong and weak at the same time to each other.

^Third batch of elements.

Neutral is neutral, just like Free type above, it has no advantages/disadvantages.

^No batch, in a league on its own.

You will know that you are dealing effective/non effective damage if you see your attacks are in the color of yellow-orange and a big number that means it’s 1.5x or 2.0x or 3.0x, and if your attacks aren’t effective, they will be with a grey-blue color and a small number. Percentages and numbers may differ in the actual game, but that’s the basic gist of it.

Here’s a very small list of showing some Digimon and giving an example about the icons of these said types and attributes :

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition - A Guide about types and elements
Angewomon is a Vaccine type and Light attribute/element.

Black Wargreymon is a Virus type and a Fire attribute/element.

Jesmon is a Data type and a Neutral attribute/element.

Vaccine icon looks like a drop of water.
Virus icon looks like a spiked ball.
Data icon looks like a box.
Free icon looks like a straight line.

You can see the icons of your Digimon by simply taking a look at their profiles on the bottom left below your Digimon’s feet or while in battle, your side will be displayed below in tabs so you can take a look what you have out and the enemy Digimon are going to have their icons left on their names, that + whenever you try to attack should give you a hint about how effective your damage could be against them. If it’s yellow-orange color, that means you get an advantage, but pay attention to the types and the elements.

Icons to make it even easier :

<That’s the Vaccine icon, notice that looks like a tear drop/water drop? That’s the one.

<That’s the Virus icon, looks like a spiked ball.

<And that’s the Free icon, looks like a straight line.

These are icons are the Types of the Digimon. It doesn’t matter if you see them with different colors in the game, because, every color is the element. So, red is for fire, blue is for water, white is for light, purple is for dark, brown is for earth, cyan is for wind, yellow is for electric, grey is for free, green is for plant, etc. The point is, Types are very important to determine both your damage dealing and your damage to receive, Attributes/Elements are giving a boost to that, hence why we explained above the double damage, triple damage, neutral damage effects.
