When rock and stone turns into pain and suffering (credit to Grubman)

The Beginning

I was loading up deep rock galactic when i opened up the steam overlay. Immediately, A guide caught my eye. It was simply titled “The hole”. It documented the adventure of user “Grubman” And his friend as he attempted to dig the very core of hoxxes. He didn’t make it, he ended up dying, but he managed to document some of his findings in the guide; Mainly that he came across three layers of land that were progressively harder to break. This intrigued me and my friend about what was truly down beneath the caverns that we usually stick to. We also happened to have nothing better to do. So, we decided to try and get to the bottom. For real. we decided to pick sand-blasted corridors as our biome (on a salvage mission), because of the one hit terrain. We thought it would help. We were fools.

The Surface

Deep Rock Galactic - The Hole 2: The Definition Of Insanity

We began on the surface, or the closest thing we had to a surface. At this point i should probably mention the classes me and my friend chose; I had chosen driller, so i could drill through the planet with ease, and my friend had chosen gunner, just in case any bugs wanted to threaten our vitally important science experiment. The digging began quickly, the drill made quick work of the sand and before we knew it, we were at the second layer. And that’s when we realized what we were up against

Layer 2: Bed Rock

Deep Rock Galactic - The Hole 2: The Definition Of Insanity

We Had made it to the second layer. Sweet, that was fast. we’ll be at the bottom in no time! … Oh. that’s not good. The drill’s not working anymore. I almost thought we had hit the end, but then i realized, You can still break the ground with your pickaxe. It was significantly slower, and the ground was tougher, but that didn’t stop us. We began digging deeper. Then, randomly my friend got teleported back up to the top. We have no idea why, but it happened. My friend decided to go get some Nitra and stuff, just in-case we needed it. While he was collecting minerals, i was mining. And then i broke the last bit of bedrock. And i saw the eerie darkness of the next layer that stared directly into my soul. If only i had known these black rocks and stones would claim an hour of my life.

Layer 3: Compressed Granite; Tormentor of Dwarves

Deep Rock Galactic - The Hole 2: The Definition Of Insanity

I Stood there, barley moving. It takes about 5 pickaxe hits to destroy the granite. It was agonizing. However some good news came, my friend had enough Nitra to call in a resupply pod. I called it in at the bottom of my hole. To my surprise, it actually broke the granite and came all the way down. I had expected it to stop at the beginning of the granite hole but it made it down next to me. it also made it easier for my friend to get back down. Or so i thought. He dropped down, hoping to land at the bottom. He didn’t He went down about 40 meters above me. He was down on the floor, he couldn’t do anything but hope i could save him. But, there’s no way i could do that. The granite takes too long to mine and there’s no way to get back up- “Where is that damn mule?!” My dwarf’s complaint had given me an idea. If i cant dig up to him. ill have molly take me there. I got on top of the mule, and jumped and called it. Molly climbed up the hole ever-so slightly. This was possible. It would just take a while. mining tiny holes big enough for just the beacon to call Molly forward, i slowly made my way up to my friend. until i could finally revive him. He was lucky to live to mine another day, and we made our way back down to the bottom of the hole. Another thing that began happening was our music just… stopping. It didn’t play a single track once we made it to the second layer, and it never came back. We had nothing but the ambient sounds of the cavern to listen to… Have you ever heard a saying along the lines of “When one of your senses is taken away, all your others are enhanced.”? Well, while we were still technically seeing with our eyes, all we saw was darkness. The most entertaining thing to us was the sounds the cave made, and i think we heard more than ever before. We started hearing sounds that flares made, thinking it was something moving in the walls, becoming paranoid thinking that there was something after us when in reality nothing could touch us in the hole. we kept going, looking at the same dark rock, expecting something to change. That’s when i realized we were truly going insane. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting something to change. mining the same stupid f****** rock over and over and over and over. We got sick of it. we lost hope. We also remembered we had class in the morning. After a few minutes of debate; We called off the expedition. After digging about ~250 meters from our starting depth, we ended the run at -669 meters (nice). It was finally over.

What did we learn?

Deep Rock Galactic - The Hole 2: The Definition Of Insanity

The Experiment was not without discovery. I will share some of my discoveries during this experiment below.

Swarms on Salvage Missions Are Not Random

Swarms on salvage missions are not random I don’t know what they are determined by, but throughout our hour and thirty minute journey, we did not encounter a single swarm. Hell, i didn’t even see a single bug the entire mission. Me and my friend speculate that swarms on this mission type may be influenced by progress in the objectives rather than How long you’ve been in the cave.

The Resupply Pods Do Not Spawn At The Top Of The Map

Resupply pods actually spawn a few hundred meters above the point you called them in, and not at top of the map, there is a point where if you call one in low enough; they will not cut through the entire map to get to you, And they will instead spawn in the hole above you slightly.

Deep Rock Galactic Does Not Handle Tight Spaces Well

This was a fact i knew before this but got reiterated heavily throughout our journey. The holes you dig in compressed granite are very small, barely big enough to fit in. If you try and move in one of them, your camera may start glitching out wildly and you may even get shot back up a few meters. I would not recommend digging this deep if you have Epilepsy.

Epilogue

Thank you for reading this far. If you would like to try this yourself, here are a few tips to hopefully make you more successful than me and my friend.

Get Nitra First

Pretty self explanatory

Bring some friends

Doing this alone would actually drive you insane. Bring a friend with you. Or alternatively if you have 3 people willing to help you, you could have a team on the surface gathering resources while one mines.

Choose Dreadnought Elimination or Salvage Missions

These Mission types should prevent swarms from happening while your down in the hole. It’ll keep you from being brutally slaughtered in a grave of your own making.

Don’t Spoil Yourself

One of the fun parts of digging down was wondering what could be down there, letting our imaginations run wild. My friend thought that if we dug low enough, we might run into a fully grown dreadnought. I speculated that we might run into Karl, a dwarf who was presumed dead who now lives in the deepest depth of Hoxxes, commanding a Glyphid Army. If you want to have fun digging, don’t look up what happens if you dig low enough, your imagination will probably make a better story than what really happens.

Don’t Do This When You Have Class In The Morning

We could’ve gone deeper if we had done this on a weekend.

Anyways, thank you for Reading this guide. And i wish you luck in your future endeavors.

Rock and Stone.
