This guide details the methods for acquiring and locations of all video, audio and text logs in Dead Space. All entries that aren’t in bold will be obtained automatically as you progress through the story.
 
 

Chapter 1

  • Replacing the Tram
  • Find the Data Board – After replacing the tram car in the Tram Depot, avoid entering the lift to the Maintenance Bay and go to the Tram Control Room instead. This will trigger Kendra to remind you about getting the Data Board
  • Maintenance Bay Unlocked
  • Shoot the Limbs – On the floor just before the elevator to the Maintenance Bay

  • Mercer’s Journal – On the lower floor of the Research Wing, in a corner near the bathroom sinks
  • Found the Thermite
  • Mercer and Kyne – In the power node locked supply room to Isaac’s left upon entering the Imaging Diagnostic Wing

  • Barricade Destroyed
  • We’ll Find Her – Received only if you pick up and watch Nicole’s Report (Video Log) found in the hallway that is opened up after destroying the barricade with thermite and shock pads
  • Eileen – To the left of the door to the room where an insane nurse is seen mutilating a man with a scalpel before using it on herself
  • Colonist Problems – After entering the hallway to the Morgue, this log is on the floor directly in front of Isaac

Text Logs
 
 

  • Marker Overview – Opposite the elevator you descend on in the Research Wing, there is a well lit office. In that office is a bookshelf, use telekinesis to move it out of the way, revealing the secret room. The log is found on the floor here
  • Interesting Results – To the left of the Bench in the Imaging Diagnostics Room (with the large cylinder containing a human corpse)
  • Newborns – On the floor, near the end of the long L-shaped hallway with an oxygen recharge station. Telekinesis is advisable for collecting this log as venturing to the end of this hallway will trigger a Necromorph ambush
  • More Time – On the floor, near the end of the room where you see an insane nurse mutilate a man with a scalpel before using it on herself
  • Autopsy Report – On the right side of the Morgue where you encounter the first Enhanced Slasher and Infector of the game

  • Temple Report 1 – In the middle of the Control Room next to a corpse resting in a chair. This is the first room you enter after starting Chapter 3
  • Temple Report 2 – At the end of the men’s locker room located near some ramps, a jumpscare Necromorph lying on the ground and a Bench
  • Engine Refueled
  • Temple Report 3 – After crossing the massive engine room on the gondola and killing a bunch of Necromorphs, you’ll find this log on the floor next to the ramp you walk up to turn on the second engine refueling switch
  • Temple Report 4 – Found in a locker just before entering the Decontamination Chamber for the first time
  • Centrifuge Activated
  • Temple Report 5 – On a shelf in a dark room next to the elevator on the top floor of the large multilevel room covered with The Corruption (sticky organic substance that slows your movement speed)
  • Strange Transmission

  • Chaos – To the right of a Bench you approach after killing a jumpscare Necromorph lying on the ground
  • Corruption – On the top floor of the multilevel covered with The Corruption in the room opposite the elevator. It’s found on the floor next to a locker, you can also pick up a free Power Node here

  • Report of Infection – As soon as you enter the large open room with two Enhanced Slashers and large swathes of exposed gravity plating, turn to Isaac’s right. You’ll see a door on the same wall you’re next to. Enter this room and pick up the log in front of the locker
  • List of Dead – On the Captain’s chair in the Captain’s Nest where you reunite with Hammond

 
 
*It is impossible to get all three of these audio logs as the Aim the ADS Cannon audio log will play upon rerouting power from the last system. A second playthrough is required to unlock all three. Make sure you don’t activate the system tied to your missing log last otherwise Aim the ADS Cannon audio log will again play instead of the audio log you need to unlock

  • Cross Report 3 – On Level 2 of the East Grow Chamber, on the floor in front of a locked door
  • Temple’s Search – After shooting off The Tentacle that grabs Isaac and entering the door at the end of that hallway, you’ll find this log on the floor
  • Getting to the Leviathan
  • A Message
  • Cross Report 4 – After finally purifying the air and unlocking the door to Food Storage, this log will be in the middle of the hallway (the one before the room where you use the poison on The Leviathan but fail to kill it fully)
  • Pods Destroyed

  • Attach the Beacon – Destroy all gravity tethers, DON’T plant the beacon and finally try to launch the asteroid then Kendra will call you giving you this audio log

Summary

In total, there are 168 logs in the game. However, just 53 of these are missable. Most are audio logs, followed by video logs then text logs which are the rarest. 6 logs are unlocked upon completing the game (the Backstory Logs, filed under Chapter 12).
 
 
It’s also important to note that it’s impossible to unlock every log in a single playthrough because of a quirk in Chapter 4. As previously explained, the audio log corresponding to whichever ship system’s power you reroute last will be lost for that playthrough so Hammond can give you the “Aim the ADS Cannon” audio log in which he tells Isaac that the ADS is ready for use.
